STIFFNESS METHOD FOR TRUSSES

PREPARED BY: ENGR. VILLAMOR D. ABAD JR.

Degree of Freedom
- Is defined as displacement component.
- The number of degrees of freedom of a system
is the number of displacement components or
coordinates needed to define its position in
space at any given time under any loading
Definition of terms
Node points
- The physical joint of a structure since these are
the points of connection of the elements of the
analytical model.
Member or element
- Physical component of a structure
Global Coordinate
- Is established for the complete structure
Local axes
- Are fixed to the respective elements and these
axes may differ from element to element.

PROBLEM 1
A statically determinate truss is subjected to the load and
resulting bar forces shown. What is the displacement of a? E =
200 GPa.
PROBLEM 2
A statically determinate truss is subjected to the load and
resulting bar forces shown. What are the bar forces and the
displacement of a? E = 200000 MPa
PROBLEM 3
Determine the joint displacements, member axial forces and
support reactions of the truss shown.
