Energy Drinks Advantages and Disadvantages

Energy beverages are products widely promoted to enhance physical performance, mental

alertness and increase energy. Energy drinks are the second most widely used dietary

supplements from multivitamins. Sporting people who believe caffeine provides an advantage

when exercising or a fatigued individual, a beverage that gives quick energy will be appealing to

them. Even though policy statements on energy beverages advertising sites warn against

consumption of such drinks by children, its consumption is mostly by youths. Students and

athlete are the victims of excessive energy drinks consumption when trying to study or when

awaiting a big game. Despite have positive effects such as improved athletic ability and

provisional enhanced alertness during controlled trials, there are numerous negative health

effects as a result of its consumption. There are two major types of energy beverage products,

those sold in normal containers as those of soft drinks and the energy shorts having high

concentrated liquids normally in small containers.

Advantages

Energy drinks comprises of caffeine as the major ingredient with concentration of 70-240

mg in drinks in 16-oz container (De Sanctis, 224). For energy shorts, the concentration is

between 113 and 200 mg (De Sanctis, 224). Other ingredients include sugar, vitamin B, vohimbe,

bitter orange ginseng and glucuronolactone. Energy drinks have bot advantages and

disadvantages. Energy beverages boosts productivity, alertness and wakefulness as its two major

ingredients are caffeine and sugar. A combination of the two gives a human body and mind to be

energized and alert thus can combat a long days tasks. Unlike in tea and coffee where caffeine

levels are unstandardized, caffeine amounts in energy drinks are standardized. Indicated amounts

of caffeine in energy drinks enable consumers to regulate their caffeine intake. Since energy

beverages are served cold contrasting coffee or tea which are served hot enables quick

consumption thus caffeine is quickly up taken into the bloodstream. It additionally helps in

changing ones attitudes and mood thus improving ones creativity.

Energy drinks exists in a number of flavors. Every consumer has their own preference of

flavors the want to consume, energy drinks assures that. Individuals who don’t like tea or coffee

and like consuming caffeine can opt for energy beverage of their own flavor choice. In addition

to caffeine, energy drinks contain other nutritious ingredients such as ginseng, vitamin B,

glucuronolactone and taurine which helps human mind and body positively. Energy are almost

available everywhere making them easily accessible to every interested consumer. They are also

cheap with price ranges of between 1 and 5$ (Ehlers A). Energy drinks are ready to consume

beverages thus they can be taken anywhere. Since the beverages are carbonated, the give a

refreshing effect during consumption. During exercises that require lots of energy, the drinks

come in handy as the help athletes recover easily and exercise faster. Energy drinks are calorie

free making them a healthier option compared to caffeine containing drinks such as white tea and

coffee.

Disadvantages

However, energy drinks have many disadvantages to consumers. Consumers with high

caffeine uptake resulting from energy drinks consumption in most cases develop cardiovascular

complications. High energy drinks intake can lead to mild heart attacks which can lead to death.

Sugar levels that are high of between 25-39 g contained in energy drinks can lead to obesity,

diabetes, sleeping disorders and dental problems (Reissig, 5). As the beverages are good for gym,

their consumption can lead to weight gains. Energy dinks are extremely addictive because of

caffeine and sugar mostly in teen and children. Some energy beverages are very addictive

leading to children developing early substance habit traits. Most energy drinks are not regulated.

The Drug and Food Administration (FDA) only limits caffeine levels at 70 mg for every 12

ounces of a drink but doesn’t regulate energy beverages (De Sanctis, 224).

Over time, there has been an enormous increase in energy drink sales in the US and

globally. The marketing strategies are aimed at the teens who are the biggest clients. Exposure to

energy drinks happens as youths encounter adverts in shopping malls, computer games and

children websites. These puts children at risk as they are very likely to purchase the products thus

developing health problems. Most energy drinks are mixed with alcohol which makes consumers

makes them feel less mentally and physically impaired (Nordt, 978). After consumption,

individuals feel intoxicated resulting from the alcohol. This can lead to impaired judgment. It can

also lead to early alcohol consumption by teens since they want to experience more of what they

feel when the take energy drinks. Energy drinks adverse effects and risks can be avoided through

avoiding energy drinks or sticking to the recommended amounts. The limits are mostly labeled

on the drinks containers. Additional ingredients that make up the drinks are added in small

amounts thus lacking health benefits.

To some extent, energy beverages deliver the promised benefits through assisting an

individual function normally when sleep-deprived or tired as well as increased brain function.

They help athletes quickly re-energize during exercise or competitions and improves alertness

for learners. However, when consuming it, one should the ingredients that make up the drink.

Energy drinks have high caffeine amounts which can lead to addiction, sugar which can lead to

diabetes or cardiovascular problems and alcohol which affects children. Having considered the

health concerns resulting from consumption of energy drinks, water is highly recommended as

an option. Water is substance free including alcohol and caffeine as well as calorie free making it

very healthy for consumption. If it is really necessary for an individual to consume energy

drinks, the intake levels should be as low as possible.
