Gamelan
Gamelan refers to the instruments that make up one of two types of ensembles: Javanese
gamelan and Balinese gamelan. Gamelan instruments, including various metallophones,
xylophones, gongs, bells, stringed instruments, and drums adhere to either the slendro or
pelog scales, which are microtonal in nature.
Gamelan is often an accompanying music to other art forms Indonesian dance or Indonesian
puppet-acting. Both the music and the dance serve to recount religious or folkloric narratives,
depending on the region. Balinese gamelan is often used as religious music, as the Hindu
narratives told in Balinese dance and gamelan are reflective of the Hindu-majority population
that lives in the island of Bali. Javanese gamelan is often more recreational in its cultural
significance, as the majority-Muslim performers often have little personal association with the
Hindu narratives. All dances associated with gamelan music are very specifically gestured,
with all body movements adding narrative elements to the overall story. Similarly, traditional
puppet shows, called Wayang, also use gamelan music in accompaniment, re-enacting similar
stories to the dances.
All gamelan music is taught through a mostly un-notated, oral tradition. However, a few
systems exist that notate the melodic and/or rhythmic elements in gamelan music.
ELEMENTS
This sec%on is important for developing performance and experimen%ng contexts! Highlight
those elements most prominent in each form.
Elements Gamelan
Melody/Pitch The central melody of a song in gamelan music is called the balungan. A few
instruments play the balungan, while the rest of the ensemble play supporting
elements such as embellishments and layering.

Tuning systems Most gamelan uses one of two scales: the heptatonic pelog or the pentatonic
slendro. In comparison to western equal-tempered scales, pelog and slendro
are microtonal, using intervals that can be both greater than or less than a
semitone or whole tone. Each scale has variants, and all pitched instruments
are tuned to either scale.
Meter Most gamelan follows cyclical patterns of 16 or 32 beats. Gamelan uses a
rhythmic structure called coloctomy, which denotes a rhythmic phrase
characterized by a specific sequence of different instruments.
Harmony Gamelan music does not use an intentional harmonic language. Because the
music is heterophonic, non functional harmonies are sometimes derived from
simultaneous playing of variations of a melody which forms intervals.
Oral/Written Some numerical notation exists for teaching purposes, most gamelan music is
taught through an oral tradition.
