Description

Is it required to perform flight control surface balancing after painting or structural repair?

Solution

The flight controls surfaces ( example A320FAM) have no “balancing” information recorded at production.
We confirm that there is no requirement to balance the flight control surfaces in case of repairs or exterior paint scheme
modification.
This is valid for Aileron, Elevator or Rudder.

SRM 51-60-00 details that the balancing of control surfaces following repairs or re-painting performed in accordance with
SRM guidelines is not required.

More precisely, the following repair manuals mention that there is no requirement to balance control surfaces following a
SRM repair
.
 SRM 51-60-00 (A300 / A320 / A330 / A340 / A380)
 ASR A350-A-51-6X-XX-01001-667A-A ( A350)

Basically every primary flight control surface has a minimum of 2 Actuators on AIRBUS A/C. One
is driving the system, whilst the other acts as a damper.

If necessary, the damping/driving function can be swapped between the systems. It is due to this
design principle that flight control surface balancing is not required on in service A/C.

For information, A320FAM elevators are subject to a monitored weight campaign due to
potential previous SRM repairs (SB 55-1034). This inspection is not linked to balancing.
