Introduction

Interpersonal communication is the process of exchange of information,


ideas and feelings between two or more people through verbal or non-
verbal methods. It often includes face-to-face exchange of information, in a
form of voice, facial expressions, body language and gestures. The level of

one’s interpersonal communication skills is measured through the


effectiveness of transferring messages to others. Commonly used
interpersonal communication within an organization include daily internal
employee communication, client meetings, employee performance reviews
and project discussions. In addition, online conversations today make a
large portion of employee’s interpersonal communication in the workplace.

Listening has many positive benefits for business but is the least developed
verbal communication skill. Empathy is important to understand another
person’s feelings, which may differ from your own. Whether listening to a
formal presentation or conversing with one or two people, you can learn to
listen more effectively by giving the speaker your individual attention,
staying open-minded about the speaker and the topic, avoiding
interrupting the speaker and the topic, avoiding interrupting the speaker,
and involving yourself actively in the communication.

Rationale

With self-reflection questions throughout the book, the students will be able to apply
the basic principles of effective communication to develop verbal communication
skill and on how to interpret nonverbal behavior.

Intended Learning Outcomes

A. Explain the meaning and importance of nonverbal messages.


B. Listen and show empathy in business situations.
C. Use social media to build business relationships.
D. Use voice technologies and texting effectively in business situations.
A. Plan, facilitate, and participate in business meetings.
