 Chapter I
The Problem

A. Introduction
Every minute our world is changing and these changes are
uncontrollable, with these the standard of human is getting higher and higher
and so is the demand when it comes to technologies. That is why there is an
evolution in the innovations of these technologies to adapt to the needs of
people. Their type of entertainment also evolve from simple newspaper, to radio,
to television and now to what we call social media.
In todayʹ s generation, Social media become everyoneʹ s constant
companion especially for the students. There are lots of versions and variations
of these social media applications which are now available everywhere. Social
media, indeed, has been part of every individualʹ s life at present. Some students
are not aware that the social media has affected them. This issue leads me to
choose this title. This study aims to know the effects of social media to the grade
10 students of San Jose Pili National High School.

B. Statement of the Problem

Social media is considered as phenomenal in todayʹ s generation. It
conquered the world and became more popular to the youth of most nations
including the Philippines. This research generally aims to discover the effect of
social media to the grade 10 students of San Jose Pili National High School.
Specifically, the researcher aims to provide answer to the following questions:

1. Why does grade 10 students uses social media?

2. What type of social media application is trending to the grade 10 students
of SJPNHS nowadays?
3. What is the effect of social media to the grade 10 students of SJPNHS?

 C. Significance of the study
This study will be valuable and will be of great help to the following:
Parents. The result of this study would help them recognize the
importance of their support to their children and that their full time guidance are
highly needed.
Students. The study can serve as a guide to learn the basic lifelong
experiences in worthy and responsible use of Social media.
Future Researchers. They will be able to use the findings of this study
as a reference for further studies related to the subject matter of this research.
This will also be a great source of information, ideas and will serve as basis for
their study.

D. Scope and Delimitation

This study was conducted to determine whether Social media has an

effect to the Grade 10 students of San Jose Pili National High School. This study
was limited to San Jose Pili National High School particularly to the randomly
selected Grade 10 students as respondents of the study who are constantly using
social media applications. On the other hand, this study does not include Grades
7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 and is not applicable to other schools.

Definition of Terms

Social Media - Websites and applications that enable users to create and share
content or to participate in social networking.

Students – A person who attends school and studies something.

Effect – A change that is a result or consequence of an action or other cause.

Methodology

A. Research Design
This study will determine the effect of social media to the randomly
selected grade 10 students of San Jose Pili National High School SY 2018-
2019. Thus, survey type of research is employed to get the sampling of
individual units from a population through the use of survey data
collection in order to obtain the accuracy of responses to surveys.
B. Research Locale
This study is conducted at San Jose Pili National High School which
is located in National Highway, Zone 7 San Jose, Pili, Camarines Sur.

C. Respondents of the Study

The respondents of this study are the Grade 10 students of San Jose
Pili National High School. Specifically the respondents came from the sections
of Archimedes, Aristotle, Dalton, Einstein, Galileo, Mendel and Newton. Out of
the 329 total population of Grade 10, the researcher obtain 30% or 99 as the
sample size which is then divided between the seven groups.

D. Instrument of the Study

In order to determine the effect of social media to the Grade 10
Students of San Jose Pili National High School, a survey questionnaire instrument
were used. The questionnaire was composed of only two parts, namely part I
contained the respondents personal data and part II was the question proper.
The questions were based on the ideas gathered from the internet.
