Activity Title: Graphing a Circle on a Coordinate Plane

Learning Competency: Determines the center and radius of a circle given its equation and vice
versa. (M10GE-IIi-1)
Learning Target(s): Identify the coordinates of the center and the length of the radius of the
circle.
Performance Standard: Formulate and find solutions to challenging situations involving circles
and other related terms in different disciplines through appropriate
and accurate representations.

Drill: Multiplication table of 11

Identify the coordinates of the center and the length of the radius of the circle given:
Example: a) x2 + y2 = 9
Solution:
The equation can be written as (x – 0)2 + (y – 0)2 = 32. Thus, the center is at (0, 0) and
radius r = 3.
a) (x + 1)2 + (y – 2)2 = 12
Solution:
The equation is written in standard form as (x – (-1))2 + (y -2)2 = ( 12 )2 .Thus, the center
is at (-1, 2) and radius = 12 = 2 3.

b) x2 + y2 – 6x + 2y + 6 = 0
Solution:
We transformed the general form to standard form by the following procedure:
1) Isolate the constant term: x2 + y2 – 6x + 2y + 6 = 0
2) Group terms with the same variable: (x2 – 6x) + (y2 + 2y) = -6
3) Complete the square in each group, then apply the addition property of equality (APE).
(x2 -6x + 9) + (y2 + 2y + 1) = -6 + 9 + 1

Mathematics 10, page 79

4) Factor the perfect square trinomial (PST) as a square of binomials.
(x – 3)2 + (y +1)2 = 4
Thus, the center is at (3, -1) and the radius is 2.
Example:

Activity
A. Identify the coordinates of the center and the length of the radius of the circle.
Show its graph.
1) x2+ + y2 – 1 = 0

2) (x – 5)2 + (y + 4)2 = 10

3) x2 + y2 – 2x + y – 1 = 0
