Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

How does electricity flow to your appliances? Two conditions must be met in
order for electricity to flow: first, there must be a source of electricity; second, there
must be a complete path for the electricity to flow through.

An electrical circuit has four parts: a source, light bulb, wires and
switch.
In setup A, a wire is attached to the
negative end of the battery, while the other
wire is attached to the positive end. Both wires
are attached to the bulb. Such a circuit is called
a closed circuit. A closed circuit makes the bulb
light up because the path of electricity is
complete. Allowing electricity to flow through it.

In setup B, electricity does not flow in


this kind of circuit because there is a gap or no
complete path from one end of the circuit to the
other end. So, what makes a circuit open? The
switches that you see around our homes are
electrical components that can make the
circuits of the lights in our homes open or
closed.

PARTS OF A SIMPLE ELECTRIC CIRCUIT
Dry cell/Source – is the source of electricity or charges moving through the wire.
Bulb- a nipple is connected to the bulb which becomes lighted.
Switch and Fuse – controls the flow of charges. When it is “on” the path becomes
complete and we have a closed circuit. When the switch is “off” there is a break in
the path and this opens the circuit.
Wire – The charges that move around the circuit.

Activity: Constructing a Model of an Electric Circuit

You Need:
1 flashlight dry cell (1.5 V) electric wire
light bulb electrical tape
switch a piece of flat wooden board dry
Procedure: Under strict supervision of the parents/guardian.
Do these:
1. Arrange a circuit to light a bulb. Use 2 wires.
2. Draw a diagram of the circuit you have just
constructed in a box A. Labe your diagram
3. Use the electrical tape to secure the dry cell on
the other end of the board.
4. Now use only one wire to light the bulb.
5. Switch on and off and observe.
