EXERCISE -2 (Self Practice Problems)


1. A square hole of area 16 cm2 is placed at a distance of 24 cm from a lens of focal length 18 cm. Find the area of the
image. (Ans: 144 cm2)
2. A screen and an object are placed at a distance of 100 cm along a straight line. A lens produces an image on the screen
when placed at either of positions 50 cm apart. Find the focal length of the lens. (Ans: 18.75 cm)
3. A concave lens of focal length f produces an image (1/x) of the size of the object, then find the distance of the object
from the lens. (Ans: (x-1)f)
4. The plane faces of two identical plano-convex lenses each having focal length of 40 cm are placed against each
other to form a usual convex lens. Find the distance from this lens at which an object must be placed to obtain a
real, inverted image with magnification. (Ans: 40 cm)
5. A certain achromatic lens is formed from two thin lenses in contact having powers of +10, -6 diopter. Determine the
power and focal length of the combination. (Ans: Pe=4D, fe=25cm)
6. A lens forms a real image on a screen placed at a distance 100cm from the object. If the lense is moved 20cm
towards the screen another image is formed on the screen then its focal length is: (Ans: 24cm)
7. A Convex lens is placed in between the object and screen. The object and screen are separated by a distance x, the
lens produces the magnification m then the focal length of the lens is: (Ans.: f=mx/(m+1)2
8. A convex lens forms a real image of an object for its two different positions on a screen. If the height of the image in
the two case are respectively 8 cm and 2 cm, then calculate the height of the object. (Ans: 4 cm since C= C1C2 )
9. A converging lens has focal length of 10cm. What lens must be placed in its contact to produce a lens of focal

10. A plane mirror is kept behind a convex lens at a distance of 5 cm. When a pin is placed at a distance of 25 cm from
the lens then its image coincides with it, calculate the power of the lens (Ans: 4D)
11. A concave lens is placed between a concave mirror and a pin in such a way that the image of the pin coincides with
the pin. If the distance between mirror and the lens is 10 cm then calculate the focal length of the lens. The focal
length of the mirror is 10 cm and its distance from the pin is 30 cm. (Ans: -20 cm)
12. The maximum distance upto which a man can see distinctly is 200 cm. What lens he should use in order to see
distant objects distinctly? (Ans: Concave lens, - 200 cm)
13. For reading very small print a man keeps the page 15 cm from his eye. Calculate the focal length of the lens with
help of which he can hold the page at a distance of 25 cm.

14. Three lenses in contact have a combined focal length of 12 cm. When the third lens is removed, the combined focal
length is 60/7 cm. Find the third lens. (Ans: A diverging lens of focal length 30 cm)
15. A convex lens is mounted on an optical bench forms an image of an object on a screen, the magnification being 2.5.
The object and the screen are kept fixed and the lens is moved through a distance of 10 cm, then the sharp image with
magnification 0.5 is formed on the screen. Find the focal length of the convex lens. (Ans: 5 cm)
16. An object is placed at a distance of 20 cm to the left of and on the axis of a convex lens L1 of focal length 25 cm. A
second convex lens L2 of focal length 20 cm is placed coaxially to the right of the lens L1 at a distance of 10 cm from
L1. Find the position of the image from lens L2. (Ans: 24.4 cm)
17. A convex lens produces on a screen a real image of an object kept at a distance of 30 cm from it. When another lens
is kept in contact with the lens the object has to be shifted to a distance of 50 cm from this combination in order to
that the image may be formed at the same distance as before. Find the focal length of the second lens. (Ans: -75
cm)
18. A convex lens A of focal length 20 cm and a concave lens B of focal length 5 cm are kept along the same axis with a
distance ‘d’ between them. If a parallel beam of light falling on A leaves B as a parallel beam, then find d. (Ans: 15
cm)
19. A concave lens of focal length 15 cm made of glass (=3/2) is dipped in water (=4/3). What will be its focal length
in water? How it will behave? (Ans: 60 cm; diverging)
20. A convex lens of focal length 10 cm is made of glass (=1.52) is dipped in a liquid of refractive index 1.52.
Calculate its focal length and power. (Ans: f=; P=0)
21. A double convex lens of focal length 6 cm is made of glass of refractive index 1.5. Find the radius of curvature of
one surface which is double that of the other surface. (Ans: 9 cm)
22. There are two thin symmetrical lenses, one is converging with 1=1.7 and other diverging with  2=1.5.
Both lenses have same radii of curvature each 10 cm. The lenses were put close together and submerged in water.
What is the focal length of this system in water? (Ans: 33.3 cm)

23. A glass slab of thickness 18 cm and R.I. 3/2 is placed on a printed matter. Find the normal shift of the printed matter.
(Ans: 6 cm)
24. The refractive index of glass is 3/2. If a ray of light travels 90cm in glass, find the distance it travels in air during the
same time. (Ans: 135 cm)
25. A mark is made on the bottom of a beaker and microscope is focused on the mark. The microscope is then raised
through 3cm. To what height water must be poured in the beaker in order to bring the mark again in focus? (Ans:
12 cm)
26. A rectangular block of glass is placed on a mark made on the surface of the table and it is viewed from the vertical
position of eye. If refractive index of glass be and its thickness d, then find by how much the mark will appear to

27. A slab of glass 20cm thick and refractive index 1.5 is kept in front of a plane mirror and a pin is kept in front of it in

28. A microscope is focused on the scratch at the bottom of a thin beaker. A liquid is poured into it and the microscope
is again focused on the scratch at the bottom of the beaker. Then the microscope is focused on the lycopodium
power dusted on the surface. If the corresponding readings are 1.17, 2.02 and 4.57 cm respectively, find the
refractive index of the liquid. (Ans: 4/3)
29. The critical angle of a medium is 30o. Calculate the velocity of light in this medium, if velocity of light in vacuum is
3x108 m/sec. (Ans: 1.5x108 m/sec)
30. A ray of light passes from vacuum into a medium of refractive index , the angle of incidence is found to be twice
the angle of refraction. Find the angle of incidence. (Ans: 2 cos-1 μ /2)
31. A light ray is travelling from air to glass. The reflected and refracted rays are perpendicular to each other. If the
angle of incidence in air is i find the refractive index of glass. (Ans: tan i)
32. A ray of light from a denser medium strikes a rarer medium at an angle of incidence. The reflected and refracted
rays make an angle of 90o with each other. The angles of reflection and refraction are r and r1. Find the critical

33. The refractive index of water is 4/3. If a ray travels 24 cm in air, find the distance traveled by the light in water in the

34. Calculate the refractive index of the material of a prism of refracting angle A, if the angle of minimum deviation is

35. Angles of refraction inside a prism of refractive index 1.5 are 23o 28’ and 42o 42’, find the angle of prism

36. The refracting angle of a prism is 60o and the refractive index is 3 . What is its angle of minimum deviation?

37. If a light ray incidents normally on one of the faces of the prism of refractive index 2 and the emergent ray just
grazes the second face of the prism, then find the angle of deviation. (Ans: 600)
