High, Villa Luna, Cauayan City Isabela. This is Geraldine Sagario, your teacher in English 7.

sent you…. your pen or marker, and a paper. don’t forget also to jot down important points of
our lesson for today… if you are ready, let’s begin.

PURPOSES.
Let me just give credit to the author of this module ma’am Ma. Cristina S. Alarcio.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Oral communication in the 21st century includes verbal and non-verbal communication. An
effective oral communicator can speak with clarity and precision in formal and informal
contexts. Effective communicators exhibit four core sub-competencies; they use stories to
communicate ideas; they are aware of their audience and use the appropriate tone and word
choice. They are also active listeners who can "hear" both what is said and what is not said and
can use body language.

Throughout the lesson, you will be able to:

a. Distinguish types of communication;

b. Identify appropriate oral languages used, stance and behavior when giving information,
instructions, making explanations, and narrating events in factual and personal recounts; and,
c. Use the appropriate oral language, stance, and behavior when giving information, instructions,
making explanations, and narrating events in factual and personal recounts.

(It seems that you also have a prior knowledge regarding our lesson… so let’s now jump to
lesson 1 entitled…)
Lesson 1 ORAL LANGUAGE, STANCE, and BEHAVIOR

Oral language is one of the most important skills that students can master-both for social and academic
success. Learners use this skill throughout the day to process and deliver information, instructions, make
explanations, narrate events, and even interact with peers.

(So aside from reading and writing skills, oral language or communication skill is another skill that you,
students must develop… Why? Is it really important to enhance our communication skill? Yes, or no?
Well…The answer is YES. It is because we often use this skill in our day to day lives. We use this skill when
we are communicating to our family, friends, peers…and even to you classmates and teachers. We use
this ORAL LANGUAGE/COMMUNICATION SKILL to deliver information… when you want to share your
ideas with your classmates or with your friends….we are using this oral language skill. This is why it
should be developed just like the others skills that we have tackled in our past lessons.)

Aside from speech, there are also other ways of expressing what we want or feel. Our facial expressions
and body movements can convey our thoughts or feelings. Thus, both the speaker and listener must
possess qualities or characteristics to deliver and receive the message with clarity, accuracy, and
conciseness.

There are four types of communication:

1. Verbal communication utilizes the spoken word, either face-to-face or remotely. It is essential to
most interactions.
(Ok. So the first one is verbal communication. Again when we say verbal communication, we use
spoken words when we interact to people. Nagsasalita tayo at naririnig din nung receiver ng
information yung sinasabi natin. And the response that we will receive from our listener is what we
call a FEEDBACK)
2. Nonverbal communication provides some insight into a speaker's word choice. These things are
often communicated through facial expressions, hand gestures, posture, and even appearance, all of
which can convey something about the speaker.
(When we say verbal communication, here, we share information through our body language. So…
here you don’t have to speak or utter words to share your thoughts or ideas… The best example here
is those who are communicating through sign language.)
3. Visual communication includes signs, maps, or drawings as well as color or graphic design.
Visual aids can help a speaker remember important topics, give the audience something to look at,
and generally help convey it.
(Another examples are GIFs, videos, piecharts, inforgraphics, animation)

4. Written Communication is writing, typing, or printing symbols like numbers to convey

information.
(examples: email, internet websites, letters, proposal, telegrams, faxes, postcards….any business
letters…or reports.)
The stance is the manner and position in which a person stands. When speaking, keep a good
posture, stand straight with shoulders back, relaxed, and feet shoulder-width apart. Do not cross
your arms, put your hands in your pocket, or slouch. Face the audience as much as possible and
keep your body open.
(posture)

What is It

Oral language is the process of utilizing knowledge and skills to speak and listen effectively through
the proper use of true to life ideas/information, words, and grammar. Speaking loudly and clearly is
also a must, including proper toning of one's voice to achieve oral language fluency. One may use a
formal tone to meet and do campaigns, an informal tone when talking to friends or relatives, a joyful
tone when giving birthday or wedding messages, and a sad tone during eulogies, calamities, and
tragedies.
(oral language is the system through which we use spoken words to express knowledge, ideas and
feelings…it includes SPEAKING and LISTENING---- the way humans communicate with one
another. )
What is a good stance?
(Stance- how someone stands, especially when deliberately adopted)
• • Stand flat on your feet
• Stand with your feet shoulders width apart
• Have some movements (like using your hands and feet like walking etc.) but don't pace or fail
your arms like you are helping an airplane park .
(specially in public speaking)
Appropriate behavior refers to how you act and deliver a text through different facial expressions
such as happy, sad, angry, surprise, and afraid and body language like maintaining eye contact,
showing good posture and smile, using hand gestures tilting your head to one side.
Characteristics of good speakers
• • They have good eye contact with the audience (according to MSU.UDU, to maintain
eyecontact without staring, you should maintain eyecontact for 50% of the time while speaking and
70% of the time whiule listening. This helps to display interest and confidence)
• • They pause before and after important ideas (para madisgest ng husto yung mga listeners
yung imporatanteng punto sa lecture mo or speech mo)
• • They have a good posture
• • They are confident, relaxed, and energetic
• • They have a conversational tone
• They have speech organization
• They have a main idea like good points (in a way that your audience/the listeners respond
to what you are say by showing some facial expressions…kapag tumango sila meaning, sumasang-
ayon sila… same as through if they are clapping, they also agree with what you are saying… kapag
medyo tumaas yung isang kilay, mukang nagdidisagree yung listeners..something like that)
