REFLECTION
One of our electives this semester is CLASSROOM OBSERVATION. I have a passion
for teaching, so with a passion to study this subject this semester Based on what I learned in the previous TESOL course, I will learn teaching skills and apply them. The teacher assigned my classmates and me to observe the classes of other teachers in my major to accomplish this. The purpose of this essay is to discuss the class I took and how it went. For this assignment, selecting a teacher to approach about observation, I chose Speaking 1 of Ms. Kim An —because she has good professional that I can learn to improve practice. Especially, It’s appropriate with my schedule. I explained to her that this was only an exercise, not in any way connected to judging her class. I am learning from the class to complete the assignment. I had to visit that classroom for three consecutive lessons to observe and learn. My visit began around 9 am on October 20th, Vietnamese Women's Day; this was so heartwarming to see all the male students giving flowers with best wishes for those who are female. The lesson began around 9:30 AM but at 9 AM with full students also the first day to attend the lesson of the freshman. The whole class was noised by the conversation of each table having a different chating to talk about. After a few minutes, appearing of the teacher made them silent which mean the lesson was beginning. The teacher walked into the classroom for the first day and greeting to everyone with a warm “Hello, morning everyone!” I stand up to the announcement that I would observe her class today. The teacher was more than happy to be helping future educators by letting me observe their teaching styles and learn new techniques to use. In the beginning, she introduced herself and guide the students to introduce themselves in the same way. The basic question would be asking about their name, hometown, and hobby. One by one student make an introduction and then they should remind their name from each other. When the students complete that task, Ms. Kim An shows them about introduce the course. The course with the course book “Let’s Talk 2-second edition”. It provides various topics such as “ Meeting new people, food, vacation time,…etc. From each topic, the teacher would ask some questions related. For example, In the topic “Food” she asks the student that “ Are you a foodie” or something like that. The teacher also introduced the evaluation of the classroom such as participation, midterm, and final test. The course with 7 topics as well as 7 assignments. At the end of the lesson each week, students would make a conversation and send it to the Google Classroom by working in groups or pairs. And the teacher’s job it’s taking notes, and giving back advice Move on to the first unit of the course, Unit 1 “ Meeting new people”. Students do the task lists and the question to meet as well as teach them about the way to break the ice. The teacher encourages them by helping them more confidence in speaking. They should more practice at home, talk to anyone else, or by themselves. To break the ice at the first meeting teachers show the slides about the personality as also the video tells them the way they can practice with each other. After that, Ms. Kim An would require all of the students to make a group of 4 people. They should begin a conversation with the list of ideas already on the slides. They called it “ Small Talk” and the discussion happened in 4 minutes. Finish the discussion by using the command word “ Time’s Over”. The time for discussion is over, the teacher takes the list of students and calls their names randomly. A student who is called will pick their partner to practice small talk. They talk about their name, hobbies, and personality also then the teacher would ask them what they know about their partner already. Besides that, the teacher also checks their pronunciation and encourage them to correct their mistake. One by one student practiced and based on their mistakes Ms. Kim An give them a structure for the conversation. The structure of the conversation with three parts such as open, body, and close. In open, most of them must greet and say “ hello” or the same things. The body often begins with the closer topic as their hobbies or the things they are interested in. Make a point of discussing plans at the end of the small talk. In this part, Ms. Kim An explained very clearly those points. At the end of the lesson, the teacher summarized all the parts that they have learned. Asking the whole class who are not clear or confused in any part of the lesson. The class finished with the assignment made conversation meetings and turn it into Google Classroom. The class that I observed had a great classroom atmosphere. By saying "great classroom atmospheres", I mean that most of the students were attentive to the teacher, eager to learn, asking questions and that no one person in the class was omitted from the class discussion or the learning of that particular day. During my observations, I never saw the teacher leave any students out of the lecture that they taught to their students that day. I was very impressed to see that no students were neglected, but instead were incorporated into the learning plan for that day and got a chance to ask questions of the teacher to help further their learning. The class I observed had good interactions between the students and teachers. As a future educator, I believe my biggest challenge will be trying to become flexible with my schedule and trying to motivate each student to learn and be active in class. Observing has taught me the skill of teaching, and I know what it feels like to become a teacher. The stage planning on the lesson, the classroom management…. It improves myself-awareness of their skills and also makes managers more effective at identifying areas for further growth. This helps to realize if any improvements are required to make the class more presentable or the changes the teacher needs to bring that will make his or her teaching technique more understandable. I think it was a great SPEAKING class, which took 3 hours. Most of those students were highly motivated to learn, and they facilitated the teacher in achieving her goal. The communicative approach was effectively used as well as contextualized grammar, there were so many scenarios to engage students in provided by the teacher were very reliable, the teacher was conscious and competent about cultural sensitiveness in her class with a clear topic, visual aids were clear and very interesting communication, materials. In conclusion, Observing gave me a lot of chances and experiences. Observing a classroom helped me get an understanding of why teachers have different teaching theories and management. Observing allows me to listen to what a teacher has to say to every question that is being asked and allows me to see what types of questions the teacher is asking. Observing allows me to see what is being acknowledged and what is not and what is being enhanced. It allows me to see how students are learning and absorbing what the teacher is saying and how it allows them to place it in their everyday life.
