The Washington Township
Council and Mayor Matthew
Lyons invite all residents to come
out on July 3 and celebrate Inde-
pendence Day at the Washington
Lake Park Amphitheater. The am-
phitheater is located at 626 Hurf-
fville-Crosskeys Rd. in Sewell and
celebrations will begin at 7 p.m.
This year we are going to have
a concert and fireworks, Lisa
Collins, Washington Township
Community Events coordinator,
said.
The celebration will start off
with a presentation of colors by
the Washington Township High
School JROTC and the Star Span-
gled Banner sung by local singer
Payton Taylor.
The South Philadelphia String
Band will kick off the event, per-
forming a one-hour set. After a 10-
minute interlude, The Quailes
will take the stage for a one-hour
performance around 8 p.m.
The Quailes are a local band,
Collins said. They will play a pa-
triotic tribute to honor the veter-
ans.
Fireworks will begin around
9:15 p.m. and will be accompanied
by prerecorded music.
The fireworks will come right
over the amphitheater, but they
will be able to be seen from other
parts of the park as well, Collins
said.
The Independence Day celebra-
tion will also offer attendees
many different vendors. There
will be an ice cream and water ice
stand, funnel cake, hot dogs, ham-
burgers, barbecue food, frozen
non-alcoholic drinks and many
others.
The Washington Township Pa-
rade Scholarship Committee will
be selling patriotic novelty items
and water bottles. The proceeds
will go toward scholarships for
next years graduating class.
The committee was proud to
announce that they awarded
eight $500 scholarships to 2011
graduates, Collins said.

for Miss
U.S. title
Miss New Jersey United States heads
to Sin City for annual competition

Washington Township resident
Kara Rex will travel to Las Vegas
July 7 through 15 to compete in
the Miss United States Pageant.
Rex has been competing in pag-
eants since 2004 and won Miss
New Jersey United States on May
15.
I was doing a lot of volunteer
work, and pageants just went
hand-in-hand with that, Rex
said. There were also opportuni-
ties for scholarships.
Rex will be competing on her
platform of advocating for chil-
dren, adolescents and teens. As
an educator, Rex feels this is a
very important platform.
Im an educator, Rex said. I
want to make a positive differ-
ence for youth. My goal is to
touch the minds, hearts, and
souls of children, adolescents,
and teens everywhere.
Rex earned two bachelors de-
grees from Rowan University in
the fall of 2009 in English and ed-
ucation.
She also holds three education
certificates in elementary teach-
ing, middle school language arts
and reading education.
For the pageant, Rex will have
to compete in three categories:
on-stage evening gown, on-stage
swimsuit and on-stage interview.
This is a bigger pageant, Rex
said. I had to work hard, be phys-
ically fit and eat right. It is very
demanding, and I am very moti-
vated.
In addition to the three cate-
gories, contestants also compete
for two side awards. The first one
is called Supermodel with Style
Fashion Event and is sponsored
by Supermodels Unlimited Maga-
zine. The theme is Denim and Di-
amonds, which means the con-
testants dress in jeans, a white
tank top and lots of diamonds
and glitz.
The second side award is the
No Phone Zone, which is spon-
sored by O, The Oprah Magazine.
This award deals with the cam-
paign of no texting and driving.
In addition, the top eight contest-
ants who place in the three main
categories have to answer on-
stage questions.
All of us are automatically en-
tered, Rex said. They have no
bearing on the main categories,
they are just fun events.
The first day of the competi-
tion is the kickoff and is when the
contestants get to know each
other.
The first night is the Bowling
Shoes and Ball Gowns Event,
where we go bowling in a ball
gown, Rex said. Its going to be
a lot of fun getting to know all the
girls.

Raymond F. Anderson III, a
teacher of German and French at
Washington Township High
School since 2002, has been elevat-
ed unanimously by the Washing-
ton Township Board of Educa-
tion to the position of District
World Languages supervisor, ef-
fective July 1. Anderson replaces
Cathy Moncrief, who served in
the supervisory role for 10 years
and is retiring from the district
after 40 years of service. The
Washington Township Public
Schools currently offer foreign
language instruction (Spanish,
French, German and Chinese) by
certified world language teachers
from fifth through 12th grades.
Third and fourth-graders receive
Spanish instruction from the
classroom teachers.
In his new capacity, Anderson
will oversee and evaluate 30
World Language teachers, devel-
op curriculum, assess student
achievement and develop strate-
gies to improve instruction and
programming. He will also work
closely with English as a Second
Language teachers to ensure that
this student population of non-
English speakers receives the
supports to encourage their
growth and success.
I am very pleased with the ap-
pointment of Ray Anderson to
this important role, Superin-
tendent of Schools Dr. Cheryl Si-
mone said. I feel he has the for-
eign language background and
supervisory experience neces-
sary to move the World Lan-
guages program forward as we
continue to prepare our students
to excel in a global society.
Anderson, a German and
French teacher at Washington
Township High School since 2002,
has taught beginning and inter-
mediate French classes and all
levels of German, including Ad-
vanced Placement German, and
was instrumental in the design of
the German curriculum. Addi-
tionally, Anderson serves as the
advisor for the schools National
Honor Society, German Club, Ger-
man National Honor Society and
is the Business Manager for the
schools annual plays and musi-
cals. As coordinator of the Na-
tional Honor Society, he also col-
laborates with the districts ele-
mentary Talented and Gifted
teachers.
Anderson has chaperoned a di-
verse number of school functions
including dances and proms, the
senior trip and graduation and
has served as a member of the
districts Anti-Bullying Commit-
tee, the Ad Hoc Committee for
midterm examination implemen-
tation, the Professional Develop-
ment Committee, the Handbook
Revision Committee, the Ad Hoc
Committee on grading proce-
dures, class rank and weighting,
and the Novice Teacher Mentor-
ing Plan Committee.
Anderson holds a bachelor of
arts degree in German, a bache-
lor of arts degree in French and a
bachelor of science degree in
management from St. Josephs
University. He earned a masters
of science in educational leader-
ship and administration from St.
Josephs University in 2005. In
addition to his teaching certifi-
cates, he holds a standard certifi-
cate as a supervisor and a princi-
pals certification. He has served
since 1998 as the principal and co-
ordinator of Curriculum and In-
struction for the Immanuel Ger-
man Language School in
Philadelphia.

The Washington Township
High School Minutemen March-
ing Band will host its annual
summer carnival July 11 to 16, in
the Washington Township High
School parking lot. Games, rides,
food and fun await visitors, and a
$20 donation on family nights,
Tuesday, July 12, Wednesday, July
13 and Thursday, July 14, will pay
for the purchase of a wrist band
for unlimited rides.
All proceeds from the carnival
will be used to offset the cost of
the bands trip to its competition
in college footballs Bowl Champi-
onship Series Championship
Game Band Competition and
Halftime Show in New Orleans,
La., January 6-10, 2012.
The band will perform in both
the pre-game and halftime show
for the BCS National Champi-
onship game. They also will take
part in a band field show competi-
tion and have some time to enjoy

A residence on White Birch
Road was a topic of conversation
at the recent council meeting.
Two residents said that the
property was an eyesore. They
said the property is in shambles
and has three cars parked on the
property, with one on the street
that is not registered.
Another resident said that
trash had been left all over the
front yard of the residence and
had caused rats to come over into
her yard, which is next door. The
rats have caused 12 to 15 holes in
her yard and eaten through her
fence.
Her kids cannot play in their
playhouse, and her dog had eaten
poison pellets exterminators laid
and needed to be rushed to the
veterinarian.
We have a problem with the
tenant not letting us in the prop-
erty, township solicitor Timothy
Chell said. There are multiple
violations at the property, and we
will be taking them to court.
One resident said that the prop-
erty was an absolute disgrace and
that she was glad the township
was taking care of it.
The council also passed a reso-
lution awarding a contract to
Waste Management in the
amount of $12.5 million over a
five-year period. The contract will
save the township $1 million over
the five-year span, officials said.
Residents target problem property
According to a press release,
Camden County Prosecutor War-
ren W. Faulk reported indict-
ments returned against two men
charged in connection with the
death of a Gloucester Township
police K-9.
Skyler Robinson, 21, and Evan
Scotese, 20, both of Sewell, were
indicted on three counts of Rob-
bery, a count of Conspiracy to
Commit Robbery and Aggravated
Assault. Robinson was also in-
dicted for Resisting Arrest and
two counts of Injury to Law En-
forcement Animals.
The two men are accused of
robbing the Lucky Dragon restau-
rant on the 400 block of East
Church Street about 7 p.m. on
Nov. 30, 2010. During the course of
the robbery, Scotese is alleged to
have punched a man working at
the restaurant in the face. The
two men fled with cash.
Responding Gloucester Town-
ship police officers included Cor-
poral Mark Pickard and his K-9
partner Schultz. The officer and
his K-9 pursued Robinson toward
Route 42 and Pickard released
Schultz after ordering Robinson
to stop and warning him he had a
K-9 with him. Schultz caught
Robinson and the two struggled.
It is alleged Robinson punched
Schultz in the head, forcing the K-
9 to release his grip. When
Schultz caught Robinson again,
Robinson began swinging Schultz
into the path of oncoming traffic
in an effort to make the K-9 re-
lease his arm. In the process
Robinson spun into oncoming
traffic and both the defendant and
Schultz were hit by a passing car.
Robinson ran away but Schultz
was hit by at least three more ve-
hicles and was found lying in a
grass median. He died at the
scene.
Robinson was arrested in a
nearby home after a resident re-
ported him banging on his front
door. Scotese was arrested at his
home the next day.
All persons charged with crim-
inal offenses are presumed inno-
cent until found guilty beyond a
reasonable doubt.

Red license plate stickers need to go
T
he folks who brought us Kyleighs Law five years ago
meant well. They wanted to protect young drivers. And
most of the law does just that by mandating curfews and
limiting driving privileges.
But theres one huge problem
with the law: the requirement
that teens place red decals on
the license plates of the cars
they are driving.
The intent is to let folks know
that the person behind the
wheel is a young, inexperienced
driver.
The problem with the law is that it lets folks know that the
person behind the wheel is a young, inexperienced driver.
If youve driven in New Jersey for more than 10 minutes, you
have encountered your share of idiots. Often, said idiots are en-
raged at something or someone, real or imaginary. And they
usually are in a hurry to get somewhere probably to hang out
with other idiots.
They honk horns, yell, use creative sign language, cut people
off, swerve in and out of traffic, speed and otherwise get some
kind of perverse joy in showing the world that they indeed are
the north end of a southbound mule.
Its not a huge jump to believe that these slack-jawed knuckle-
draggers will get quite the hoot in going after an easy target
like those drivers with red decals on license plates.
And those are just the normal idiots. To pedophiles and the
traditional criminal element, these red stickers are giant red
flags that say Hey, the person driving this car probably is a re-
ally easy target.
Lose the sticker requirement. Or, instead, put red license
plate stickers on a bunch of unmarked police cars. Have the
biggest, most ill-tempered cops you can find drive these cars.
Eventually, one way or another, word will get around that you
should give extra space and courtesy to those red-tag drivers.

Washington Township School
District maintenance worker
Mike Tamaska recently brought
the vision of Washington Town-
ship High School Principal Joe
Bollendorf to life by building an
attractive area that will welcome
visitors to Tom Brown Stadium.
The circular hardscaping proj-
ect built around an already exist-
ing flagpole required three weeks
of Tamaskas time and was fund-
ed through monies generated by
the schools annual PowderPuff
Football game and gifted by the
junior and senior class councils.
Tamaska laid 1,500 pavers and
built an 18-foot circular wall out
of 500 blocks that stands two-feet
high.
He also included a round pad
that will showcase the schools
cannon during major events and
home football games.
The area was also outfitted
with flowers for the schools June
20th graduation ceremony.

Im excited. It is a lot of fun to
have a big team behind me, Rex
said. Im not really nervous at

she will spend the year traveling

work and public events.
