1.0 MAIN ISSUE

Teachers are those who would go beyond miles for their career. Being a teacher means
you are willing to sacrifice most of your time, money and energy to ensure that children
under your care are properly taken care of at school, and some other times, it could be
beyond the school context too. We could all agree that the teaching profession is one of
the most noble jobs in the world because the educators hold the responsibility to shape the
future generation. It all started from the educational institutions. Hence, it would be the
most right for teachers to be morally equipped and portray the highest level of good
behavioral conducts as they are the role models of the community, especially the children.
Excellent teachers are those individuals who the people always look up to and refer to
whenever situation requires. In school, teachers are the ones who give life to the pupils or
students because through them, the students may see the light they never thought they
needed. Therefore, it is by utmost right for every individual who would like to become a
teacher to possess all the positive moral conducts so that they could help their students
and be the inspiration to them. However, we could not also deny that teachers are humans
too. They prone to making mistakes and overlook certain matters which eventually lead to
other problems to the school or community in general. Ethical issues among the teachers
are commonly discussed matters in education field. Different professions have came out
with their own codes of ethics (Gorlin, 2000). These codes, usually drawn from
philosophical principles, function as a guidance for those in that profession and served as
a tool to making judgments by the professionals. Professionalism is the level of
competency and accountability of the professionals in their respective fields. As an
educator, professionalism is when one portrays their skills to have moral sensitivity,
judgment and motivation to manage themselves at their workplace. The competence and
common courtesy are among other components expected from an educator who has been
trained to deliver the job professionally. Boyt, Lusch and Naylor (2001) explains the
concept of professionalism as a multi-dimensional structure consisting of one’s attitudes
and behaviours towards his/her job and it refers to the achievement of high level standards.
It is also possible to define professionalism as a various dimensional structure including
one’s work behaviours and attitudes to perform the highest standards and improve the
service quality.
2.0 RESEARCH PROBLEM

A teacher’s first moral obligation is to provide excellent instruction. Teachers with a high
level of moral professionalism have a deep obligation to help students learn. In any
professions, the employers expect for their workers to have basic understandings and
practice of ethical behaviours at the workplace. In the context of education field, it gives
more reasons and focus for the teachers to show great ethical conducts as they are the
torchbearers who teach about knowledge and life to the students. There core of teaching
consists of the elements of integrity including truthfulness, dignity, fairness and non-
judgmental. Unfortunately, to err is human and there are cases whereby teachers
happened to probably ignore, misunderstand or decide to be ignorant on the importance
of having ethical behaviours at their workplace. This matter does not only affect them
professionally, but it also breaks and influences the relationship of them with their
employers and colleagues. In the long run, if these cases are not solved appropriately and
through the right channels, it will gradually stay within the teaching community. Educators
will start to pay less attention to the issue and finally sweep it under the rugs. Those who
get affected will suffer and will have to stay in the lump for years. Meanwhile, teachers are
always accountable on each action that he/she does. In both teaching and learning journey,
teachers’ accountability, according to Knight (2013) and Sacks (2009), is considered as
one of the most significant factors that mould the teachers’ competencies. Accountable
teachers focus on their students’ academic success, emotional well-being and balance life.
In fact, they would also take into consideration on their relationships with the school, other
colleagues, parents and the community as well as with their own selves and the nation as
a whole.

3.0 RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

This small-scale case study is conducted in a primary school located in Felda Sening, Kota
Tinggi, Johor, with the objectives to:

• observe teachers’ ethical issues in school

• identify possible actions to be taken to help solve the issues
4.0 PARTICIPANTS

The target participants of this study are the teachers and administrators of the school
consisting of 26 individuals with different backgrounds and races. Their age ranges
between 59 to 24 years old with 9 of them are male teachers, while 17 are female teachers.

5.0 FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION – INTERVIEW

An interview was conducted with the senior assistant teacher at the school to discuss and
further ask about the issue of ethics among the teachers in school. Based on the interview,
there were few issues on teachers’ ethics being mentioned. This study focuses on two
main issues, among others are teachers recklessly take leaves and have part time jobs.
The senior assistant teacher has served the school for more than 20 years, and she has
witnessed loads number of teachers with plenty other issues. According to her, every year,
out of the overall total number of teachers at the school, there would be 3 to 4 of them who
would continuously take sudden leaves and be absent from school. This issue has taken
a toll on other teachers whereby they also have many teaching hours. Aside from having
to attend their classes, they need to cover those absent teachers and spare their time in
classes whereas, they could use those time to complete other administrative tasks or
marking students’ workbooks or works in general. She also mentioned that teachers who
frequently took leaves from school would have his/her classes being left behind as
compared to other classes. Observing from this issue, it eventually will add more burden
to those absent teachers to catch up with the syllabus and making sure that the students
are not missing out. However, this does not lessen some other good qualities possess by
these teachers, as mentioned by the senior assistant teacher.

On the other hand, it has also been understood from the interview that there are some
teachers who would have side jobs or part time jobs while they are at it being a teacher.
Most of the teachers who do part time jobs or business would normally avoid from doing
businesses during school hours. Nonetheless, there are few of them who would go for it
whenever they have extra time or free from classes. This matter slowly becomes the talk
of the town among other colleagues, and she informed that the teachers who focus more
on their side businesses will sometimes lost count of their works and missed their classes.

Ability to make correct but non - detailed self - assessments (effectiveness, strengths, weaknesses,
improvements) based on a reflection format.
Able to build meaningful new knowledge and apply it in the context of its environment.
This should not be the case for a professional, as they are trained to be competent and are
expected to show professionalism and polite behavior while they are at work, regardless
of any reasons. For as long as they are committed to the job, they should not be prioritizing
on other jobs, and ignoring their main responsibilities as teachers. As lined by Ministry of
Education (MOE), based on Standard Guru Malaysia 2.0, there are 4 components under
teacher’s accountability which include the accountability on pupils, profession, parents,
towards the community and nation. Thus, it is the responsibility of every teacher in Malaysia
to work in line with has been ruled by the authority, in order to become the professionals
with the rightful ethics and showing excellent competency at work.

6.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

After the observation and extracting the details from the interview, it is highly recommended
for every person who has the intention to join the professional community to adhere to the
rules and conducts provided by the authorities and employers involved. Our willingness to
obey the rules and be professional is one step towards the positive development in our
profession. Teachers should be able to understand and instill the spirit from Etika Profesion
Perguruan and the Work Ethics of Ministry of Education in order to maintain the
professionalism and responsible behavior in each action. In the context of the school, it is
encouraged for the teachers to stay focus on their integrity and ensure that all their main
tasks as teachers are fulfilled, and the students’ academic are progressing well. On top of
that, the teachers also should be able to maintain healthy relationship with other colleagues
to produce positive working environment which in the long run would help the school and
the community to increase their level of productivity and competency altogether. When
teachers, school administrators, students and parents play their roles, accordingly, building
a developed nation is not something beyond reachable.

To study further on this issue, it is advisable to observe and analyze the issues faced by
the teachers in dealing with the global changes and how ethics of teachers are rationalizing
us in going through the difficult situations.
7.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, teachers are accountable individuals which are tied to the code of ethics and
conducts by the authority. Being in the world of professional and working directly with
people require us to uphold to the principle and good work ethics to ensure that teaching
profession would always be seen as one of the most noble and respected professions
among the society.
