SCIENCE IV

QUARTER 3 WEEK 3

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

• A magnet is a material that produces magnetic field.

• Magnets have invisible magnetic field which attracts objects made
of iron and nickel.
• One end of a bar magnet is the north pole and the opposite is the
south pole.
• Magnets are attracted to three types of metals. These metals are
made of nickel, iron, and cobalt.
• There are several types of magnets like ring magnets, rectangular
magnets, and bar magnets.
• When the same poles of two magnets, whether North or South, are
placed close to each other, they repel or push each other.
• When the opposite poles are placed closed to each other, they
attract or pull each other.
• Magnets are important in our daily life. They play an important
role in a wide range of devices. MRI machines which
doctors use to look inside people's bodies use magnet to create a
clear, detailed picture of bones, organ and tissues.
• Magnets range in size from a speck to industrial monsters
weighing tons.
• Most homes contain many magnets. Refrigerator magnets hold
papers, bottle openers and other small items to the metal
refrigerator door.
• A pocket compass uses a magnetic needle to show which way is
north.
• The dark magnetic strip on the backside of a credit card stores
data in much the same way as a computer’s hard drive does.
• Vacuum cleaners, blenders and washing machines all have
electric motors that work by magnetic principles. You will find
magnets in phones, doorbells, shower curtains, weights and
children's toys.

Let’s Analyze
A. Analyze the pictures carefully. Encircle all the magnetic objects.

B. Attract or Repel
Explore and observe the following materials by using a magnet/ref
magnet. Will the magnet attract or repel the objects? Check the
appropriate column.

Materials Attract Repel

(pull) (push)
horseshoe √
rubber eraser
1 peso coin
metal spoon
plastic ruler
needle
handkerchief

1. What happened when the materials were placed near the

magnet?_______________________________________________
2. What are the objects attracted by the magnet? ________________
What are they made of? ________________
3. What are the objects that were not attracted by the magnet? ______
What are they made of?___________________________________

C. Look at the illustration. Which pair of magnets will attract each other
and which pair will repel each other. Encircle the correct answer.
S N N S
1. Attract Repel

2. Attract Repel S N S N

3. Attract Repel N S N S

4. Attract Repel N S S N

Let’s Try (Evaluation)

A. Read the questions carefully. Choose the letter of the correct answer.
Write the answer on your answer sheet and submit it to your teacher.

each other?
A. gravity C. friction
B. magnetism D. poles
2. What will happen when the same poles of two magnets are placed
close to each other?
A. push each other C. attract each other
B. pull each other D. protect each other
3. Given the following objects, which of these will be attracted to a
magnet?
I. iron wire II. paper III. paper clip IV. silver
jewelry
A. I, II, and III C. I, II, and IV
B. II, III, and IV D. I, III and IV
4. Which of the following terms refers to as the end of a magnet?
A. holes B. moles C. poles D. roles
5. There are several types of magnet. What type of magnet is shown in
the picture?
A. ring magnet
B. bar magnet
C. horseshoe magnet
D. rectangular magnet

B. True or False. Write TRUE if the sentence is correct and FALSE if

not.

_____1. Magnets have 2 South poles.

_____2. If you break a magnet in half it will be demagnetized.
_____3. Magnet is important in our daily life.
_____4. Magnets in MRI machine help doctors to treat people with
health issues.
_____5. A compass needle always points north on the Earth.
