Topic: Alternating Current

1. A 12 V resistance and an inductance of 0.05/πH are connected in series. Across the end of this circuit an
alternating voltage of 130 V and frequency 50 Hz is connected. Calculate the current in the circuit and the
potential difference across the inductance.
2. (i) Determine the value of phase difference between the current and the voltage in the given series L-C-R
circuit.

(ii) Calculate the Value of additional capacitor which may be joined suitably to the capacitor C that would
make the power factor of the circuit unity.
3. Study the circuits (a) and (b) shown in the figure answer the following question:

(i) Under which conditions would the rms currents in the two circuits be the same?
(ii) Can the rms current in circuit (b) be larger than that in (a)?
4. Show variation of following quantities with frequency of alternating e.m.f.
i. Capacitive reactance
ii. Inductive reactance
iii. Current through Series LCR circuit
iv. Impedance

5. A capacitor is connected in series with a bulb. The combination is connected to alternating source.
Discuss how the brightness of bulb will change if
i. Frequency of alternating source is increased..
ii. Capacitance is decreased.
6. Derive an expression for the average power consumed in a series LCR circuit connected to a.c. source in
which the phase difference between the voltage and the current in the circuit is Φ.
7. In the circuit given, calculate i) the capacitance C of the capacitor , if the power factor of the circuit is
unity and ii) also calculate the Q –factor of the circuit .Take ν =50Hz
8. A 200mH inductor is connected in series to a resistor of 10Ω. An AC supply of 220V, 50Hz is connected
across it. Calculate i) the rms value of current ii) the peak value of current iii) the power factor of the circuit
and write the equation for instantaneous value of current.
9. When an inductor L and a resistor R in series are connected across 12V,50Hz supply, a current of
0.5Aflows in the circuit, the current differs in phase from applied voltage by π/3 radian. Calculate L and R
