QUESTION 1 (10 marks)
(a) The line that is parallel to y-axis and passes through the point (3,5, −4) can be described

using the set of equations _____________________________________. (1 mark)

(b) Given |𝐮| = 3 and 𝐮 has the same direction with the vector v = 2, 4, 5 . Rewrite the

vector 𝐮 as a product of its magnitude and direction. (3 marks)

(c) Given u = 3, 2, 0 and v = −1, 2, −4 . Compute 2u - v . (4 marks)

(d) Find the midpoint between the two points A ( 3, −2,3) and B (1, 4, −7 ) . (2 marks)

Given u = 3, −1, 7 and v = −2,5, 6 .

(a) Compute 𝐮 ∙ 𝐯. Then, determine if 𝐮 is perpendicular to 𝐯. (3 marks)

(b) Compute the angle between 𝐮 and 𝐯. (4 marks)

(c) Find the vector projection of 𝐮 onto 𝐯. (2 marks)

(d) Find a unit vector that is perpendicular to both 𝐮 and 𝐯. (6 marks)

Given a line L : r (t ) = 2, 0, −1 + t 2,1, −1 and a plane P : 3x + 3 y − z = 27.

(a) Find the intersection between the line 𝐿 and the plane 𝑃. (4 marks)

(b) Calculate the distance from the point 𝑆(2,0,1) to

(i) the line L : r (t ) = 2, 0, −1 + t 2,1, −1 , and


(ii) the intersection found in part (a).
Which one is point S nearer to? (11 marks)

Given a surface − x 2 − 2 y 2 + 4 z 2 = 16 .

(a) Rewrite the equation in its standard form. (1 mark)

(b) Identify/Name the surface. (1 mark)

(c) Sketch the surface and label all intercepts. (3 marks)

(d) The surface is shifted to a new location with its new equation

− x 2 − 2 y 2 + 4 z 2 + 2 x + 8 y + 8 z = 13 .
Find the new center of the surface. (5 marks)
