The possessive phrase shows ownership by placing the owned item first followed by the owner. The owned item is called al-mudhaf and the owner is called al-mudhaf ilayh. Al-mudhaf ilayh always ends with a harakah. Possessive phrases function like other phrases and can take the place of a main part of a sentence. One al-mudhaf can have multiple al-mudhaf ilayhs and all but the middle al-mudhaf ilayh will have a harakah.

This is made by placing the owned item,


thereafter the owner.

The second word, the owner, is called ‫ضافُ إِلَْي ُِه‬
