A Bird Who Can’t Fly

Ang pipit is a notable Filipino Folk song exhibiting a tragic sad story.
Interpreting the lyrics of the song, it conveys a bird who was hit by a stone from
a sadistic human, as it fell from the tree it expresses how cruel it is for someone to
take an innocent creature's life.

This is one of Levi Celerio's composition and songs. He was born in Tondo
and recognized as a national artist in the field of music. At young age, Celerio
was awarded a scholarship and joined as a member in the Manila Symphony
Orchestra. His other works include "O maliwanag na buwan," "Ako ay may
singsing," "Alibangbang," and many more. For decades, he has been a prolific
composer and songwriter that made him easily translate and write new lyrics to
traditional melodies. According to Guinness Book of World Records, Levi Celerio
is also acknowledged as the only person who can make music out of a leaf.

In our presentation, we compared it to a young student being

discriminated for being open about their gender, specifically; those who have
said to belong in the third gender (LGBTQ). They were getting laughed at and
shamed behind their backs. However, the protagonist disregards all of these
negative comments and kept an optimistic attitude. Unfortunately, everything
went downhill when things became physical and hurtful words turned into
violence. As we dig furthermore about how the lyrics and clips were arranged, it
tells how an innocent bird is unable to fly his own freedom due to the harshness
given a society has thrown at him. The suffering is the one pulling the bird to his
darkness. As portrayed in the clips, enduring the cruelty is too much for a student
like him, and shedding a tear can lift him through.

While making this music video, we’ve experience a lot of errors. We realized
that the artworks made by Levi Celerio and the other national artist are not
easy. It requires a lot of courage and patience to be able to produce a good
piece. Learning the melodies and how we will play it using modern instrument
made it a little difficult for us to do as we are not familiar with it. Overall, making
this music video had a great impact in each every one of us. We learned a lot
of lesson not only academically but also the lesson in life. The theme of our
Music Video made us more aware about the issues happening in the society
and become more sensitive about every individual as we don’t know what they
are going through.

Experiencing rejections and feeling of being captivated in our own lives sets
back dreams and hope to freely live in this society. Continuously spreading toxic
mindset and behavior towards one another wouldn't do us any good, Kindness.
acceptance, and loving our neighbors is what we should embrace, conquer,
and prevail in this world. The music video depicts how discrimination influences
every one of us. Yet, it has given its valuable purpose and a creative twist that
supports anti-bullying and equality that is somehow rampant nowadays. This will
not only remake the composition nor offer entertainment but a platform to open
our minds about the society's unending issue and deepen our understanding
about the song's message to listeners.
