Jason C. Valenzuela

Keywords: Strategies, Rice Farmers, Interview Method, Qualitative Research

This study is conducted to know the strategies of rice farmers in Sitio Caorasan in

producing rice crop. There are five (5) respondents in this study which are the rice farmers from

Sitio Caorasan, San Agustin, Pili and they are selected according to the criteria provided by the

researchers. In gathering the data, the researchers used interview method. With this, the

researchers are able to determine the strategies of rice farmers, their motivation or inspiration to

come up with these strategies and the effects of it. The sample questions to the respondents are as

follows:

1. What are your strategies in terms of;

 Seed Selection

 Crop Establishment

 Crop Harvesting

2. How did you come up with these strategies?

3. What are the effects of these strategies to your farming?

This study employs qualitative type of research and used Case Study for the research

design. The result of this study showed that the strategy of the rice farmers in Sitio Caorasan is

still the traditional way of farming. (1) They select seeds depending to the variety they want. (2)

i
They establish the crop by completing the needs of it such as the fertilizers, pesticides and other

chemicals. (3) They still use traditional tool in harvesting the crop. (4) They use modernized

machineries but none of them owed one, they just rent when they need it. Also, they apply new

chemicals and test if it is really applicable or if it helps in preventing damages to the crop.

Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) The rice farmers of

Sitio Caorasan are still engaged in the traditional ways of farming. They still use traditional tools

and equipment in planting and harvesting grains. Also, their strategy is just similar to each other.

(2) The rice farmers used modernized machines but they are hesitant sometimes due to lack of

financial capabilities. Almost all of them don’t own modernized machineries and rent when they

needed it. (3) The effect of their strategies to rice farming are just enough to keep their livelihood

sustainable.

Based on the conclusions, the following recommendations were established: (1) To the

Rice Farmers- They should continue to develop and improve their strategy in order to produce

good harvest and gain more profit. (2) To the Department of Agriculture- They should provide

farming equipment or machineries to the rice farmers so that the rice farmers would not rent

modernized machines anymore. They should also continue to produced and developed strategies

that will help the rice farmers and (3) To the Future Researchers- This research could be useful

for them as a guide and basis to their related topic. They could improve and enhance this

research by conducting further and deeper investigation and analysis.
