‘Viskar Homestay’, located in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, was designed

with the distinct client brief of “A Homestay that was like no
other”. The design approach commenced with the challenge to
conceptualize and execute a unique abode. It is designed keeping
in mind the simple concept of connectivity with nature.

This 6000 sq. ft. homestay is located on a rectangular plot. The site sits on a contoured
land with the shorter side facing the road. Facing to the east, the location of this site
was such that it could be seen from a distance and at various angles and elevations. So
it had to be carefully designed so that it sits elegantly on the slope.

The home is divided into 3 different levels. Several terrace gardens have been provided
on the various floors to provide green reprieves on every floor. The building outline
evolved with the idea of retaining the existing trees on the site and providing them with
enough space to grow in the future.

The parking and service areas are in the basement, whereas the lower ground floor
houses the dormitory and a bedroom. The common spaces on the lower ground floor
overlook the greenery, slopes, and mountains. The upper ground floor has a separate
entrance stairway and a lift to ensure privacy. It accommodates the private spaces like
the formal living, family lounge, bedrooms, etc. which experience the scenic view of the
surroundings.

The single roofing inclines to the east and south side to maintain warmth throughout the
day and enlighten the interiors as well. Dynamic skylights are introduced to illuminate
the spaces.

Ample open spaces have been incorporated throughout the house in the form of an open
fireplace, outdoor decks, verandah, and courtyards with wooden seating and furniture.
The open fireplace on the lower ground floor is the main highlight of the project. It has
concrete seating and a space for small parties and gatherings. The plastered walls are
largely left white in the common area with the warm accent of wood brought through
in the form of a staircase, flooring, ceilings, screens, and cabinets.

In the private spaces, the décor is kept very subtle with emphasis on the artwork and
color application to certain feature walls. An antique wooden window was sourced from
a local art gallery and redone in bold red color which acts as an eye-catching element
in the partition between formal living and family seating. The tinted glass adds more
detail to the antique masterpiece.
