Lecture 1
Teaching Profession & the Basic
Qualities of a Professional
Teacher.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lecture students can:
1.Define teaching profession.
2.Discuss the basic qualities of a professional
teacher.
What is Teaching?
 ‘Teaching is a process of transmitting
acquired KSV by the teacher to the learner
so that they are transformed into better
citizens by sharing these KSV with the
society in which they are brought up’
(Robinson 1980:168).
 It is a process by which KSV are transmitted,
skills developed & attitudes shaped.
 It involves a dual process, which requires an
interaction between the teacher and the
learner using the curriculum.

LEARNERS
What is Teaching?
 Teaching does not only impart KSV but forms
the pupils’ characters in all aspects of a
human (Farrant, 1980 & Robinson, 1980).
 Students do not learn from teaching alone
but from the teachers’ conduct as well.
 Therefore, teachers must have an excellent
character because they will serve as a guide,
a role model & an inspiration to the young
people whose lives will be influenced.
What is Teaching?
 The teacher should watch out on what s/he
is doing while teaching because his/her
approaches, language & attitudes are
potentially capable of modifying a child.
 ‘if you spoil your painting of a child, you can
paint a new one but what if you spoil a child
through your practice of teaching and your
attitudes?’ (Eisner 1979:153).
What is Teaching?
 Research shows that students after many
years speak of their former teachers’
characters & their effects on their lives
(Hayes 1999:14 & Jordan 1930:15).

 Teaching requires careful consideration &

extra precautions because it deals with
young people who will be responsible for the
betterment of the next generation.
What is Teaching?
 Teaching is not just a mere profession but is
more than that when comparing with other
professions.

 Teaching profession is unique in the kind of

service it renders.
Why Is Teaching more than a Profession?
 1 Teaching involves totally different
situations each day due to the fact that it
deals with a group of students who are all
unique & have totally different learning needs
thus present new demands (Kohl 1976:11).

 The teacher’s job is to practice in different

ways possible to satisfy the diverse needs of
individual students that arises day by day.
Why is Teaching more than a Profession?
 The faster & slower learners must somehow
be accommodated in a way that they do not
get bored or disrupt others.

 2 The second major reason is that the

teachers’ conducts can influence the
student’s lives. They are best placed to
facilitate the achievement of IHD
(Physical/Social/Mental/Spiritual)
(National/Philosophical Goal #1)
Basic Qualities of a Professional Teacher
 Prior to teaching one has to have certain
characteristics to qualify him/her to be a
professional teacher.
 Basically, formal training at teacher training
institutions where one acquires;
1) teaching skills, knowledge, methods & ways
of justifying learning,
2) subject content knowledge &
3) developing professional attitudes which is
required by the code of ethics set by TSC.
Basic Qualities…
 A teacher who has content knowledge
without the skills & the ability to teach is of
no more value than one who has skills &
ability but not the content.
 The content knowledge, ability to teach &
professional attitude together forms the basis
of teaching.
 The teacher who is weak in one of these
areas is less than a total professional.
 For effective teaching, one must be
knowledgeable, skilful, committed &
dedicated in his/her profession.
Specific Qualities (various literature sources)
 Platt & Boyce (1930): sympathy, enthusiasm,
fairness & reserve, appearance, intellectual
capacity, initiative & self-reliance,
adaptability, self-control, promptness &
sense of justice….
 Hayes (1999): good role model to students,
cares about the children, creates good
working relationship, acknowledge students’
efforts, provides equal opportunities to all &
avoids discrimination on any basis.
Specific Qualities…
 Farrant (1980) stated that a professional
teacher;
 Creates an educational environment,
 plans teaching programs carefully,
 creates an excellent teacher-pupils’
relationship,
 incorporate pupils’ ideas,
 praises pupils generously,
 exercises good class control & discipline,
 explains ideas to pupils clearly &
 uses appropriate punishment.
Specific Qualities …
To be more precise a professional teacher is;
 -trained & has the appropriate content
knowledge, professional skills & the ability to
teach.
 -conscious of his/her conduct in appearance,
behaviour, attitude & practice.
 -obeying the code of ethics & performs
duties according to duty statements &
expected standard.
Specific Qualities …
 How many teachers possess all these
qualities?
 Not all in equal degrees.
 Some are possessed but not others.
 Of those that are possessed, it is of varying
degrees depending on individuals.

 ‘Characters can be changed, developed,

adjusted and adopted’ (Jordan, 1930:16).
What does Professionalism mean to Teachers and
other Professionals?
 A professional is one who has acquired the
knowledge & skills, developed attitudes &
has the ability to practice the profession.
 Professionalism refers to the professional’s
conduct (approach, attitude, behaviour)
when practicing the profession.
 It is about how knowledgeable, skilful,
committed & dedicated one is in performing
the profession.
Professionalism…
 Teachers are very considerate about
professionalism & take extra precautions
because their practices & conducts
determine the future lives of the children.
 They try to be loyal to the profession & so do
what is right in order to maintain positive
attitude.
 Teachers deal with the basics of good living
& believe in good conduct to serve.
Professionalism…
 There is joy (intrinsic value) in the work of
the teacher because s/he serves the clients
in two ways: teaching as well as caring
despite unattractive conditions.
 Other professionals see professionalism as
the provision of a quality service without
careful consideration of their conduct.
Summary
 Teaching is a process by which knowledge is
imparted by teachers and acquired by
learners who then use, in life.
 In order to undertake teaching profession,
one has to qualify in certain characteristics.
 The basic qualities are content knowledge,
teaching skills and methods and professional
attitude.
Summary…
 When comparing professionalism, to
teachers it means doing what is ethically
right in the provision of the service since how
the service is provided is very influential in
the lives of those who receive it.
 They deal with the basics of good living with
a commitment to serve that would satisfy the
needs of the clients more than the needs of
the provider.
Summary…
 To other professionals, it means providing a
service without much consideration of ethical
rights .
 It deals with a commitment to earn a living
which satisfies the needs of the provider of
the service more than the client.
