Egypt Grand Challenges

•Deal With Urban Congestion

•Recycled Garbage And Wastes For
Economic And Environmental
Purposes
• Reduce The Effect Of Climate
Change.
Design Challenge
• Your team will design and construct a new underground pedestrian
tunnel to ensure safe transfer of passengers and solve the problem of
urban congestion in Egypt.
• Research underground tunnel structures (rectangular, square,
circular, oval … etc.).
• Use paper or other materials to try out a couple different designs
before selecting, building, and testing your prototype.
Design Challenge
• The primary materials must be from recycled materials (avoid using
any fabricated ones).
• The tunnel materials should be recycled from available waste and/or
byproducts.
• Students MUST use composites of basic recycled material as
polymers reinforced by bars recycled materials such as metals,
organic materials, fibers …. etc.
Design Challenge
• Use your research to select which tunnel structural design to
recommend and share the reasons for the recommendation,
considering load and materials. Be prepared to show underground
pedestrian tunnel designs.
• Document all of your work in your capstone portfolio including your
research, recommendations, tunnel design, tunnel load tests, … (see
Capstone Portfolio Template.)
Design Requirements:
●The real length of the new tunnel must be not less than 14 m (apart at a
scale of 1/25) .(56 cm length min.)
●The real clear height of the tunnel must be not less than 3.0 m (apart at a
scale of 1/25) .(12 cm length min.)
●The real clear internal net cross section of the tunnel must be not less than
18 m2 .
●The maximum real thickness of any of the tunnel sides should not exceed
0.75 m (apart at a scale of 1/25) .(3 cm length max.)
●Your prototype tunnel must carry a simulated “traffic and soil load”
consisting of a 15-kilogram mass placed on the top of the structure at mid-
span. The corresponding deflection at the same point load application should
not exceed 0.01 m.
●Select (you are not required to build) a proper plumbing system to drain
water.
constraints
● The tunnel materials should be recycled from available waste and/or
byproducts (avoid using any fabricated ones).
● Students MUST use a composite of recycled polymers as basic
material along with reinforcing bars recycled of materials such as
metals, organic materials, fibers …. etc.
● The basic used recycled polymer material should be converted to a
grinded form.
● The maximum diameter of the reinforcing bars should not exceed 3
mm while the maximum length should not exceed 50 mm.
constraints
● Students are allowed to use any adhesive materials (except epoxy)
to bend the basic grinded material together as well as the
reinforcing bars to it. The weight of the adhesive material is limited
to maximum 20% of the weight of the used recycled base material.
● You must follow ALL School Safety rules and documents in your
Capstone Portfolio. Failure to do so will result in a reduced grade.
● No equipment or materials that belong to the laboratories can be
removed from the laboratories at any time. You must conduct those
tests that require this equipment in the labs. Failure to do so will
result in a reduced grade.
