Lesson Title : Understanding and Expressing Emotions

Objective : Students will be able to identify and label different emotions, and express their own
emotions in a healthy and appropriate way. The objectives for the lesson are clearly stated and
aligned with the appropriate grade-level standards for understanding and expressing emotions.
Materials:
Emotion powerpoint with pictures and labels
Worksheet with scenarios and space for students to write or draw their emotions/ Handout
with examples of emotions and their effects
Markers or crayons
Introduction:
➢ Using characters from Disney/Pixar movie “Inside Out” students will learn about the 5
basic emotions.
➢ Colors will be used to help students remember the emotions/moods.
➢ The lesson begins with a clear and engaging introduction to the topic of emotions,
including a brief overview of the skills and concepts that will be covered. Begin by
discussing what emotions are and why they are important. Have students brainstorm a list
of different emotions and discuss how they can be expressed through facial expressions,
body language, and words. Discuss how different emotions can be expressed through
facial expressions, body language, and words. The lesson provides step-by-step
instructions for teaching the skills and concepts, using a variety of teaching strategies and
materials to engage and support all learners.
Instruction:
1. Discuss healthy and appropriate ways to express emotions, such as talking to a trusted
adult or friend, journaling, or engaging in a physical activity.
2. Distribute the worksheets with scenarios and have students write or draw their emotions
in response to each scenario.
3. Have students share their responses with the class and discuss how different emotions can
be expressed in different ways.
4. Have students practice expressing their emotions in a healthy and appropriate way, using
words and body language to communicate their feelings.
5. Have students discuss and match the pictures on the cards to the corresponding emotion
labels.
Assessment:
➢ The lesson includes a formative assessment to check for understanding, and provides
opportunities for students to self-assess and reflect on their learning.

2. Collect and review the worksheets to assess students' ability to express their emotions in
a healthy and appropriate way.
Differentiation:
➢ The lesson includes strategies to support the needs of diverse learners, including
accommodations and modifications as needed.
For struggling learners, provide additional support and scaffolding with the emotion powerpoint
and worksheet.
For advanced learners, challenge them to create their own scenarios and express their emotions
in a creative way.
