Why Do We Study Tawheed?

56 :‫ِﻟﯾَْﻌﺑ ُد ُوِن اﻟذارﯾﺎت‬ ‫ط ِﯾّﺑَﺔً َوﻟَﻧَْﺟِزﯾَﻧﱠُﮭْم‬
َ ً ‫ُﻣْؤِﻣٌن ﻓَﻠَﻧ ُْﺣِﯾﯾَﻧﱠﮫ ُ َﺣﯾَﺎة‬
And I did not create the jinn and
mankind except to worship Me.
‫ﺳِن َﻣﺎ َﻛﺎﻧ ُوا ﯾَْﻌَﻣﻠ ُوَن‬ َ ‫أَْﺟَرھُم ِﺑﺄ َْﺣ‬
97:‫اﻟﻧﺣل‬
Whoever does righteousness, whether
male or female, while he is a believer -

َ َ‫ َﻻ ﯾَْﻐِﻔُر أَْن ﯾ ُْﺷَرَك ِﺑِﮫ َوﯾَْﻐِﻔُر َﻣﺎ د ُوَن ذَِﻟَك ِﻟَﻣْن ﯾ‬U
48:‫ﺷﺎء اﻟﻧﺳﺎء‬ َ ‫ِإﱠن ا ﱠ‬
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what
is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with
Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.
‫ﺻﺎٍر‬ ‫ﻋﻠَْﯾِﮫ اْﻟَﺟﻧﱠﺔَ َوَﻣﺄ َْواه ُ اﻟﻧﱠﺎُر ۖ َوَﻣﺎ ِﻟﻠ ﱠ‬
َ ‫ظﺎِﻟِﻣﯾَن ِﻣْن أ َﻧ‬ ِ ‫ِإﻧﱠﮫ ُ َﻣن ﯾ ُْﺷِرْك ِﺑﺎ ﱠ‬
َ ُ2‫ ﻓَﻘَْد َﺣﱠرَم اﱠ‬2
72 : ‫اﻟﻣﺎﺋدة‬
" Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him

‫َوﻟَﯾ ُﺑَ ِد ّﻟَﻧﱠُﮭْم ِﻣْن ﺑَْﻌِد َﺧْوِﻓِﮭْم أَْﻣﻧًﺎ ۚ ﯾَْﻌﺑ ُد ُوﻧَِﻧﻲ َﻻ‬

‫ھُُم اْﻟﻔَﺎِﺳﻘ ُوَن‬

About The Author

Sheikh-ul-Islam, Muhammad bin Abdul-Wahhab, was born in 1115
H. in the city of Uyainah, seventy kilometers northwest of Riyadh,
the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He belonged to a highly
respectable and scholarly family; his father Sheikh Abdul-Wahhab
bin Sulaiman, characterized by his profound scholarship and
righteousness, inherited an exalted status from his ancestor
Sheikh Sulaiman bin Ali, the chief of the scholars and well versed
in teaching, writing and giving verdict.

First Matter
ُ ‫ وﻣﻌرﻓﺔ‬،‫ﷲ‬ ِ ُ ‫ اﻟِﻌْﻠُم؛ وھَو ﻣﻌرﻓﺔ‬:‫اﻷ ُوﻟﻰ‬
.‫ وﻣﻌرﻓﺔ ُ دﯾِن اﻹﺳﻼِم ﺑﺎﻷدﻟِﺔ‬،‫ﻧﺑﯾِِّﮫ‬
First: Knowledge, which means: awareness
of Allah, awareness of His Prophet, and
awareness of the Religion of Islam, based
on evidences.

What is meant by knowledge here, is al-’ilm ash-shar’ee (the

legislated Islamic knowledge) because this is what is obligatory
to learn upon every Muslim. Scholars have classified ilm into two
categories: Al-Waajib Al-’Aynee and Al-Waajib Al-Kifaayah

If one recites the Qur’an, then he knows that Allah is the one who created
everything and gives life and death. So the Qur’an provides knowledge and
awareness of Allah by way of His Names, Attributes and Actions.

Ibn ul-Qayyim said in Al-Kaafiyat-ush-Shaafiyah:

‫ﻗﺎل اﻟﺻﺣﺎﺑﺔ ھم أوﻟو اﻟﻌرﻓﺎن‬ .‫اﻟﻌﻠم ﻗﺎل ﷲ ﻗﺎل رﺳوﻟﮫ‬
‫ﺑﯾن اﻟرﺳول وﺑﯾن رأي ﻓﻼن‬ ‫ﻣﺎ اﻟﻌﻠم ﻧﺻﺑك ﻟﻠﺧﻼف ﺳﻔﺎھﺔ‬
Knowledge is Allaah said, His Prophet said,
The Companions said-they are the possessors of knowledge
and awareness
Knowledge is not that you foolishly raise up a disagreement
Between the Messenger and the opinion of so-and-so.

Sources of Knowledge

Sunnah of Sayings of the

Al-Qur’an
Rasoolullah ‫ﷺ‬ Salaf-As-Saliheen

As for the sayings of the ulemaa, then they only explain and clarify
the speech of Allah and His Rasool ‫ﷺ‬, and some of them may
contain a mistake, and the proofs are not the speech of the ulemaa.

The first whom the fire will be kindled are three

kinds of people and from them is a scholar who
has sought knowledge and yet did not act upon
it as mentioned in the below hadith:

،‫إن ﻣن أول ﻣن ﺗﺳﻌر ﺑﮭم اﻟﻧﺎر ﯾوم اﻟﻘﯾﺎﻣﮫ‬

‫ﻋﺎﻟم ﻟم ﯾﻌﻣل ﺑﻌﻠﻣﮫ‬
“That from the first of those for whom the Fire will
be made to blaze on the Day of Resurrection will be
a scholar who does not act upon his knowledge.”
(Tirmidhi, 2382. Grade: Saheeh

Every action requires two conditions

Ikhlas Ittiba-e-Rasool

‫س َﻋﻠَْﯾِﮫ أ َْﻣُرﻧَﺎ َﻓُﮭَو َرد ﱞ‬

َ ‫َﻣْن َﻋِﻣَل َﻋَﻣًﻼ ﻟَْﯾ‬
“Whoever does an action which our affair is not in
accordance with, then it will be rejected.” [Sahih
Muslim 1718]

ِ َ‫ ۚ َﻋﻠَٰﻰ ﺑ‬N
‫ َوَﻣﺎ أ َﻧَﺎ ِﻣَن اْﻟُﻣْﺷِرِﻛﯾَن‬Nِ ‫َوَﻣِن اﺗ ﱠﺑَﻌَِﻧﻲ ۖ َوﺳُْﺑَﺣﺎَن ا ﱠ‬
Say, ‘This is my way, I invite to Allah upon insight; I and
those who follow me. Exalted is Allah, and I am not of
those who worship others with Him. [12:108]

Say, ‘This is my way’ َ ‫ﻗ ُْل َٰھِذِه‬

‫ﺳِﺑﯾِﻠﻲ‬
That which is being pointed at is everything the Messenger came with
from the legislation: Qur’an and authentic Hadeeth.

I invite to Allah ِ ‫أ َْدﻋُو ِإﻟَﻰ ا ﱠ‬

I and those who follow me ‫ا َﻧَﺎ َوَﻣِن اﺗ ﱠﺑَﻌَِﻧﻲ‬

Scholars have two opinions: 1) This returns to ‘I invite to Allah’:
Rasoolullah ‫ ﷺ‬and his followers call towards Allah 2) ‘Upon insight’- he

By the time! Verily mankind is at loss- except for
those who believe and perform righteous deeds,

“Whoever swore by other than Allah has

Imam Shafi’ee’s Saying

ُ‫ ﻟَْو َﻣﺎ أ َْﻧَزَل ﷲ‬:Zُ‫ﻲ َرِﺣَﻣﮫ ُ ا‬ ‫ﻗَﺎَل اﻟ ﱠ‬
‫ﺷﺎِﻓِﻌ ﱡ‬
‫ﺳْوَرةَ ﻟََﻛﻔَﺗُْﮭْم‬
‫ﻋﻠَﻰ َﺧْﻠِﻘِﮫ إﱠﻻ َھِذِه اﻟ ﱡ‬ َ ً‫ُﺣﱠﺟﺔ‬
Ash-Shafi’ee rahimahullah said: “If Allah had not
sent down any proof upon His creation except
this surah, then that would have sufficed for
them.”

Who is Imam Shafi’ee?

He is Abu ‘Abdullah Muhammad bin Idris
bin ‘Abbas bin ‘Uthman bin Shafi’ee. He
was born in Ghazzah in 150 A.H., and he
died in Egypt in 204 A.H. He is one of the
four Imams.

Imam Shafi’ee doesn’t mean that this Surah is sufficient for the
creation regarding all of the Shari’ah, but what he means is that it
suffices the creation as an encouragement to hold firmly to the
religion of Allah with the four principles
He said this saying because any insightful person would hasten
to free himself from such loss but emulating these four qualities
if he listens to this Surah. Also Allah has made the reasons for
wretchedness and means for true happiness and success clear in
this Surah.

ُU‫ }ﻓَﺎْﻋﻠَْم أَﻧﱠﮫ ُ َﻻ ِإﻟَﮫَ ِإﱠﻻ اﱠ‬:‫ واﻟدﻟﯾُل ﻗوﻟ ُﮫ ﺗﻌﺎﻟَﻰ‬،‫واﻟﻌﻣِل‬
.‫ ﻓﺑدأَ ﺑﺎﻟﻌﻠِم ﻗﺑَل اﻟﻘوِل واﻟﻌﻣِل‬.[١٩ :‫َواْﺳﺗ َْﻐِﻔْر ِﻟذَْﻧِﺑَك{ ]ﻣﺣﻣد‬
And al-Bukhari rahimahullahu said: “Chapter:
Knowledge comes before speech and action; and

except Allah and seek forgiveness for your sin and

Who is Imam Bukhari?

He is Abu ‘Abdullah Muhammad Bin Isma’il Bin
Ibrahim Bin Al-Mughirah Al-Bukhari. He was born
in Bukhara in Shawwal 194 A.H., he grew up as
an orphan under the guardianship of his mother.
He died in Khartank, a city about two Farsakhs
from Samarqand, during the night of Eid Al-Fitr in
the year 256 A.H.

Allah has preceded knowledge over action (istighfaar), because

if action is built upon ignorance it will not benefit the person, so
he should begin with knowledge first and then act upon what he
has learnt, this is the foundation.

worship Allah and to forbid us from shirk and kufr, and from sins.

indeed obeyed Allah. [4:80]

ِۚ ‫ع ِﺑﺈِۡذِن ٱ ﱠ‬
N َ ُ ‫ﺳۡﻠﻧَﺎ ِﻣن ﱠرﺳُوٍل ِإﱠﻻ ِﻟﯾ‬
َ ‫طﺎ‬ َ ‫َوَﻣﺎ ٓ أ َۡر‬
And We did not send any Messenger except
that he should be obeyed by the permission
of Allah. [4:64]

ْۚ‫َوِإن ﺗ ُِطﯾﻌ ُوه ُ ﺗ َۡﮭﺗ َد ُوا‬

And if you obey him (the Prophet ‫ )ﷺ‬you will
be rightly guided. [24:54]

ُ ‫َوأ َِطﯾﻌ ُواْ ٱﻟﱠرﺳُوَل ﻟَﻌَﻠﱠ‬

‫ۡم ﺗ ُۡرَﺣُﻣوَن‬l
And obey the Messenger that you may be
shown mercy. [24:56]

Proof From The Ahadith

‫ﺳﻠﱠَم ﻗَﺎَل ﻛُﱡل‬ َ ‫ُ َﻋﻠَْﯾِﮫ َو‬U‫ﺻﻠﱠﻰ اﱠ‬

َ U ِ ‫َﻋْن أَِﺑﻲ ھَُرْﯾَرةَ أَﱠن َرﺳُوَل ا ﱠ‬
‫ َوَﻣْن ﯾَﺄ ْﺑَﻰ‬U
ِ ‫أ ُﱠﻣِﺗﻲ ﯾَْدُﺧﻠ ُوَن اْﻟَﺟﻧﱠﺔَ ِإﱠﻻ َﻣْن أَﺑَﻰ ﻗَﺎﻟ ُوا ﯾَﺎ َرﺳُوَل ا ﱠ‬
‫ﺻﺎِﻧﻲ ﻓَﻘَْد أَﺑَﻰ‬ َ ‫طﺎَﻋِﻧﻲ دََﺧَل اْﻟَﺟﻧﱠﺔَ َوَﻣْن َﻋ‬ َ َ‫ﻗَﺎَل َﻣْن أ‬
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and
blessings be upon him, said, “Everyone from my nation will
enter Paradise but those who refuse.” They said, “O
Messenger of Allah, who will refuse?” The Prophet said,
“Whoever obeys me enters Paradise, and whoever disobeys
me has refused.”

ً‫ﺳﻠﻧَﺎ إِﻟَْﯾﻛُْم َرﺳُوﻻ‬ َ ‫ }إﻧﱠﺎ أ َْر‬:‫واﻟد ﱠﻟﯾُل َﻗوﻟﮫ ُ ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬

* ً‫ﻋْوَن َرﺳُوﻻ‬ َ ‫ﺳْﻠﻧَﺎ إِﻻ ﻓِْر‬ َ ‫ﻋﻠَْﯾﻛُْم َﻛَﻣﺎ أ َْر‬
َ ً ‫ﺷﺎِھدا‬
َ
{ً‫ﻋْوُن اﻟﱠرﺳُوَل ﻓَﺄ ََﺧْذﻧَﺎهُ أ َْﺧذا ً َوﺑِﯾﻼ‬ َ ‫ﺻﻰ ﻓِْر‬ َ َ‫ﻓَﻌ‬
The proof for this is Allah’s statement: “Verily, We
sent to you a Messenger, to be a witness over
you, just as we sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. But
Pharaoh disobeyed the Messenger (i.e. Musa) so
We seized him with a severe punishment” [Surah
Al-Muzzammil: 15-16]

ً‫َرﺳُوﻻ‬ ‫ِإَﻟْﯾﻛُْم‬ َ ‫أَْر‬

‫ﺳﻠﻧَﺎ‬ ‫إﻧﱠﺎ‬
A Messenger To you We sent Indeed We

Fir’awn was the tyrannical king in Egypt who claimed

Lordship for himself and disobeyed Musa ‫ ﻋﻠﯾﮫ اﻟﺳﻼم‬, the
Messenger sent to him. So, he and his people were
punished.

Punishments given to Fir’awn and his people

In the World In the Barzakh (life

If one disobeys the Messenger of Allah ‫ﷺ‬, just like how

Fir’awn did to his prophet, then he will be seized with a severe
punishment as Allah Ta’ala said. This is the first issue (about
Ar-Rububiyyah).

The Second Matter

‫ﺿﻰ أْن ﯾ ُﺷَرَك َﻣﻌَﮫ ُ أ ََﺣد ٌ ﻓﻲ‬ َ ‫ﷲ ﻻ ﯾَر‬ َ ‫ أ َﱠن‬:ُ ‫اﻟﺛ ﱠﺎﻧﯾﺔ‬
‫ﺳل‬ َ ‫ﻲ ُﻣر‬ ٌ ‫ب وﻻ ﻧﺑ‬ ٌ ‫ِﻋﺑﺎدَﺗِِﮫ ﻻ َﻣﻠٌَك ُﻣﻘﱠر‬
Second: Allah is not pleased with anyone
being mixed into worship with Him– neither
an angel brought close nor a prophet that
was sent.

Tawheed Ar- Leads to Tawheed Al-

Rububiyyah Uluhiyyah
If you know that Allah is the only One who created you and who provides
for you- you will surrender to Him by singling out Him out in worship.

Worship will not benefit except with

Ikhlas Tawheed
If it is mixed with shirk then it is corrupted.

Proofs From The Qur’an

‫ ۖﺎ‬o‫ﺷۡﯾ ۟ـ‬
َ ‫ َوَﻻ ﺗ ُۡﺷِرﻛُواْ ِﺑِﮫۦ‬N
َ ‫َوٱۡﻋﺑ ُد ُواْ ٱ ﱠ‬
And worship Allah and do not associate
anything along with Him. [4:36]

َ ‫ﯨۡن أ َۡﺷَرۡﻛ‬rَ‫ﻰ ِإﻟَۡﯾَك َوِإﻟَﻰ ٱﻟﱠِذﯾَن ِﻣن َﻗۡﺑِﻠَك ﻟ‬

‫ت‬ ‫ﺣ‬ِ ‫و‬ ُ ‫َوﻟََﻘۡد أ‬
َ
ۡ
‫طﱠن َﻋَﻣﻠ َُك َوﻟَﺗ َﻛُوﻧَﱠن ِﻣَن ٱﻟَﺧٰـِﺳِرﯾَن‬ َ َ‫ﻟَﯾَۡﺣﺑ‬
And it was revealed to you (O Muhammad) and to
those Messengers who came before you, that if you
associate anything with Allah then all your deeds will
be rendered null and void, and then you would
certainly be from the losers. [39:65]

َ ‫َوﻟَ ۡو أ َۡﺷَرﻛُواْ ﻟََﺣِﺑ‬

‫ط َﻋۡﻧُﮭم ﱠﻣﺎ َﻛﺎﻧ ُواْ ﯾَۡﻌَﻣﻠ ُوَن‬
And if they committed shirk then whatever
deeds they had done would be rendered null
and void. [6:88]

ۖe ِ ‫ﻲ ِإ ٰﻟََﮭْﯾِن ِﻣن د ُوِن ا ﱠ‬ َ ‫ِﻟﻠﻧﱠﺎِس اﺗ ﱠِﺧذ ُوﻧِﻲ َوأ ُِّﻣ‬ ‫ِﻟْﻠَﻣَﻼﺋَِﻛِﺔ أََٰھُؤَﻻِء ِإﯾﱠﺎﻛُْم َﻛﺎﻧ ُوا‬
‫س‬َ ‫ﻗَﺎَل ﺳُْﺑَﺣﺎﻧََك َﻣﺎ ﯾَﻛُوُن ِﻟﻲ أَْن أَﻗ ُوَل َﻣﺎ ﻟَْﯾ‬ ‫ت َوِﻟﯾﱡﻧَﺎ‬ َ ‫ ﻗَﺎﻟ ُوا ﺳُْﺑَﺣﺎﻧََك أَﻧ‬.‫ﯾَْﻌﺑ ُد ُوَن‬
َ ‫ت ﻗ ُْﻠﺗ ُﮫ ُ ﻓَﻘَْد‬
‫ﻋِﻠْﻣﺗ َﮫ ُ ۚ ﺗ َْﻌﻠَُم َﻣﺎ‬ ُ ‫ق ۚ ِإن ﻛُﻧ‬ ٍ ّ ‫ِﻟﻲ ﺑَِﺣ‬ ‫ِﻣن د ُوﻧِِﮭم ۖ ﺑَْل َﻛﺎﻧ ُوا ﯾَْﻌﺑ ُد ُوَن‬
‫ت‬َ ‫ﺳَك ۚ ِإﻧﱠَك أَﻧ‬ ِ ‫ﺳﻲ َوَﻻ أَْﻋﻠَُم َﻣﺎ ﻓِﻲ ﻧَْﻔ‬ ِ ‫ﻓِﻲ ﻧَْﻔ‬ ‫اْﻟِﺟﱠن ۖ أَْﻛﺛ َُرھُم ﺑِِﮭم ﱡﻣْؤِﻣﻧ ُوَن{ ]ﺳﺑﺈ‬
[116 : ‫ب{ ]اﻟﻣﺎﺋدة‬ ِ ‫ﻋﱠﻼُم اْﻟﻐ ُﯾ ُو‬ َ [41-40:
And (remember) when Allâh will say “Was it you that these people
(on the Day of Resurrection): “O ‘Īsā used to worship?” (40) They
(Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)! Did you (the angels) will say: “Glorified
say unto men: ‘Worship me and my are You! You are our Walî
mother as two gods besides Allâh?’ ” He (Lord) instead of them. Nay,
will say: “Glory be to You! It was not for but they used to worship the
me to say what I had no right (to say). jinn; most of them were
believers in them.”

:‫واﻟد ﱠﻟﯾُل َﻗوﻟﮫ ُ ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬

ً ‫ﷲ أ ََﺣدا‬ ِ َ‫وأ َﱠن اْﻟَﻣﺳﺎِﺟد‬
ِ ‫ ﻓَﻼَ ﺗ َْدﻋُوا َﻣَﻊ‬m
The proof for this is: “And verily the masaajid
belong to Allaah, so do not call unto anyone
along with Allaah.” [Surah Al-Jinn: 18]

There are three opinions with regard to the meaning of

‘Masaajid’ and they could easily be reconciled:

The mosques The body The entire earth; “The earth

The Third Matter

‫ﷲ ﻻ ﯾَﺟوُز‬َ َ‫ع اﻟﱠرﺳوَل َوَوّﺣد‬ َ ‫ أﱠن َﻣن أطﺎ‬:ُ ‫اﻟﺛﺎﻟﺛﺔ‬
َ ‫ﻟَﮫ ُ ﻣواﻻة ُ ﻣْن ﺣﺎد ﱠ‬
َ ‫ َوﻟو َﻛﺎَن أﻗر‬،ُ ‫ﷲ َوَرﺳُوﻟَﮫ‬
‫ب‬
‫ﻗَِرﯾب‬
Third: Whoever obeys the Messenger (i.e.
Muhammad) and singles Allah out (in worship),
it is not permissible for him to take as allies
those who oppose Allah and His Messenger,
not even if they are close relatives.

Since Allah is not pleased with kufr and shirk, it is

Sheikh Ibn obligatory that the Believer is also not pleased with
them. This is because the Believers loving and
Uthaymeen’s hating must conform to what Allah loves and hates;
explanation so that he is angry with that which angers Allah,
and is pleased with that which pleases Allah.

Loving and hating for the sake of Allah has 3 technical

terms which all give the same meaning:

Al Walaa’ Wal Al Muwaalaah wal Al Hubbu Fillaah Wal

Baraa’ Mu’aadaah Bughdu Fillaah
‫اﻟوﻻء واﻟﺑراء‬ ‫اﻟﻣواﻻة واﻟﻣﻌﺎداة‬ ‫اﻟﺣب ﻓﻲ ﷲ واﻟﺑﻐض‬

Al Walaa/ Al Muwaalat

Proofs From The Qur’an

ٍ ‫ﺿُﮭْم أ َْوِﻟﯾَﺎُء ﺑَْﻌ‬
‫ض‬ ُ ‫َواْﻟُﻣْؤِﻣﻧ ُوَن َواْﻟُﻣْؤِﻣﻧَﺎ‬
ُ ‫ت ﺑَْﻌ‬
And the believing men and the believing women
are friends and allies to each other. [9: 71]

‫ﯾﺎ أَﯾﱡَﮭﺎ اﻟﱠِذﯾَن آَﻣﻧ ُوا ﻻَ ﺗ َﺗ ﱠِﺧذ ُوا اﻟﱠِذﯾَن اﺗ ﱠَﺧذ ُوا ِدﯾﻧَﻛُْم ھُُزًوا‬
‫ب ِﻣْن ﻗَْﺑِﻠﻛُْم َواْﻟﻛُﻔﱠﺎَر أَْوِﻟﯾَﺎَء‬ َ ‫َوَﻟِﻌﺑًﺎ ِﻣْن اﻟﱠِذﯾَن أ ُوﺗ ُوا اْﻟِﻛﺗ َﺎ‬
‫ إِْن ﻛُﻧﺗ ُْم ُﻣْؤِﻣﻧِﯾَن‬F َ ‫َواﺗ ﱠﻘ ُوا ا ﱠ‬
"O you who believe do not take as friends and
protectors those who take your Religion as mockery
and fun, from amongst those who received the
Scripture before you, nor from the idolaters; and fear
Allaah concerning this if you are truly Believers."
[5:57]

َ‫ﯾَﺎ أَﯾﱡَﮭﺎ اﻟﱠِذﯾَن آَﻣﻧ ُوا ﻻَ ﺗ َﺗ ﱠِﺧذ ُوا ﺑَِطﺎﻧَﺔً ِﻣْن د ُوﻧِﻛُْم ﻻ‬
ً‫ﯾَﺄ ْﻟ ُوﻧَﻛُْم َﺧﺑَﺎﻻ‬
"O you who believe do not take as friends and
protectors those outside your religion, since they will
not spare any effort in trying to corrupt you." [3:118]

:‫واﻟد ﱠﻟﯾُل ﻗَوﻟﮫُ ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬

‫_ َواْﻟَﯾْوِم اْﻵِﺧِر ﯾَُواد ﱡوَن َﻣْن َﺣﺎد ﱠ‬ ِ ‫ﻻ ﺗَِﺟد ُ ﻗَْوﻣﺎ ً ﯾُْؤِﻣﻧُوَن ِﺑﺎ‬
‫ﷲ َوَرﺳُوﻟَﮫُ َوَﻟْو َﻛﺎﻧُوا آﺑﺎءھُْم أ َْو أ َْﺑﻧﺎءھُْم أ َْو إِْﺧَواَﻧُﮭْم أ َْو‬ َ
ُ‫ب ﻓِﻲ ﻗ ُﻠُوِﺑِﮭُم ا ْ ِﻹﯾَﻣﺎَن َوأ َﯾﱠدَھُم ِﺑُروحٍ ِّﻣْﻧﮫ‬ َ َ‫ﺷﯾَرﺗَُﮭْم أ ُوﻟَﺋَك َﻛﺗ‬ ِ ‫ﻋ‬
َ
‫ت ﺗَْﺟِري ِﻣْن ﺗَْﺣِﺗَﮭﺎ اْﻷ َْﻧَﮭﺎُر َﺧﺎِﻟِدﯾَن ﻓِﯾَﮭﺎ‬ ٍ ‫َو ﯾُْدِﺧﻠُُﮭْم َﺟﻧﱠﺎ‬
َ ‫ﷲ أ َﻻ إِﱠن ِﺣْز‬
‫ب‬ ِ ‫ب‬ ُ ‫ﻋْﻧﮫُ أ ُوَﻟﺋَك ِﺣْز‬ َ ‫ﺿوا‬ ُ ‫ﻋْﻧُﮭْم َوَر‬ َ ُ‫ﻲ ﷲ‬ َ ‫َرِﺿ‬
‫ﷲ ھُُم اْﻟُﻣْﻔِﻠُﺣوَن‬ِ
And the proof for this is the saying of Allah Ta’ala:
You (O Muhammad ) will not find any people who
believe in Allah and the Last Day, making friendship
with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger
(Muhammad), even though they were their fathers or
their sons or their brothers or their kindred (people).
For such He has written Faith in their hearts, and
strengthened them with Rûh (proofs, light and true
guidance) from Himself. And He will admit them to
Gardens (Paradise) under which rivers flow to dwell
therein (forever). Allah is pleased with them, and they
with Him. They are the Party of Allah. Verily, it is the
Party of Allah that will be the successful. [Al-
Mujaadilah 58:22]

Allah clarified in this verse that two things are

never to exist in one place or at the same time

The belief in Allah and the Loving those who oppose Allah
Hereafter and His Messenger ‫ﷺ‬

Rewards Mentioned In The Ayah

Allah has written Faith in their hearts

He Has strengthened them with Ruh from Himself

Allah will admit them to Gardens under which rivers flow

to dwell therein forever

Allah is pleased with them

They are pleased with Him

They are the party of Allah

They will be successful

Explanation Of This Ayah By

Different Ulemaa’
So the foundation of the religion is that
whoever enters into Laa Ilaaha Illallah then:
o He loves this statement of tawheed
Sheikh Saalih o He loves the people of tawheed
ibn ‘Abdul o He hates shirk as it nullifies his statement
o He hates its people
‘Azeez’s
explanation It is obligatory for the believer to love Allah,
His Messenger and the believers, and there
should be no affection in his heart for the
disbelievers, even in worldly matters.

This ayah proves that having love for a

disbeliever negates faith in Allah and the
Last Day, either in its very origin or with Sheikh al-
regards to its completion. If love of them is Fawzaan’s
accompanied by supporting what they are explanation
upon and their kufr, then this counts as
leaving the fold of Islam.

Ibn ul-Qayyim said in Al-Kaafiyat-ush-Shaafiyah

‫أﺗﺣب أﻋداء اﻟﺣﺑﯾب وﺗدﻋﻲ ﺣﺑـــﺎ ﻟـــﮫ ﻣــﺎ ذاك ﺑﺈﻣﻛــﺎن‬
‫وﻛـذا ﺗﻌـﺎدي ﺟـﺎھدًا أﺣﺑﺎﺑـﮫ أﯾن اﻟﻣﺣﺑﺔ ﯾﺎ أﺧﺎ اﻟﺷﯾطﺎن‬
Do you love the enemies of the Beloved One and still claim,
That you love Him? That is not possible
And likewise you strive hard to oppose those He loves,

Ponder Over The Saying Of Allah

‫ﺳﻧَﺔ ٌ ﻓِﻲ ِإْﺑَراِھﯾَم َواﻟﱠِذﯾَن َﻣﻌَﮫ ُ ِإْذ ﻗَﺎﻟ ُوا ِﻟﻘَْوِﻣِﮭْم ِإﻧﱠﺎ ﺑ َُرآُء‬ َ ‫ﺳَوة ٌ َﺣ‬ ْ ُ ‫ﻗد َﻛﺎﻧَْت ﻟَﻛُْم أ‬
ُ ‫ َﻛﻔَْرﻧَﺎ ﺑِﻛُْم َوﺑَدَا ﺑَْﯾﻧَﻧَﺎ َوﺑَْﯾﻧَﻛُْم اْﻟﻌَدَاَوة‬e
ِ ‫ِﻣْﻧﻛُْم َوِﻣﱠﻣﺎ ﺗ َْﻌﺑ ُد ُوَن ِﻣْن د ُوِن ا ﱠ‬
‫ﺳﺗ َْﻐِﻔَرﱠن ﻟََك‬ْ َ ‫ َوْﺣدَهُ ِإﻻ ﱠ ﻗَْوَل ِإْﺑَراِھﯾَم ِﻷ َﺑِﯾِﮫ َﻷ‬e ِ ‫ﺿﺎُء أَﺑَدًا َﺣﺗ ﱠﻰ ﺗ ُْؤِﻣﻧ ُوا ﺑِﺎ ﱠ‬ َ ‫َواْﻟﺑَْﻐ‬
‫ﻋﻠَْﯾَك ﺗ ََوﱠﻛْﻠﻧَﺎ َوِإﻟَْﯾَك أَﻧَْﺑﻧَﺎ َوِإﻟَْﯾَك اْﻟَﻣِﺻﯾُر‬ َ ‫ﺷْﻲٍء َرﺑﱠﻧَﺎ‬ َ ‫ ِﻣْن‬e ِ ‫َوَﻣﺎ أَْﻣِﻠُك ﻟََك ِﻣْن ا ﱠ‬
"There is a fine example for you to follow in Ibrahim and those
with him when they said to their unbelieving people: 'We are free
of you and whatever idols you worship besides Allah, and we deny
and reject what you are upon; and because of your disbelief in
Allah and your worship of others besides Him, enmity and hatred
has arisen between us for ever, unless you believe truly in Allah,
and single Him out, and worship Him alone." [60:4]

The Third Treatise

َ َ‫ أن ﺗ َﻌﺑ ُد‬،‫أﱠن اﻟﺣﻧﯾﻔﯾﺔَ ِﻣﻠﺔَ إﺑراھﯾَم‬
ُ‫ﷲ َوْﺣدَه‬
،‫ُﻣْﺧِﻠﺻﺎ ً ﻟَﮫ ُ اﻟد ّﯾَن‬
That Al-Haneefiyyah, the religion of
Ibrahim, is that you worship Allah alone,
making the religion sincerely (i.e., solely)
for Him.

‫ُﻣْﺧِﻠﺻﺎ ً ﻟَﮫ ُ اﻟدّﯾن‬
‫ﺣﻧف‬
Meaning: Al Haneefiyyah is

Why Did Allah Refer This Religion

To Ibrahim Only When It Was The
Religion Of All Prophets?
Allah made Ibrahim an Imaam

Allah made him the finest example for those coming

after him- he called to Allah Alone in front of his people
and his father, smashing the idols.

Allah took out of his heart the love for anything else above
Allah.

He was devoted Allah to the point that he was ready to

sacrifice his own son for His sake.
And this is the wisdom for Allah referring haneefiyyah to
Ibrahim- after Allah tested him, his devotion to Allah
became the most apparent.

(‫اْﻟُﻣْﺷِرِﻛﯾَن‬

Translation:
120: Verily, Ibrâhim was an Ummah (a leader having all the
good righteous qualities), or a nation, obedient to Allah, Hanif
and he was not one of those who were Al-Mushrikûn
(polytheists, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh,
and those who joined partners with Allâh).
121: (He was) thankful for His (Allah’s) Favours. He (Allah)
chose him (as an intimate friend) and guided him to a Straight
Path (Islamic Monotheism)
122: And We gave him good in this world, and in the Hereafter
he shall be of the righteous.
123: Then, We have sent revelation to you (O Muhammad
saying): “Follow the religion of Ibrahim, Hanif (to worship none
but Allah) and he was not of the Mushrikun.

[٥٦ :‫]اﻟذارﯾﺎت‬
‫ ﯾ َُوِّﺣد ُوِن‬:‫َو َﻣْﻌﻧَﻰ ﯾَْﻌﺑ ُد ُوِن‬
As Allah says:
“And I did not create the Jinn and mankind
except to worship Me.” [51: 56]]
The meaning of “to worship Me” is “to single
Me out (in worship).”

Meaning: They worship me ‫ﯾَْﻌﺑ ُد ُوِن‬

‫ﯾ َُوِّﺣد ُوِن‬ Meaning: They single me out in worship

This means “Tawheed” and “Worship” have the same meaning.

So for the one who only affirms Tawheed-ur-Ruboobiyyah, then
he is not a muwahhid and he will not be from the people of
Paradise. This shows the importance of Tawheed Al-Uloohiyyah.

Directing Worship Towards Allah:

That you don’t direct your act of worship to other than Allah.
(if you pray- you direct your prayer to Allah and no one no
thing else. If you slaughter it is only to Allah and not
someone/something else. That is why Allah said in 6/162 which
means: Say: “Verily, my Salah, my sacrifice, my living, and my
dying are for Allah, the Lord of all that exists.”) and in 108/2
which means: Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and
sacrifice (to Him only). (Al-Kawthar 108:2)

Pleasing Only Allah:

That your intention behind that act of worship (which was
directed to only Allah), is only for pleasing Allah and nothing
else.

Tawheed (Monotheism)
‫ َوھَُو‬،ُ ‫ اﻟﺗ ﱠْوﺣﯾد‬:‫ظُم ﻣﺎ أ ََﻣَر ﷲُ ِﺑِﮫ‬
َ ‫َوأ َﻋ‬
.‫ﷲ ِﺑﺎْﻟِﻌﺑﺎدِة‬ِ ُ ‫ِإْﻓراد‬
The greatest thing that Allaah commanded
is Tawheed, which means: Singling Allaah
out in worship.

Definition of Tawheed

Islamically: To single out Allah

Linguistically: To single

Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) said: “Every time the
word ‘worship’ is used in the Qur’an it means Tawheed”, such as:
o Worship Allah: Single Him out with worship
o O people worship your Lord: O people single out your Lord

Shirk (Polytheism)
َ ‫َوأ َﻋَظُم ﻣﺎ ﻧﮭﻰ‬
ّ ِ ‫ اﻟ‬:ُ ‫ﻋْﻧﮫ‬
،‫ﺷْرُك‬
And the greatest thing that Allah warned
against is Shirk,

This is a tremendous point of benefit because some people

believe there are worst crimes, and do not give importance
to the matter of shirk and do not warn against it despite
seeing people fall into it. So the greatest of all sins is shirk,
because the person of shirk will never enter Paradise.

ُ ‫ُ َﻋﻠَۡﯾِﮫ ٱۡﻟَﺟﻧﱠﺔَ َوَﻣۡﺄَوٰﯨﮫ‬U‫ ﻓَﻘَۡد َﺣﱠرَم ٱﱠ‬U

ِ ‫ِإﻧﱠﮫ ُ ۥ َﻣن ﯾ ُۡﺷِرۡك ِﺑﭑ ﱠ‬
[ ٧٢ :‫ﺻﺎٍر ]اﻟﻣﺎﺋده‬ َ ‫ظٰـِﻠِﻣﯾَن ِﻣۡن أَﻧ‬ ‫ٱﻟﻧﱠﺎ ُ ۖر َوَﻣﺎ ِﻟﻠ ﱠ‬
Whoever makes shirk with Allah, then Allah
has made Paradise forbidden for him; and his
abode will be the Hellfire. And the
disbelieving wrongdoers will have no helper.
[5:72]

َ ‫ِإﱠن ٱ ﱠ‬
َ َ‫ذَٲِﻟَك ِﻟَﻣن ﯾ‬
‫ﺷﺎ ٓ ُۚء‬
Allah does not forgive that shirk be
committed with Him and He forgives
whatever is less than that to
whomsoever He wishes. [4:48]

‫ ِإن‬Nِ ‫ﺻُﻣوَن • ﺗ َﭑ ﱠ‬ ِ َ ‫أ َۡﺟَﻣﻌ ُوَن • َﻗﺎﻟ ُواْ َوھُۡم ِﻓﯾَﮩﺎ ﯾَۡﺧﺗ‬
• ‫ب ٱۡﻟﻌَٰـﻠَِﻣﯾَن‬ َ ُ ‫ﺿﻠَٰـٍ۟ل ﱡﻣِﺑﯾٍن • ِإۡذ ﻧ‬
ِ ّ ‫ﺳ ّ ِوﯾﻛُم ِﺑَر‬ َ ‫ﻛُﻧﱠﺎ ﻟَِﻔﻰ‬
{94. Then they will be thrown on their faces
into it (the Fire), they and the astray.} {95.
And all of the hosts of Iblis together.} {96.
They will say while contending therein,} {97.
"By Allah, we were truly in a manifest error,}
{98. "When we held you as equals with the
Lord of all that exists;'‘} Surah Shu’ara

‫ض َوَﺟﻌََل‬ َ ‫ت َوٱۡﻷ َۡر‬ ‫ ٱﻟﱠِذى َﺧﻠََق ٱﻟ ﱠ‬N

ِ ‫ﺳَﻣٰـَوٲ‬ ِ ‫ٱۡﻟَﺣ ۡﻣد ُ ِ ﱠ‬
‫ت َوٱﻟﻧﱡوَرۖ ﺛ ُﱠم ٱﻟﱠِذﯾَن َﻛَﻔُرواْ ِﺑَر ِﺑِّﮩۡم ﯾَۡﻌِدﻟ ُوَن‬
ِ ‫ظﻠ َُﻣٰـ‬ ‫ٱﻟ ﱡ‬
All praise be to Allah, Who created the heavens
and the earth, and originated the darkness and the
light, yet those who disbelieve hold others as
equal with their Lord

‫ﺷۡرَك ﻟَظُۡﻠٌم َﻋِظﯾٌ۟م‬

ّ ِ ‫ِإﱠن ٱﻟ‬
Shirk is the greatest zulm (wrongdoing) [31:13]

‫ َﻓَﻘِد ٱۡﻓﺗ ََر ٰ ٓى ِإۡﺛًﻣﺎ َﻋِظﯾًﻣﺎ‬N

ِ ‫َوَﻣن ﯾ ُۡﺷِرۡك ِﺑﭑ ﱠ‬
And whoever sets up partners with Allah in
worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous
sin. [4:48]

Which is supplicating to others along with

َ ُ ‫َوھَُو دَﻋَوة‬
ُ ‫ﻏْﯾِرِه َﻣﻌَﮫ‬
Which is supplicating to others along with ‫ا ﻟ ﺷر ك‬
Him. (This is another definition of shirk)

What is Da’wah?
Da’wah means Ibaadah (worshipping)
Da’wah and Du’aa are the same
‫ا ﻟ د ﻋوة‬

Types Of Du’aa’

Du’aa’ Ul Mas’alah Du’aa’ Ul Ibaadah

(Call Of Request) (Every act of Ibaadah)

Therefore if this word is mentioned in the Qur’an it is to be

taken by both meanings, because this term includes both
unless the sequence of the sentence pinpoints one of
them.

‫واﻟد ﱠﻟﯾُل َﻗوﻟﮫ ُ ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ‬

ً ‫ﺷْﯾﺋﺎ‬
َ ‫ﷲ َوﻻ ﺗ ُْﺷِرﻛُوا ِﺑِﮫ‬
َ ‫َواْﻋﺑ ُد ُوا‬
The proof for this is Allah’s statement: “And
worship Allah (alone) and do not mix
anything (in worship) with Him.” [Surah An-
Nisaa: 36]

How Does This Ayah Act As A

Proof?
Allah has mentioned 10 rights in this ayah, and
Allah began it with the command for tawheed
and prohibition for shirk. So this proves that the
greatest thing Allah has commanded is tawheed
and the worst thing He has forbidden is shirk,
because Allah does not begin except with the
most important thing and then what is the next
in importance, and shirk was mentioned together
with the greatest command as something
opposite it.
