Perspective in Communication
INTRODUCTION
We all see the world with our own thinking which is known as our individual perceptions.
Our individual perceptions are in actual the filters through which we see, understand the
world. It is our view through which we handle a situation or a topic we want to communicate
about. We always do not see all the persons with same opinion or thinking. Our individual
thinking act as a "filter" through which we communicate with others. For example same
words can have different meaning depending upon how we interpret them. Perspectives
can be visual, due to different language due to feelings or it depends upon the environment
in which we work.
VISUAL PERCEPTION
Visual perception is the ability to see and to interpret the visual information. If perception
is inaccurate, in correct or altered in any way it leads to problem in reading, handwriting,
spelling etc. The visual perception involves the ability to organize and interpret the information
i.e. seen. It is very important because read- ing is not possible without adequate visual
perception. Without accurate visual perception one would have difficulty in learning to
read, follow directions, copy from the white board, would have problem in good eye hand
coordination.
The visual perception includes following things
1. Visual discrimination :It includes ability to notice differences like shape, size,
color etc.
2. Form discrimination:It includes differences in objects when they are in orientation.
3. Foreground Background differentiation: It includes focus on a selected target
and ignore out non-relevant images.
4. Visual memory: It is the ability to remembers letters and words and recognize
them quickly when seen again.
LANGUAGE
Language not only helps in communication but it shapes our perception. Language affects
the way in which its speaker expresses his words or influences other people. Various emotions
or feeling and experience can be influenced by the pattern of the language a person speaks.

The same words can have different meanings depending on how we interpret them.
For example read the following phrase -
1. P'ast experiences
Our past experience greatly affects our way of thinking. One sets his mind according
to one's past experiences. Past experiences acts as a filter through which we see a
particular situation. We have examples from our own time in a particular situation
which helps in decision making. For example if we have no past experience on a
particular topic then we are in a clear state, information wise. Our communication is
affected by our part experience. We enter a situation, a mecting or a conversation
with certain expectations of what will happen in that situation and we behave
accordingly.
Sometimes, we want our past experience to infuence our future communication.
For example, when our team responded positively to the sale tactics we put in place
then some tactics can be followed again and again. But when our negative past
experience alters our communication and our full potential than we should be aware
of it. For example, when your boss ignored your idea in the last meeting then you
do not bring up another idea that could have made an impact. When you got nervous
at time you gave a presentation then you start out even more nervous on your next
presentation. So, past experiences can be positive or negative and affects our
perception.
2. Prejudices
It is usually unfavorable felings toward people or a person because of their gender,
values, age, religion, occupation, language, education or other personal
characteristics. We all have prejudices. It occurs due to our past experiences with a
person and we start thinking that the same type of experience will happen with all
the persons who are like the first one. Prejudices involve both positive and negative
characteristics. The problem occurs when prejudices start affecting how or whom
we communicate. This generally occurs at workplace. Prejudices occurs when we
take a single experiernce with one type of person and then act as if all
people of the
same type in future will result in the same experience. By doing this we eliminate

their indivIduaity. reudices greatly limit the chances of communicatin being
successful or producing the desired result.
We should see each person as an individual that is separate from any perception we
might have about them. Certain questions arises due to prejudices are-
