Extension cords are very useful at home since they give additional power outlets where
they are needed. They also allow you to move more freely with the gadget instead of being
confined near the main power source.

Aside from constructing an extension cord, here are some of the suggested electrical
gadgets that you can try. You can research on how to do these with the help of your parents or
older siblings.
• Lampshade – is a gadget used to soften the light and as a decoration lamp and inside
the room.
• Bulb Tester – is used in testing an incandescent bulb, starter, or ballast.
• Doorbell – is a bell or buzzer outside a door that is rung to announce the presence of a
visitor.

Activity#1. Equip yourself!

Direction: Now, study the table below. Read and analyze the different tools and materials used
in constructing simple electrical gadgets, Find these tools, and ask your parents how to use it
properly. Remember that these tools should be used with caution!

Male plug (round) and 2 or 3-gang convenience outlet
Hand tools (screwdriver, pliers, wire stripper or utility knife, and multimeter tester-optional)
Procedure:

1. Take one end of your electrical wire and slice through the outer covering to reveal
thinner wires about 2 centimeters. Be careful when peeling off the covering so you do
not damage the individual wires inside. Separate the wire about 8 cm. from the exposed
wire to create two different wires that will be connected to the plug. Do the same on the
other end of the wire.

2 cm.

8 cm.

2. Get the male plug. Remove the cover. Using the

screwdriver, remove the two larger screws on each of the
terminals. Insert the electrical wire in the hole of the plug.

3. After you inserted the wire, create a loop with an Underwriter’s Knot.

4. Split each end of the wire and twist the exposed wires to the screws. Push the knot
down to the middle of the plug. Reconnect and tighten the screws down to hold the wires
securely. Use your pliers to make sure that the two wires will not touch with each other.
Put back the cover of the plug so the wires will not be exposed.

You’re done with the male plug! Now, let’s proceed to the other end of the wire. Do you think
you can connect it to the convenience outlet or the female plug? Let us proceed.

5. Get the convenience outlet. Remove the

screw to open it. Loosen (do not remove) the two
screws inside the outlet.

5. Create another underwriter’s knot. Split both ends of the exposed wire. Connect each
wire by twisting it to the screw. Tighten the screw using your screwdriver. You may use
the plier to keep the exposed strand of wire in place. Adjust the knot in the proper
position.

TLE 6 – Industrial Arts

Quarter 4 -Week 6 6
7. Replace the cover and secure it with the screws.
8. If you have available multimeter tester, you may do the “continuity test”. Don’t forget
to ask for help in doing this. If you have no multi-meter tester, proceed to number 9.
9. Let your teacher or any qualified person in your community inspect the wire connections
inside the male plug and the convenience outlet to see if it is secured and it is safe to use. The
positive and negative wire should not be touching with each other.
(Reminder: Do not plug it to an electrical outlet unless it’s validated to be safe and
with the guidance of your parent’s or guardian).
