WEEKS 1 & 2: ( September 14 - 18, 2015)

TOPICS: INTRODUCTION TO FRENCH

OBJECTIVES: The students should be able to…

 Identify some advantages of learning French as a foreign language.


 Identify the influence of French on English by listing French words adapted by the English.
 Carry out a research on the variety of French countries found around the world, with an
emphasis on the Caribbean.
 Learn some French cultural practices.
 Recite the French alphabet
 Recognize the sound associated with each French letter in order to write words spelt to them.
 Ask and respond to the question < Comment ça s’écrit?>

WEEKS 3&4: (September 21 – October 2, 2015)

TOPICS: GETTING TO KNOW YOU – ENCHANTÉ

OBJECTIVES: The students should be able to…

 Ask and respond to < Comment t’appelles-tu?>


 Ask and respond to <Comment ça va?>
 Ask and respond to <Comment allez-vous & Comment vas-tu?>
 Learn vocabulary surrounding greeting and saying good bye such as ENCHANTÉ
 Ask and respond to < Où est-ce que tu habites & Où habitez – vous?>
 Ask and respond to <Quel âge as-tu?>
 Learn the numbers from 1-15 in order to tell their ages
 Create a conversation between two persons meeting for the first time.
 Carry out a role play between 2 persons meeting for the first time, with near native pronunciation
 Use their French dictionaries effectively.

CONTENT

 Comment t’appelles-tu? – What is your name? / What are you called?


 Comment ça va? , Comment allez- vous? And Comment vas- tu?> are all ways of asking “How are you?”
The first is most popularly used, the second is used when showing respect to a single person, in a formal

situation and also when speaking to more than one person, and the third is used when speaking to one
person who is very well known to you, such as a family member, friend or peer.
 Both< Où est-ce que tu habites? and < Où habitez – vous?>ask the same thing- ‘Where do you live?’ The
first used with friends and family, the second with strangers and persons in authority. The response begins
<J’habite à …> = “I live at….:
 Comment ça s’écrit = How does one spell/write …
 GREETINGS: Bonjour! (Good morning) , Bon après-midi (Good afternoon),Bonsoir (Good evening), Bonne
nuit (Good night), Salut (Hi, Hello).
 GOODBYE : Au revoir (good bye), À bientôt (See you soon)

 OTHER VOCABULARY –
Enchanté = Nice to meet you
Ça va bien, merci = Fine thank you
Je vais (très) bien = I am (very) well
Bien, merci = Fine, thanks
Comme çi –comme ça = so so
Ça va mal = I’m not fine
Pas très bien = Not very well
Pas mal = Not bad

 Explain the incidence of masculine and feminine words in French
 Differentiate between masculine nouns and feminine nouns

 State the 3 indefinite articles and when to use each

 Use their dictionaries to inform themselves of the gender of nouns
 Be able to identify the classroom articles when they hear them.
 Pronounce the names of the classroom items with near native pronunciation.
 Ask and respond to <Qu’est-ce que c’est?>
 Learn some useful classroom instructions, like ‘Écoutez’

CONTENT

 In French all nouns are divided in 2 categories; masculine and feminine. They can be differentiated by the
articles which are used with them. Masculine nouns use the articles UN (A) and LE (THE). Feminine nouns use
UNE (A) and LA (THE). The plural for both UN and UNE are DES (SOME). The plural of both LE and LA are
LES (THE).

i. Adding –S to the singular
