Random Access Memory (RAM)

INPUT PROCESS

INPUT
Input is the data you entered into the computer using input devices for
processing.
PROCESS
Inside the computer system unit are the processor, random access memory
(RAM) or often called as memory, and the hard disk.
Memory is closely associated with the processor. As you entered the data, the
memory temporarily holds it before and after it is processed. Memory
temporarily holds the data because once you shut down the computer, all the
data, information, and instructions also are gone. Memory also holds the
programs needed by the memory. Programs are loaded once the operating
system is loaded after you opened the computer.

The data from memory is now loaded to the Central Processing Unit
(CPU) also known as the processor. The processor performs the operation that
converts the data into information. Data can be a letter, symbols, numbers,
images, and perhaps no meaning to the users. In the school scenario, data can be
students’ quizzes, exam scores, project grades, which later combined and
processed by the computer becomes a final grade which is considered as
information. After processing, the result is forwarded back to memory for
temporary storage.

Using the save command from your application software, you can store the
information to other storage devices like hard disk, flash drive, and external hard
disk for a long time which you can access later for further manipulation.

OUTPUT
The Output is the result produced by the processor. The output is usable
information and it can be in the form of numbers, words, graphs, charts.
As you enter the data or after the data has been processed, you will see the result
through a computer monitor, which is considered as the primary output device.
The computer waits for the user to enter data. This data will be used by the
computer to process and later produce an output. Data can be in the form of text,
numbers, audio, images, and video, therefore different input devices are needed
to accept data to be processed.
A. Input Devices
Users’ need devices to conveniently enter data into the computer. Here are some
of the common input devices.

Keyboard is a primary input device used with a

computer. It is composed of different buttons with a
specific function, letters, numbers, and symbols.

Mouse is a device that controls the movement of the

cursor or pointer on a display screen.

Touch Screen is a computer screen that can be used by

touching it with a finger or a stylus pen to interact with
a computer.

hardware. Each application software has its specific function so determining the
appropriate software to be used based on the tasks to be done is necessary.
Some of the common application software used:
Word Processor - is software that allows users to create, edit, and print
documents. Examples: MS Word, Libre Office Writer, Open Office
Writer
Spreadsheet - An electronic document in which data is arranged in the rows and
columns of a grid and can be manipulated and used in calculations.
Examples: MS Excel, Libre Office Calc, Google Sheets
Database Software - is an organized collection of data, generally stored and
accessed electronically from a computer system.
Examples: MS Access, MySQL, Oracle

Presentation Software - these are programs that allow users to create an

electronic presentation for reports and other functions in the form of slides.
Examples: MS Powerpoint, Prezi, Zoho Show
Desktop Publishing Software - allows the user to manage visual content,
including page layout and design to produce various materials, such as books,
pamphlets, reports, and booklets.
Examples: MS Publisher, Adobe InDesign, QuarkPress
Graphics Software - these allow the creation and manipulation of graphics,
images, objects, and pictures.
Examples: CorelDraw, Photoshop, and Computer Aided Design (CAD)
Educational Software- these include tutorials and electronic lessons that give
students knowledge or training in a particular subject or skill, such as Math or
Science or in gardening or cooking.

C. Computer Storage Devices

A computer needs storage devices before and after processing the data to
store information and access later.

Volatile Storage Device – means that all the data are gone in the absence of
electricity.
Example: RAM

Non-Volatile Storage Device –means that all the data remains in the storage
even in the absence of electricity.
Examples: hard disk, flash drive, CD, DVD, memory stick, SD
card

Primary Storage Device – example: RAM

Secondary Storage Devices – examples: hard disk, CD, DVD, flash drive

Computer Storage Devices can be:

• Fixed Storage Devices – devices that are attached inside the

computer unit.
• Referred to as a primary storage device, this is where the
instructions and results of processing are stored. You
must use the save command of the application to save
your work in a secondary device such as a hard disk.
• Storage capacity is measured by Gigabytes
(GB).
Example: 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB
RAM)

• Removable Storage Devices – devices that can be detached

after use.

Flash Drive

• CD – Compact Disc, 700 Megabytes (MB) in capacity

• DVD – Digital Video Disc, 4.7 Gigabytes (GB)
capacity for single-side, 8.5 GB for singlesided, double-
layer.
• It is good storage for photos, video or data
• The computer must have CD-ROM or DVDROM to
access the information.
• You need a DVD Writer device to store your files in
blank CD or DVD

CD or DVD

External hard Disk

• Cloud Storage – some websites offer free storage to users.

They just need to sign up before they can avail this free storage.
Other Storage Device

Shared Network Drive – is a location in another computer where other

users from other computers are allowed to save and access information.

Ways to Access Information in Computer Stored in a

Computer

Method 1. Manually locate the file.

This method is applicable whether your file is stored in a hard

disk, flash drive, network drive, CD/DVD, or portable external
hard disk.

1. Use shortcut key Window + E to launch windows explorer.

Window + E means to press and hold down first Window
key (do not release), followed by letter E key then release
both keys.
Note: Window key is a key in your keyboard with this logo

Drive C
Drive

Point your mouse and double click to the drive (drive C,

example) where you store your file.

Double click again the folder where your file is located.

Once you found your file, double click the mouse to open it.

Method 2. Using the Search box.

(This method is applicable also in storage devices mentioned in Method

1.)

Your computer has a “Search” feature where you can type at least part
of the filename of your file, then the computer will find it for you.

1. Use shortcut key Window + E to launch windows explorer.

2. Open the drive letter
3. On the upper right corner of the window, you will find the
search box.
Drive C

Drive D

Enter the filename you want to search in the search box and press enter.

4. A list of files will be displayed as a result of a search. Select

your file and double click to open it.

Produce Output/Data Using Computer System

The computer output device converts information into a human-readable form.

But even without an output device, the computer can continue to function,
however, how will you know that what you are doing has no errors? Can you
imagine the scenario if you detach the monitor?
Example of Output Devices
Computer Display Monitor- An output device that displays information in
visual form, using text, and graphics and considered as a
primary output device.
Types of Monitor
a. CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) Monitor – is a type of
monitor that is a vacuum tube that contains one or
more electron guns and a phosphorescent screen and
is used to display images.

b. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Monitor – is a type of

monitor in which the technology has been used in
laptops for some time. It has recently been made
commercially available as monitors for desktop PCs.

c. LED (Light Emitting Diode) Monitor - is a type of

monitor in which technology was used in almost every
electrical and electronic product on the market, from a
tiny on/off the light to digital readouts, flashlights,
traffic lights, and perimeter lighting.

2. LCD Projector- utilize two sheets of polarizing material

with a liquid crystal solution between them. An electric
current passed through the liquid causes the crystals to
align so that light cannot pass through them.

3. Smart Board - A type of display screen that has a touch-

sensitive transparent panel covering the screen, which is
similar to a touch screen.

4. Printer – an output device that prints graphics or

text on paper.

Types of Printer
a. Ink-Jet or Bubble-Jet Printer - sprays ink at a
sheet of paper.
Ink-jet printers produce high-quality text and graphics.

b. Laser Printer - Uses the same technology as copy machines. Laser printers
produce very high-quality text and graphics.

b. LCD and LED Printer- Similar to a laser printer,

but uses liquid crystals or light-emitting diodes
rather than a laser to produce an image on the
drum.

c. Line Printer - Contains a chain of characters or

pins that print an entire line at one time. Line
printers are very fast but produce a low-quality
print.

d. Thermal Printer- An inexpensive printer that

works by pushing heated pins against heat-
sensitive paper. Thermal printers are widely used
in calculators and fax machines.

5. Speaker - Used to play sound. They may be built into

the system unit or connected with cables. Speakers allow
you to listen to music and hear sound effects from your
computer.

6. Headphones a pair of small loudspeaker drivers worn on or around the head

over a user's ears. They are electroacoustic transducers, which convert an
electrical signal to a corresponding sound.

Printing Data Procedures

Check the printer.
Check printer USB cable if connected in the USB port on your computer.
Connect the power cable to the electrical outlet.
Put a paper in printers’ paper tray.
1. Turn on the printer.
2. Locate the file you want to print. Your file may be in a hard disk, flash
