Title: Reading and Recognizing Decimal Numbers

Objective: The students must be able to read and recognize decimal numbers.
Concept: The decimal point separates the units column from the tenths column. To the right of the
decimal point, we read the names of the digits individually.

Illustrative Example/s:

1. Write 13. 578 in words.

Solution:
Step 1: Write the whole number part (the section in front of the decimal) if there is one. 13. 578 as is.
(Thirteen)
Step 2: Write the decimal point as “and”. (Thirteen and)
Step 3: Write the number to the right of the decimal point as you would a whole number. 13. 578.
Thirteen and (five hundred seventy-eight).
Step 4: Write the place value of the last digit. 13.578
The 8 is in the thousandths place so your answer is

Title: Ordering and Comparing Decimal Numbers

Objective: The students must be able to compare and arranged decimal numbers in order.
Concept: To compare decimals, compare digits in the same place value beginning at the left. The
number with a greater digit in the same place is the greater number.
If one number has more decimal places than another, add zeros to the one with fewer decimal
places to compare, if desired. Same concept can be used in arranging decimals in ascending or
descending order.

Illustrative Example/s :

1. Compare .74 and .82

Solution:
As with whole numbers, compare digits in the same place value.
.7 4 Since 7 in the tenths place of .74 is less than 8 in the same
.8 2 place, therefore .74 < .82

2. Arrange the following decimals in descending order.

8.14, 5.96, 0.863, 6.4, 3.81 and 0.5
Solution:
By converting each of the decimal number to like decimals we get
8.140, 5.960, 0.863, 6.400, 3.810, and 0.500
Therefore, 8.140>6.400 > 5.960> 3.810> 0.863> 0.500
Hence, the given decimals in descending order are
8.14, 6.4, 5.96, 3.81, 0.863, 0.5

Exercises:
Direction: Read each question carefully and choose the letter of the correct answer.
1. Which is greater, 0.2 or 0.20?
a. 0.2 b. 20 c. has equal value d. no answer
2. Which of the two decimals has a smaller value, 1.37 or 1.2589?
a. 1.37 b. both c. 1.2589 d. no answer
3. Which of the following decimals are of equal values?
a. 4.09 b. 4.90 c. 4.009 d. 4.090
4. Arrange the following decimals in decreasing order of values.
4.7 40.7 4.07 4.007 0.47

a. 4.7, 40.7, 4.07, 0.47, 4.007 b. 4.7,40.7, 4.07, 4.007, 0.47

c. 40.7, 4.7, 4.07, 4.007, 0.47 d. 4.07, 40.7, 4.7, 4.007, 0.47

1. Compare 3.78 and 3.612

Solution:
Write the numbers one beneath the other, aligning the decimal points.
3.78
3.612
Then compare the whole-number parts. Both are the same, so proceed to the next digit.
Compare the tenths: 7 tenths is larger than 6 tenths. So the final answer is
3.78 is larger than 3.612.

Title: Performing Operations on Decimal Numbers

Objective: The students must be able to perform operations on decimal numbers.
Concept:Decimal points must always be aligned before adding and/or subtracting decimals. Zeros
are helpful place value holders in adding and subtracting decimals as long as they are used as end
zeros.
In multiplying decimals, multiply just like whole numbers. The product, however, must have the
same number of decimal places with the total number of decimal places in the factors combined.
Before dividing a number by a decimal, make the divisor a whole number first by moving the
decimal point to the right of its rightmost digit. The same number of movements must also be done
with the dividend. Annex zeros if necessary.

Illustrative Example/s:

Find the sum of the following decimals.

5.49 14.068 0.013 3.7 0.142

Title: Ordering and Comparing Decimal Numbers

Objective: The students must be able to compare and arranged decimal numbers in order.
Concept: To compare decimals, compare digits in the same place value beginning at the left. The
number with a greater digit in the same place is the greater number.
If one number has more decimal places than another, add zeros to the one with fewer decimal
places to compare, if desired. Same concept can be used in arranging decimals in ascending or
descending order.
Illustrative Example/s:

2. Arrange the following decimals in descending order.

8.14, 5.96, 0.863, 6.4, 3.81 and 0.5
Solution:
By converting each of the decimal number to like decimals we get
8.140, 5.960, 0.863, 6.400, 3.810, and 0.500
Therefore, 8.140>6.400 > 5.960> 3.810> 0.863> 0.500
Hence, the given decimals in descending order are
8.14, 6.4, 5.96, 3.81, 0.863, 0.5
