- INTRODUCTION -
Moxibustion is a form of therapy that entails the burning of mugwort leaves. This is a small, spongy
herb that is believed to enhance healing with acupuncture. As such, the leaves are burnt close to the
skin's surface using a stick to apply heat.‌The practice is derived from Chinese medicine.

There are several methods of moxibustion. Three of them are direct scarring, direct non-scarring, and
indirect moxibustion.

 Direct scarring moxibustion which places a small cone of moxa on the skin at an acupuncture
point and burns it until the skin blisters, which then scars after it heals.
 This method is typically applied in clients who have asthma and chronic digestive disease

 Next picture is an example of Direct non-scarring moxibustion. The moxa is placed on the point
and lit, but is extinguished or removed before it burns the skin.
 This method is typically applied with clients who have chronic deficiency of coldness

 This picture is now an example of Indirect moxibusion. In this method the practitioner lights one
end of a moxa stick and holds it close to the treatment area for a few minutes until the area
turns red.
 Another form of indirect is that it uses both acupuncture needles and moxa. A needle is inserted
into an acupoint and retained.

- BENEFITS OF THE THERAPY -


In general, this stimulates blood circulation and triggers the body’s natural healing response. A skilled
acupuncturist can target specific points on the body and apply the heat from moxibustion to bring
about a biochemical response. In addition, warming certain points with the slow heat from the
burning moxa produces a heat that can treat sore muscles. Specific health benefits of moxibustion can
include:

 Expelling cold and dampness from the body


 Relieves back pain and pain from arthritis and menstrual camping
 Improving female health issues such as menstrual irregularity, infertility, and breech pregnancy
 Relieving male health problems such as impotence and poor sperm quality
 Increasing resistance to cold and flu; this is especially helpful for patients who tend to frequently
suffer from contagious viruses that circulate in winter
 Stimulating the immune system to fight more serious illnesses
 Regulating the digestive system to relieve constipation and chronic diarrhea
 Reducing numbness in the fingers and toes
 Reducing the risk of developing blood clots
 Easing anxiety disorders and certain symptoms of depression
 Eliminate general fatigue, leading to increased energy throughout the day
