Watch the film and write a reflection paper, must answer the following:

a. Describe the 19th Century as presented in the film.

Answer:For me: The film “Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon,” set in the Philippines during
the nineteenth century, was an excellent depiction of Filipinos life during the Spanish colony.
People with the power to bend rules, principles, and even the law were shown, and one of the
reasons could be that it is driven by social standing, such as priests, they were considered as
heavily influential because of their connection to the government of Spaniards as well as their
wealth. Several problems were addressed in the film which clearly illustrates what happened
during the colonial rule wherein slavery and misuse of authority were so common that
opposing those potency people was considered suicide. Linguistics has also become one of the
factors responsible for ineffective communication and false facts, because those who work for
the government as interpreters alter the responses of every Filipino by inputting words into
their mouths; the large number of Filipinos have never been heard, never understood, and
never been provided with the opportunity to live freely because of that.

b. What can you say about the film representation of the 19th Century?

Answer: The 19th century Philippines somehow gave birth to the Fillipino Identity It shapes
who the Filipinos are through their struggles and hardships and the realizations and knowledge
of being a Filipino: . Based on my reading, the film depicts the condition in the Philippines
throughout the nineteenth century. Slavery was evident, as well as the abuse of authority.
Being against the govemment is a suicidal act which is why revolutionary parties are so vigilant
about the actions they plan to do. On the other hand, being acquainted with the priest and the
government is advantageous since they may be able to assist you in film has really interpreted
the situation of the Philippinesduring the 19th century. Slavery is very evident as well as abuse
of authority was there. Beingagainst with the government is like a suicidal act that is why,
revolutionary groups are verycareful with every actions that they are planning to do. On the
other hand, being friend with thepriest and the government is an advantage for they could help
you in trouble.
c. What is the main question that the film seeks to answer?

Answer: The key question that the film seeks answers to is, “Who is a Filipino?” a question also
frequently addressed by Kulas, the protagonist of the film. As this movie recreates the lives of
the Filipino’s under the Spanish constitution, which then transitioned to the American
administration, this question serves as our reminder of our identity as a Filipino despite being
ruled by colonizers. My personal take on this question is that, a true Filipino is someone who
does not forget his own identity as one and carries it with him proudly wherever he may be. He
is also someone who knows his rights and duties to the country and does not conform to
foreign norms and culture

d. Give your own reflection and understanding on the film.

My own Reflection and Understanding on the film

For me Based on the movie "Ganito Kami Noon... Paano Kayo Noon?", during 19" century the
language that is mostly used is Spanish and the Tagalog words used in the film are deep that is
hard to understand. Their way of entertainment is done by going to theaters which is a stage
play that shows dramatic performance through singing and dancing. Trades are done overseas
because of this Filipinos have adapted the food, some cultures and costumes of different
countries because of trading. Also during 19th century there are no abundant cars before so
they use kalesa as transportation. The way they court is through harana which the man goes to
the woman's house and do chores like chopping of wood and fetching of water, it's like courting
the whole family before you get the maiden you want for yourself it's their way to see how
persistent you are towards the girl and what you can do for her when she said her "yes". The
film seeks to answer who is the true Filipino. Some say's that they are the true Filipino because
they are the one who serves the country. Some say's that they are Filipino because they are
born in the Philippines. And also some say's they are not Filipino because they have different
language. As well as some people said they are not Filipino because they are born in "Bisaya"
and not Tagalog. Many people on 19 century are confused on who or what they are. I therefore
conclude that the movie "Ganito Kami Noon... Paano Kayo Noon?" tackled important but
sensitive topics on a very creative, comedic and symbolic manner that utilized a humorous
atmosphere to depict these topics included the maltreatment of the Spaniards on the Filipinos.
It also shows the conflict between the rich and the poor, the ignorance or lack of education of
the Filipinos in the provinces during those years. The most important, the movie tackles the
varying definition of the word "Filipino", who are the true Filipino. And also it courageously
represented the harsh realities of the Filipinos during different times of colonization by the
foreign invaders. Specifically, what are things that they have suffered during 19" century.
