Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow.
When you work from bed for a year, it doesn’t just potentially wreck your body. It’s possibly bad
for your productivity and sleep habits, too. “As sleep specialists, we tend to recommend that the
bed should be for the three Ss: sleeping, for sex or for when you’re sick. That’s it,” says Rachel
Salas, associate professor of neurology and sleep expert at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland.
“The more you watch TV in bed, play video games in bed and not sleep in bed, your brain starts
learning, ‘Oh, ok, we can do any one of these activities in bed’. It starts building these associations,
which eventually evolve into conditioned behaviours.” This is what experts call ‘sleep hygiene’ –
essentially, best practice as it relates to being in bed. Putting on your pyjamas at night is good
sleep hygiene because it tells your body it’s time to start shutting down. Doom scrolling or sending
emails in bed is bad sleep hygiene.
So, when you set up shop in bed with your laptop, phone and all the glowing screens your job
requires every day, your brain and body eventually stop associating bed with rest. That’s a big
reason why the pandemic has led to ‘corona-somnia’, says Salas, referring to the global spike in
insomnia and sleep disorders that have accompanied Covid-19.
“You’re really training your brain to be alert, and [telling it] this is where your ideas come and this
is where it’s full work mode” when you work from bed, adds Salas. “When you’re trying to wind
down and go to sleep, your brain is like – ‘wait a minute, what are we doing? This is work time’.”

Some cities have prioritised accessible green space more than others; in Vancouver, 92% of
residents live within a five-minute walk of green spaces. In Milwaukee, in the US state of
Wisconsin, an urban trail was deliberately designed to makes its way through several
neighbourhoods of colour, allowing residents greater access close to home. Cities like these have
nature-minded advocates in local government: for example, the 10-Minute Walk Challenge,
challenges mayors to make parks a 10-minute walk from all homes by 2050. It’s a national
initiative led by organisations like the US’s National Recreation and Park Association, and nearly
300 city mayors have signed on, with San Francisco becoming the first city to hit the challenge’s
goal in 2017.
A similar example is that of New York City’s work with minority communities in Manhattan’s Lower
East Side decades ago to create ‘pocket parks’ tucked into the city blocks that exist to this day.
Even when the city was gripped by crime, drugs and bankruptcy in the 1970s, it helped
neighbourhood residents develop the public community gardens they made out of abandoned
clearings that continue to provide green space for small public art events and other gatherings.
Then there’s the matter of balconies. “I live in affordable housing, and I’m grateful for the
housing,” says Kgama, who lives in New York’s Harlem neighbourhood. “But I was kind of thinking,
‘would it have hurt them to put a balcony here?’” She isn’t alone in that sentiment: from New York
to Toronto, there’s been more demand for balconies built into apartment units. Strict zoning laws
and extra cost are roadblocks, however, as is the fact that bigger balconies can mean less space
inside.

Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow.
If procrastination is an emotional regulation issue, this offers important clues for how to address it
most effectively. An approach based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), seems
especially apt. ACT teaches the benefits of ‘psychological flexibility’ – that is, being able to tolerate
uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, staying in the present moment in spite of them, and
prioritising choices and actions that help you get closer to what you most value in life.
Relevant here is cutting edge research that’s shown students who procrastinate more tend to
score higher on psychological inflexibility. That is, they’re dominated by their psychological
reactions, like frustration and worry, at the expense of their life values. Those who procrastinate
more also score lower on ‘committed action’, which describes how much a person persists with
actions and behaviours in pursuit of their goals.
ACT trains people both, to increase their psychological flexibility and their committed action, and
preliminary research involving students has been promising, with ACT proving more effective than
CBT in one trial over the longer-term. “When someone finally recognises that procrastination isn’t
a time management problem but is instead an emotion regulation problem, then they are ready
to embrace my favourite tip,” says a psychologist. The next time you’re tempted to procrastinate,
“make your focus as simple as ‘What’s the next action I would take on this task if I were to get
started on it now?’”. Doing this will take your mind off your feelings and onto easily achievable
action. “Our research and lived experience show very clearly that once we get started, we’re
typically able to keep going. Getting started is everything.”
