D. Table What’s In
Do you have hand tools at home? Can you identify them? Some of these
tools are used in repairing and maintaining electrical and electronics at home.
In this module, you will learn different hand tools , its uses and proper maintenance
and to avoid damage of tools and follow safety procedures in using tools with
appropriate Personal Protective Equipment PPE.
11
What’s New
Mang Juan owns a computer shop and at the same time he repairs
computer, His son Uno always assist his father in troubleshooting a
computer. In order to help his father, he needs to identify properly the tools
needed in a particular task. Let us help identify these tools!

What it is
12
When performing computer upgrades, maintenance or troubleshooting, you will
often need to remove or replace hardware. You should have a number of key
tools in your possession to make this process easy and safe.
The common hardware tools use in CSS is divided into four categories:
HAND TOOLS
13
Flat head screwdriver – used to loosen or
tighten slotted screws.
14
Long-nose plier – used to hold small parts.
15
Tweezers – used to manipulate small parts
16
CLEANING TOOLS
DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS
17
Computers are easier to use and more dependable with each new
generation of hardware and operating system update, but that
doesn't mean they're problem-free. Here's the most popular tools
for diagnosing your computer problems:
Several tools are attracted. When working around electronic devices, take
care that the tools you’re using haven’t been attracted. Attractive fields may
be harmful to data stored on attractive media. Check your tool by pointing
the tool with a screw. If the screw is drawn to the tool, don’t use the tool.
a. Flat head screwdriver. Don’t use a flat head screwdriver to get rid of
a Phillips head screw. Never use a screwdriver as a wrecking bar. If you
can’t remove a component, check to determine if there’s a clip or latch
that’s securing the component in position.
2. Soldering iron and stand. Always use a soldering iron stand after you
aren’t soldering to avoid burns or damage.
3. Crimping tool and wire stripper. When using the crimping tool and wire
stripper, don’t over squeeze the handle of the because the aim of it’s just to
form a bend within the center of the crimp bead and to insulate the wire.
4. Long Nose Pliers and Tweezer. After using the long nose pliers and
tweezer clean it properly with cleaning oil and rugs to avoid them from
becoming dull and rust.
19
5. Multi-tester and LAN tester. Always maintain the functionality and
accuracy of multi tester and LAN tester to ensure the accurateness of
measurement of any things that you just shall measure. 6. Anti-static
wrist strap. Always properly check the device before using it to make sure
that you just are free from danger and to avoid serious damage to the
person engaged in it.
Guidelines for Hand Tools Safely Use the right tool for the job
As tools are designed for specific needs, the first step in safe hand tool is
using the correct tool for the correct job. This is the reason why there are
screwdrivers with various lengths and tip styles and pliers with different head
shapes.
Improper use of a tool is a step in the wrong direction. Inappropriate
use of hand tool causes injury, tool damage and even equipment damage.
Insulated tools are designed to reduce the chance of injury if the tool
should come in contact with an energized source. As we never know when a
situation will arise where insulated tools are required, we need to have some
insulated tools in our collections.
We must frequently inspect insulated tools for any wear or cracking of the
insulation. Keeping tools clean, dry and free from surface contaminants is
important as not to compromise insulating properties. It is best not to use
tools that have been broken by cutting, worn or burned out.
Make note that tools with plastic clipped or slip-on-plastic handles are not
insulated. They are only featured for comfort. Likewise, wrapping a tool with
elastic tape does not promote insulation.
Improper use of tools is not only dangerous but also shows a lack of
20
understanding of tool safety, and disrespect for those around you, thus,
following safety and maintenance practice is a must.
Another safety practice is keeping cutting tools like knives, bolts, cutters, and
pliers sharp, lubricated and in good repair. Cutting wire, bolts and similar
materials must always be made at a 90- degree angle to avoid clipping the
edges of the knives. Pliers must not also be rocked when attempting to cut
materials. This puts tremendous side pressure on cutting surface that can
result to tool failure.
For safer and easier job, investing in high quality tools is advised. If you
are using pliers, take note of the qualities of high-quality pliers. For jobs
requiring extra leverage, use high-leverage pliers. This plier gives more cutting
and gripping power than standard pliers. It is also best in jobs with repetitive
cuts or twisting numerous wire pairs. Pliers with hot riveting at the joint
ensure smooth movement across the full active range of pliers. This reduces
handle wobble for positive cut. For heavy-duty cutting, use side-cutting and
diagonal-cutting pliers.
In using knives, choose sharp cutting knives and tempered handles for
better cutting result.
Further, for other tools not mentioned, you must look for well-designed
tools with a contoured thumb area for a firmer grip or color-coded handles for
easy tool identification.
Using well-designed and high-quality tools save time and give
professional results to you. Most importantly they help you do your job safely.
21
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
This is to shield you from hazard that will happened during working time at
your workplace. Always wear PPE equipment’s like gloves, safety glasses,
protective mask and rubber sole shoes.
Preparing for the task to be undertaken includes proper tool selection.
1. How do you select the best tool for the job? First, know and understand in
detail the scope of work to be accomplished, second, plan for the scope
taking into account the sequence of tasks.
2. Selecting the best tool for each task requires training in the proper use of
the tools, field experience in their safe use, and following the
manufacturer’s guidance and instructions for that specific tool.
3. When obtaining the tool all the associated tooling and consumable parts,
as recommended by the manufacturer, must be included. In addition,
related consumable parts must also be selected and used according to
their manufacturer’s instructions.
Once selected, use the tool for the purpose for which it was designed. Not all
tools come with detailed instructions, but there are those that do spell out
the safety ―Do’s and Don’ts‖ for your safety. If there are set-up/use options,
operator judgment must always be based on what is the safest way to use
the tool.
22
Proper Maintenance of hand tools
To prevent tools from damage, we must properly maintain our tools to stay
them safe and usable condition. Here are the subsequent requirements for
tools and equipment maintenance:

ASSESSMENT 1
26
Analyze the given situation and answer the questions on the answer sheet
provided.
Mang Juan is trying to open a system unit but the side cover is fastened
with a crosshead screw.1. What kind of tool will he use to loosen those screws?
After he opened the side cover he noticed the system unit does not turn on. He
wants to check the AC outlet if there is a voltage. 2. What kind of tool will he
use to check the presence of voltage? After checking the voltage he tried to
remove the power supply unit but it was fastened with a slotted screw. 3. What
will he use to remove the slotted screw? While he is removing one of the screw
he dropped it in a narrow portion which he cannot retrieved it with his bare
hands. 4.What tool will be used to retrieve the screw?
After all the troubleshooting Mang Juan now wants to bundle the cables so
that it looks neat inside and outside.5. To bundle cables neatly, he should use
what tool to improve the aesthetics view inside and outside of the computer?
