Structures and Properties of Construction Materials – CES 151
Fall 2022

Assignment (1): Basic Fundamentals

1. Explain the requirement for selection of the construction materials.
2. State briefly the types of engineering materials.
3. Define the following: Physical properties – Chemical properties – Mechanical
properties – Thermal properties. Give two examples for each type.
4. Explain the difference between water absorption and water permeability.
5. Explain the different types of loading and draw the load-time relationships for
each type. Which type do you think it is more dangerous?
6. Define each of the following: stress – strength – strain – load – deformation.
7. Explain each of the following terms: elasticity – poission’s ratio – ductility -
toughness.
8. What is the corrosion of steel? State the factors that cause corrosion of steel.
9. What do you know about the following: Standard Specifications – Code of
Practice?
10.What are the organizations those are responsible to issue the standard
specifications? Give examples.
11.Explain briefly why and how the standard specifications can be updated.
12. Define the material safety factor, explain the different factors affect its value.
13.Ten concrete cubic specimens (10X10X10 cm) were tested in compression, the
failure loads were (13.5 – 15.0 – 14.0 - 16.5 – 14.3 – 15.1 - 13.1 - 14.3 - 16.5 –
17.1) tons.
a) Calculate the average compressive strength, standard deviation, coefficient of
variation.
b) What is your comment about the variability of these results?
14.Five concrete cubic specimens were tested in compression, dimensions and the
failure loads were:
Cube Dimensions
7x7x7 10x10x10 15x15x15 20x20x20 25x25x25
(cm)
Failure Load (ton) 14.7 30.0 67.5 120.0 187.5
a) Calculate the following:
 average compressive strength
 standard deviation
 coefficient of variation
b) What is your comment about the variability of these results?
