Equilibrium of Force System

This document discusses the concept of equilibrium as it relates to rigid bodies and force systems. It defines equilibrium as a rigid body being in a state where the external forces acting on it sum to zero. It provides conditions for static equilibrium, noting that concurrent forces acting on a body are in equilibrium if the sum of the forces in the x and y directions are both equal to zero. Examples and sample problems are also given to demonstrate determining equilibrium for concurrent and parallel force systems.

EQUILIBRIUM OF FORCE SYSTEM

CONCEPT
The concept of equilibrium encountered earlier in the context of particles can now be
generalized to the case of the rigid body:
Equilibrium of a Rigid Body A rigid body is in equilibrium when the external
forces acting on it form a system of forces equivalent to zero
EQUILIBRIUM OF CONCURRENT FORCE SYSTEM
In static, a body is said to be in equilibrium when the force system acting upon it has
a zero resultant.
Conditions of Static Equilibrium of Concurrent Forces
The sum of all forces in the x-direction or horizontal is zero.

The sum of all forces in the y-direction or vertical is zero.

EQUILIBRIUM OF CONCURRENT FORCE SYSTEM
Important Points for Equilibrium Forces
Two forces are in equilibrium if they are equal and oppositely directed.
Three coplanar forces in equilibrium are concurrent.
Three or more concurrent forces in equilibrium form a close polygon when connected
in head-to-tail manner.
SAMPLE PROBLEM
The cable and boom shown in Fig. P-308 support a load of 600 lb. Determine the
tensile force T in the cable and the compressive for C in the boom.
SOLUTION
EQUILIBRIUM OF PARALLEL FORCE SYSTEM
Conditions for Equilibrium of Parallel Forces

The sum of all the forces is zero.

The sum of moment at any point O is zero.

SAMPLE PROBLEM
Determine the reactions for the beam shown in Fig.
