Additional Assignment Questions

The document contains 8 questions related to operations research and management science problems. Question 1 involves solving a linear programming problem and determining the range of an objective function coefficient for optimality and the effect of changing the objective function. Question 2 formulates the dual of a linear programming problem with multiple constraints and discusses the effect of changing several constraints simultaneously. Question 3 calculates operating characteristics like utilization and queue lengths for an M/M/c queue. Question 4 calculates performance measures for an M/M/∞ queue inspection model. Question 5 determines operating characteristics for an inspection queue and calculates the arrival rate increase needed to justify adding a second server.

Additional Assignment Questions

1. Solve the following LPP and determine:

a. the range of c1 for which the current solution remains optimal.
b. the effect of changing the objective function to 5x1 + x2 + 7x3
Maximize Z = 4x1 + 3x2 + 6x3
subject to 2x1 + 3x2 + 2x3 ≤ 440
4x1 + 3x3 ≤ 470
2x1 + 5x2 ≤ 430
x1, x2, x3 ≥ 0
2. A ladies dress producing company produces two different sizes of dresses (named as D 1, and
D2).The unit profits on these products are birr 2 for D1 and birr 5 for D2. These products require
three types of resources – manpower, material and machines. The followings are the possible
constraints of the resources, where x1 and x2 denote the optimal quantity of D1 and D2 to be
produced.
x1 + 4x2 ≤ 24, (manpower requirement)
3x1+ x2 ≤ 21, (material requirement)
x1 + x2 ≤ 9, (machine requirement), where x1, x2 ≥ 0
a. Write its dual programming
b. Discuss the effect of changing the requirement of manpower from 24 to 10, the requirement
of materials from 21 to 60, and the requirement of the machines from 9 to 30. Consider a
simultaneous change.
3. The following data related to a super-market is given
λ = 10 customers per hr

µ = 4 customers per hr

c = 3 channels

a. Determine the operating characteristics (P0, Ns, Nq,Ts, and Tq) for the system
b. It is noted by a store manager that the waiting times in the systems and queue are on the higher
side to minimize the frustration of the customers, and manager has decided to put extra
channels. Compute the operating characteristics for this new arrangement by taking C= 4,
compare the results with a pervious situation and write a detailed summary for the results.
4. At an inspector center in manufacturing system, boxes of parts arrive according to Poisson process
at a rate of 12 per hrs. Each box contains 100 parts and 10 parts are drawn and inspected
separately. Inspection time is exponentially distributed with a mean of 20 seconds. Calculate all
the performance measures for this model.
5. An XYZ Textile manufacturing company undergoes an inspection for its products. Incoming
material to the inspection section arrives at the rate of 3 items per hour. The inspection section
takes 15 minutes on average to inspect the quality of each item.
a. Determine the operating characteristics (Po, Ls, Lq, Ws, Wq) for the system.
b. What is the probability that the item arriving at the inspection section will have to wait?
c. The company will install another inspection section when convinced that an item will have to
wait at least 1 hr for the inspection. By how much the flow rate of items be increased in order
to justify the second inspection section?
6. Find the initial basic feasible and optimal solutions of the following transportation problem using a
Northwest rule and MODI methods, respectively. Quantities indicate transportation cost, demand and

7. A T-shirt producing company has two firms. Each produces white, black and red color t-shirts and
sells their products in the market with the indicated net profit per product. At each of the
production sites, the firm can produce only one shirt. Determine which shirts must be produced
using game theory.

8. Two conditions (in control and out of control) of a machine affect its productivity. The
transition diagram (daily basis) is given below. The productivity of the machine on any day
can be expressed by the following formula. Find the productivity on the 3rd day if the
machine starts in control. The current machine productivity is 12 units per machine per day.
Productivity on nth day = productivity on (n-1)th day *{1+ Pn(In) - Pn(Out)}
Where
 n is the number of day
 Pn(In) is the probability that the machine is in control on the nth day
 Pn(Out) is the probability that the machine is out of control on the nth day
