1 Application
The IRG 2000 combines prove, up-to-date digital technology in one compact
Instrument. For the first time the measurement process has been automated utilising the
instruments microprocessor - based intelligence. A pre programmed measurement sequence
automatically sets all parameters for the selected measurement. The operator is presented
with a complete analysis of the trace. Manual set up of measurement parameters is also
possible. The trace and all relevant data can be plotted via RS 232 on a PC connected
printer. Upload of data is also possible using the RS 232 interface and IRG 3000 replay
software.
With 60V output pulse and a transient recorder the IRG 2000 is capable of performing the

2 Using the device
2.1 Important notices
Before placing the instrument in service please observe the following precautions:
The unit should only be operated by trained and authorised personnel in accordance with
local safety regulations. All repairs and calibration of the instrument are only to be carried out
by our service department or an authorised BAUR agent.
The user is responsible for the correct operation of the instrument. The operation of the
instrument may involve measurements on energized low voltage cables. All local safety
regulations concerning work on live equipment must be observed. The supply lead of the
instrument must only be inserted in a socket outlet provided with a protective earth contact.
The continuity of the earth conductor between socket and instrument must be assured at all
times.
Additional in case of connecting the device to high voltage couplings a earth connection via
the shield of a BNC socket (Decay, ICM or Trigger Input) has to be done. Any interruption of
the protective ground conductor outside or inside the instrument will result in a potential
shock hazard. Intentional interruption is prohibited.
This instrument is capable of delivering a lethal electric shock in particular when used in
conjunction with other high voltage sources. Under no circumstances should users touch any
cables connected to the instrument unless they are satisfied that no dangerous voltage is
present. All safety regulations regarding the testing of cables must be observed.
Whenever a fault of the instrument is suspected the IRG 2000 is to be switched off
immediately. Ensure that the unit cannot be inadvertently switched back on and arrange
servicing of the instrument.

2.2.1 Select measuring methods
The measuring methods and their applications are described in following chapter.
• Press "MENU" key : The menu options are listed, with the "MODE" option on top,
selected by default (orange background).
• Click to confirm choice : the four measuring methods are listed vertically or
horizontally
• Move the selector (orange background) on the measuring method you wish to use by
rolling the knob so the selector jumps up or down to the next method on the list.
• Click to confirm your choice : the "Mode" list window disappears, leaving only the
"MENU" displayed and available for selection of other menu options. Note: the
"Mode" indicator in the upper status bar is now updated following the new selection.
14
2.2.2 Basic toolbar function
The following basic settings can be set directly in the default toolbar:
Range:
Corresponds to the length of the cable to be measured and sets the width of the screen, at
scale 1:1 (varies with Velocity value). To change the Range setting, select the Range
indicator, click to activate function, roll the knob to go through the Range values available
and then click to confirm choice and go back to the function selection mode.
Scroll/Zoom:
This button swaps from Scroll to Zoom, so that the user can position the view area on the
right location on the curve, with the right zoom. This option is activated by default after a
measurement has been performed. To exit click the back button.
Gain:
Sets the amplification factor, to control the amplitude of the signal displayed, so that the
echogram fits in the IRG2000 main screen. It can be adjusted the same way as for the
preceding functions. The gain is adjustable from 0dB to 60dB (in 1 dB increments).
Velocity:
The propagation velocity is the conversion factor from the time (µs) to the unit of length (m)
and can be set the same way as for the range function. The default value is v/2 = 80m/µs
(Decay method counted in v/4 default 40m/µs). This setting range goes from 50 to 150m/µs.
Incremental steps of 1m/µs by pressing knob once (green background), pressing knob
second time steps switching to 0.1m/µs (orange background), third time fix the adjusted
value.
Select cursor by pressing knob (green) – move cursor. Pressing knob second time (orange)
– cursor movement switches to fine pitch. Third pressing fix cursor at position.
15
2.2.4 Function toolbar
Press FUNCTION key to control the echogram representation via function toolbar.
Line:
Controls display of the actual measuring echogram
REF:
Controls display of the stored reference echogram, e.g. from the last measuring
File #:
Controls display of the stored file selected with the command "Open"
Window:
Switches between "Single" and "MULTI" window mode. Number of windows displayed
depends on how many of the three display controls are activated. Also note that in multi
window mode, the Zoom function affects the active window (red frame).
Set REF
Stores temporarily the active echogram as a reference signal
Open
Recalls the selected echogram in the stored files. Only working if echograms with exactly
same settings are saved. Otherwise use file viewer in menu to open any file.
Save
Saves the selected echogram in the files memory, with date, settings and cursors. When you
select the "Save" function, a window appears, showing the information that is automatically
associated with the file.
Print
Allows the user to print the active window's content along with its settings, through a
standard Windows print pop-up window. Need to connect the device via RS 232, and start of
IRG 2000 print software at connected PC, first.
16
2.2.5 Comparison / difference of measurements
Press the COMPARE key to get access to the compare toolbar.
Insert REF:
Inserts the REF signal inside the "Line" window
DIFF:
Allows to merge both Line and REF curves together, to obtain one resulting curve.
SHIFT:
Allows to move the added REF file horizontally and vertically, in the Line window. Only
available in TDR and SIM mode.
For comparing copy the REF curve into the LINE window for comparison purpose. This
command can only be issued when the LINE window is active. The REF echogram doesn't
necessarily have to be displayed.
Note: when the display is in single window mode, the "Insert REF" command disables the
"REF" display, as it would hide the duplicated Ref curve to be combined with the "Line"
curve. In multiple window mode, the REF window stays there, as this can't cause any
confusion.
The DIFF command allows you to merge both LINE and REF together in the LINE window, to
obtain a resulting curve. To perform that operation, you must have a reference set, then get
this reference inserted in the LINE window and the LINE window active.
• Activate LINE window by placing the selection frame over the window button and
click.
• Place the reference frame over the "DIFF" button and click: you can see now that
both echograms that were into the LINE window are merged in one curve, thus giving
a resulting curve. This curve keeps the "Line" colour. The tag of the Merging button
now shows: "SPLIT".
17
To separate curves that were merged with "DIFF" command:
• Activate the LINE window by position the selection frame over the LINE button and
click.
• Position the selection frame over the "DIFF" button and click to disable it. The LINE
display now shows both LINE and REF curves again.
The curves can be merged and separated as many times as the user needs it, by clicking on
the "DIFF" button. When a merged echogram is saved, it is saved with both curves, so to get
the resulting echogram, activate the File window and perform "DIFF" function as you do it for
line.
Take care all three measurements need to be done with same settings (gain, pulse height,
pulse width…).
18
2.3 Measurement methods
All measurements are started by pressing knob for two seconds.
For help read user manual and following instructions displayed in the status.
2.3.1 TDR
Without any couplings the IRG 2000 is used as a Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR). This
method allows the indication of short cuts, interruptions as well as the indication of cable
ends.
LINE socket is connected to the cable to be measured. The device is switched to TDR. All
possible settings to AUTO. Measurement is started by pressing knob for 2 seconds.
Range and Gain are adjusted automatically. Automatic cursor setting indicates the position of
fault or cable end. If adjustment is required, click the cursor key and select cursor by
pressing knob. Adjust by rolling knob.
19
2.3.2 TDR voltage proof / not voltage proof
By default the device is voltage proof. TDR measurements on live cables up to 400V
(50/60Hz) are possible. It may be necessary to switch to the not voltage proof mode to get
more accurate results.
Attention: Do not measure on live cables in the “not voltage proof” mode. Connection
to live cables only via measuring line with fuse.
20
2.3.5 SIM / MIM
For SIM and MIM (advanced SIM, included in ranges over 1024m at 80m/µs) measurements
a BNC connection to the SA 32 coupling unit is required.
Principle:
The first measurement is done with positive reflection of the cable end. After this the IRG
2000 is waiting for a High Voltage trigger impulse coming from surge generator SSG. This
trigger releases a secondary measurement that is reflected by the fault negatively.
21
2.3.6 ICM
For ICM measurement a BNC connection to the SK1D coupling unit is required.
Range must be set at least to the double of cable length.
Principle:
High Voltage impulses are discharged into the cable. It ignites an arc at the fault position.
The created transient waves are recorded by the IRG 2000. The distance between two peaks
indicates the distance to the fault.
782.4 m
22
2.3.7 Decay
For Decay measurement a BNC connection to the CC1 coupling unit is required.
Range must be set to four times of cable length.
Principle:
DC High Voltage is sent to the cable. It ignites an arc at the fault position. The created
transient waves are recorded by the IRG 2000. The distance between two peaks indicates
the distance to the fault.
991.2 m
