GENERATING PATTERNS
I. Introduction
Hello learners! This Learning Activity Sheet is another tool to help deepen
your understanding and master the mathematical concepts and principles in
generating patterns. Enjoy while learning!
After answering this activity sheet, you must be able to generate patterns
(M10AL-la-1).
Specifically:
1. Generate and Describe Patterns;
2. Find the next few terms of a sequence;
3. List the terms in a sequence given the general term; and
4. Find the general nth term of a sequence.
Before we proceed to our lesson, let us first identify the unfamiliar words that we might
encounter in this activity. Are you ready?
A sequence is a set of numbers written in succession. Each element of the succession is called term. The
first element is called first term, followed by the second term, third term and so on.
3,5,7,9,..
In the given sequence above the first term is 3, the second term is 5, the third term is 7, the fourth term is
9, and the three periods is called the ellipsis which means the sequence continues indefinitely.
+5 +5 +5
A term is obtained by adding 5 to the previous term, therefore, the next three terms are 25,30,35.
Example 3. Solve for the first three terms of the sequence a n=3 n
Solution: Substitute the numbers 1 to 3 for n one after the other.
a n=3 n
a 1=3 ( 1 )=3
a 2=3 ( 2 )=6
a 3=3 ( 3 )=9
Therefore, the first three terms of the sequence are 3,6,9.
Example 4. Solve for the first four terms of the sequence a n=12− 2 n
Solution: Substitute the numbers 1 to 4 for n one after the other.
a n=12− 2 n
a 1=12− 2 ( 1 ) =12− 2=10
a 2=12− 2 ( 2 ) =12− 4=8
a 3=12− 2 ( 3 )=12− 6=6
a 4=12 −2 ( 4 )=12 −8=4
Therefore, the first four terms of the sequence are 10,8,6,4.
Example 5. What is the tenth term of the sequence a n=5 n −3 ?
Solution: Substitute 10 for n.
a n=5 n −3
a 10 =5 (10 ) − 3=50 −3=47
The tenth term of the sequence a n=5 n −3 is 47.
n 1 2 3 4 … n
an 5 7 9 11 … ?
First take the difference between any two consecutive terms:
5, 7, 9, 11, …
2 2 2 -----difference
Since the difference is constant (2), the general term is linear in nature. The linear equation in one variable n
can take the form, an+b=an, where a and b are constants.
Form two equation by using two pairs of numbers from the table.

n 1 2 3 4 … n
an 2 6 10 14 … ?
First take the difference between any two consecutive terms:
2, 6, 10, 14,…
4 4 4 -----difference
Since the difference is constant (4), the general term is linear in nature. The linear equation in one variable n
can take the form, an+b=an, where a and b are constants.
Form two equation by using two pairs of numbers from the table.
Equation 1: Equation 2:
Given: Given:
n=1; an = 2 n=2; an = 6
Substitute the values of a and b in the general linear form an+ b=an.
an+ b=an
4 n −2=an
Therefore, the general term for the sequence is a n=4 n −2.
Congratulations! You’ve almost done with the discussion. Let’s us do some learning activities.
