An expository text is different from the free writing of any topic under the
sun. It strictly follows a specific structure. Each structure is accompanied by a
graphic organizer that can be presented in graphs, tables, charts, diagrams and
timelines.
The following are the structures used in writing an expository text.
1. Cause and Effect- one of the structures used in writing an expository text
that provides the reader facts, ideas or timeline that acts as a cause and
the other one is the effect.
2. Problem and Solution- another structure of expository text that has a
problem with lots of solution to solve this problem.
3. Description- this structure of expository texts used mostly descriptive
words to describe the attributes or characteristics of a certain topic, idea
or concept.
4. Compare and contrast- ideas presented show how certain things or ideas
are alike or different.
5. Sequence- ideas or information that are chronologically arranged or in
sequence or order.
Graphic organizers are visual or graphic representation of ideas,
information or concepts that are interrelated with each other. The most
frequently used graphic organizers are the Venn Diagram, which is usually
used to show the similarities and differences of a certain idea, the timeline,
which is used to show sequence of events with indication of date and time, and
the flow chart, which is used to present a flow of an action, method or
procedure.
Take a look at the sample graphic organizers below:

Now that you have learned about the different structures in writing an
expository text, examples of texts and the graphic organizers, you need to apply
what you have learned by constructing your own graphic organizer.

each sample text.
