TOPIC
Music of the Southeast Asia

Expectation

In this module, the learners are expected to learn concepts about


creating and improvising simple accompaniments to selected Southeast Asian
Music using recycled materials. They will sing selected folk songs from Southeast
Asia. Also, they will perform music with appropriate accompaniment. Lastly,
appreciate the artistic creativity through performance using localized/improvised
musical instruments.

Brief Introduction

Hello! You are done studying about Southeast Asian countries like
Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar, you have knowledge about
their brief historical background, elements of their traditional music, their vocal
and instrumental music. You also watched, listened and followed how to sing
examples of their traditional songs. You have already improvised
accompaniment and music of the Southeast Asian countries. Now you are
ready for more performances but this time you shall evaluate your performance
using the given rubric.

Activity 1
Musical Instrument Improvisation
After experiencing the music of Southeast Asia, let us experience how to create
improvised instruments. You need to prepare recycled materials for your improvised
instrument.

1. Glue the two pails together (make the opening sides face outwards).
2. Wrap the plastic cover on top part of the pail using rubber band.
3. Use piece of sticks to create a string-like design on the pail. Use glue to paste the
sticks. (Warning: Be careful on using glue gun)
4. Polish your work.
5. Voila! You have your Do-it –yourself Kendang.

1. Get two round thin pieces of metal.


2. Draw a small circle at the center of the round thin piece of metal.
3. Make a small hole in the middle of the round thin piece of metal using sharp
tools.eg nail, driller, etc.
4. Cut a rope and insert it to the hole of the metal.
5. There it is! You have your do-it- yourself Chhing

Activity 2: Let’s Perform!
Create an accompaniment of Burung Kaka Tua and Loi Loi Kratong using the
following option below:
• Musical instruments/Improvised musical instruments
• Available materials you can found at your home.
• Musical application for mobile phone or other gadgets.
You will record the video/audio of your performance and send it through email,
messenger, or other flat form.

Note:
If the example of music is unavailable the teacher may use Filipino Folk Songs
which is very familiar to the students and apply the musical elements of
specific Southeast Asian country.

Watch the video and listen to the traditional folk song of “Si Patokaan” from
Indonesia and try to follow the song.

Si Patokaan is a song that has a pattern of narrative poem. It is an expression of


the love and a concern of a mother to her child who had grown up and had been
obliged to earn their own living, usually boy. The migration tradition closely related to the

Remember
The music of Southeast Asia has different styles and each country has an important

part of their people’s live because they use it for entertainment, ceremonies, rituals and

courting. Most of the instruments are percussive with exception of some aerophones

and chordophones. Each country’s musical instruments and even some songs are

somewhat similar to each other due to their history of trading and migration.

In terms of Vocal music, each country has a difference style in singing. Indonesian vocal

music is used to ornament the Gamelan, Thai Vocal music is very important to the

people because they are a mean of expression and a form of entertainment, and other

countries are used for ceremonies, rituals, workplace, and entertainment.

Performing one of the songs is a good way of appreciating their culture and unique style
of music.
