Objectives
On completion of this experiment the student should be able to:
 Apply Thevenin concept on a resistive network.
 Calculate the current passing in the load resistance in a circuit and verify that it is
equal to the value of the current passing through the load of the Thevenin equivalent
circuit.

Introduction
In electrical circuit theory, Thevenin’s theorem for linear electrical networks states
that any combination of voltage sources, current sources and resistors with two terminals is
electrically equivalent to a single voltage source V and a single series resistor R.. Any
complex network can be reduced to a Thevenin's equivalent circuit consist of a single voltage
source and series resistance connected to a load.

To calculate the equivalent circuit, one needs a resistance and some voltage - two
unknowns. Thus two equations are needed. These two equations are usually obtained by
using the following steps

1. Calculate the output voltage, VAB, when in open circuit condition (no load resistor - meaning
infinite resistance). This is VTh.

2. RTh is found by having the voltage source short circuited and the current source opened. The
load resistance (RL) is kept zero.

3. After RTh and VTh are obtained, both are placed in series with R L and the resultant current is
measured.

Apparatus
1. NI Elvis with Prototyping Board
2. Resistors
3. DMM
4. Set of connecting wires
5. Set of jumper cables/wires (if necessary)

2
Procedure
1. Make all the required connections for the given circuit below on the prototyping board.

Figure 1: Original Circuit

2. Give 5V as in input voltage to your circuit.

3. Measure the current passing in the load resistor. Record your measurements in table 1.
4. Measure the voltage across the load resistor. Record your measurements in table 1.
5. Switch off the power supply and disconnect the load resistor from the circuit.
6. Turn on the power supply and measure the voltage between A & B terminals which is
VTH. Refer to figure 2. Record your measurements in table 1.

7. Switch off the power supply and disconnect it from the circuit. Have a wire placing it as
shown in figure 3.
8. Measure the resistance between terminals A & B which is equivalent to RTH. Record the
value in table 1.

9. Reconstruct the circuit as shown below. Measure the current passing through the load
resistor and the voltage across it. Record the values in table 1.
