- INTRODUCTION -
Moxibustion is a form of therapy that entails the burning of mugwort leaves. This is a small, spongy
herb that is believed to enhance healing with acupuncture. As such, the leaves are burnt close to the
skin's surface using a stick to apply heat.The practice is derived from Chinese medicine.
There are several methods of moxibustion. Three of them are direct scarring, direct non-scarring, and
indirect moxibustion.

Direct scarring moxibustion which places a small cone of moxa on the skin at an acupuncture
point and burns it until the skin blisters, which then scars after it heals.
This method is typically applied in clients who have asthma and chronic digestive disease

Next picture is an example of Direct non-scarring moxibustion. The moxa is placed on the point
and lit, but is extinguished or removed before it burns the skin.

This picture is now an example of Indirect moxibusion. In this method the practitioner lights one
end of a moxa stick and holds it close to the treatment area for a few minutes until the area
turns red.
Another form of indirect is that it uses both acupuncture needles and moxa. A needle is inserted
into an acupoint and retained.
