Chapter 1

Background of the study

Procrastination is a behavior of delaying a task that can be done earlier

but chooses to do it last minute. This behavior problem exists in almost every

aspect in your daily lives, be it in academic, financial or even in health

management. Procrastination is an action of delaying of postponing something it

is observe inside of the classroom. Many of Senior High School students hobby

is to procrastinate also known as “Maniana Habit” but few students can do this

kind of habit and they use, it can excuse for their laziness. Students can’t

complete necessary tasks and feel serious stress. Procrastinating in high school

causes anxiety and drops in success, which can lead to long term problems and

causes many problems for high school students. An obvious result of continued

procrastination is a drop in grades and a declined in school success. Students

who do not fully complete assignments and put crucial studying receive poorer

grades. Different factors are to be considered regarding the decrease in the

amount of time in studying of students. Some factors include procrastination,

non-academic after school activities, settling priorities and appalling habits that

might affect the academic performance of students.

Statement of the problem

Why do students procrastinate? Some Senior High School students often

procrastinate because they don’t see how a project is relevant or important to

them; they don’t understand the material, or just don’t know how to get started.

What are the main causes of procrastination? The main cause of procrastination

is a deep-rooted fear of failure. If you fear the consequences of failing, then a

logical extension of this is a disinclination to take action. What are the negative

effects of procrastination? The negative effect of procrastination is you will blow

opportunities. Opportunities are the world’s way of giving you more, do yourself

a favor and grab them with both hands.

Definition of terms

 Academic Procrastination – An irrational tendency to delay in the

beginning and completion of an academic task. Students may have the

intention to perform an academic activity within the desired or expected

time frame, yet failing to motivate themselves to do so.

 Procrastination – To delay doing something that you ought to do, usually

because you do not want to do it. To keep delaying something that must

be done, often because it is unpleasant or boring.

 Procrastinators – Is someone who knows that she or he should do and

do not do it. The procrastinator will work on less important obligation, or

(s)he may use his or her time wastefully in some minor activity or

pleasure.

 Students – One who is enrolled or attends classes at a school, college or

university. In this study, it refers to anyone who is enrolling in physical and

health education students at faculty of education.

Significance of the study

The output of the study can be beneficial to Senior High students of

Umingan Central National High School whose procrastination have been

habitual.
For the staff of the Guidance Office. Findings of this study can serve as an

input for them in the future planning on resolving students academic problem

including academic procrastination with the findings of the study for the students,

they can plan assistance programs for students to help them out with their

problems that cause them to procrastinate without sacrificing their studies and

academic performance, or at least keeping the effects of academic

procrastination at the lowest level.

For the students. The study can enlighten them on the many causes and effects

of academic procrastination of students from which they can learn a lot for these

causes and effects will be based on the actual experiences of students who have

been left with no choice but to give in to academic procrastination.

For administrations and teaching staff. This study can help them better

understand the situations of students. They will come to know the factors that

they can have control of, such teacher factors and student factors that cause

academic procrastination among Senior High School students. Upon knowing

these, the administrators and teaching staff can devise plans and ways to

accommodate the limitations of their student and provide those students having

difficulties in an out of school.

For the future researchers. The outcome of the study is beneficial to the neither

present researchers or the future researchers. This study may be one of the

bases that a new theory in learning will arise.

For the parents. Some of the causes of academic procrastination of Senior High

School students, the family and parents may also find themselves not equipped

to be able to help out of these Senior High School students financially, they can

do a lot better than that by continuously offering their moral support,

understanding and unconditional love.

Scope and limitation of the study

This study is all about procrastination in Umingan Central National High

School to understand the reason why the student procrastinate and to inform

some students for the possible effects to their study and to their performance

inside the campus and to avoid their bad habits such as their attitude and

responsibilities in our school our respondents are the school student at Umingan

Central National High School, with the total number of 70 students. That will be

conducted from November to March 2018-2019 in the form of interview

Chapter 2

Review Related Literature

The behavior of academic procrastination is quite common among

students. Students cannot show their real performance in learning because they

procrastinate and this behavior can decrease student’s performance and they

fail.

According to Milana Knezenic (2016), procrastination is a student’s worst enemy;

it is a disease that eats away the student’s productivity. An American study

estimates that 70% of the students showed the signs of this behavior. “Students

are biologically and socially predisposed to put off until tomorrow what they

should do today”. Aside from the cliché that students are more impulsive, in their

early 20’s they’re still developing their pre-frontal cortex, home of will power.

According to Carla M. Mandap (2016), academic procrastination can be

considered as behavioral, effective and cognitive phenomenon which draws out

from an individual’s fear of failure. The fear of failure is related to low self-

confidence where individuals delay task because of the fear or belief that they

will not accomplish it. Students with high confidence can somehow respond

positively to the academic challenges despite the difficulty of work.

According to Kramer (2015), goals that need to be accomplished must be listed

in detail, in addition to how it can be achieved. Getting rid of distraction is also

another big step in eradicating this behavior, as being troubled can cause anyone

to be stagnant and lose focus. The best things to do when trying to accomplish
something is to start then get the job done, regardless of perfection. Just make

sure that all the essentials are covered. The next step is to then organize all the

tasks that need to be done. Prioritize them and then go through it one at a time.

This will generate a sense of sequence which in turn will create a good,

throughout the working environment. The last step is to fix a deadline. This

encourages discipline and accountability, which will further correct the

“cramming” mentality. Bu using this method, It will be easier to do big tasks, step

by step and chunk by chunk

According to Ludwig (2013), procrastination is not pure laziness. Lazy people do

not want to do anything, on the other hand, procrastinators want to work on the

given task, but they cannot persuade themselves to do so. Procrastination is not

relaxation. When people rest they gain energy, but when they procrastinate, they

lose their energy and get tired. It is vicious circle, because with the little energy

we procrastinate more and spend more energy and we are on the beginning

again.

According to Gracc Shangkuan Koo (2013), a columnist in the inquirer

newspaper, blogged something about procrastination entitled as “ Why do people

procrastinate?” Almost everyone procrastinate and there are some more than

others. She also said that people procrastinate or doing things off when they

overestimated the time they have or underestimated how long it takes to

accomplish a task. Also, people may overestimate their abilities and motivation,

expecting that things will go smoothly without a flaw. She also mentioned that

people uses all sorts of excuses to justify their procrastination. It’s either they do
not to know how to complete or they really don’t know what needs to be done.

Sometimes, they will say that they are not in the mood or they forget. To blame

others or waiting for the right moment or for inspiration is also one of the

excuses. Another thing that Koo expressed in the blog is that people may also

think that they can do better under pressure, waiting until the last minute,

believing that they can finish on time and do other tasks. She mentioned that

there is a research who said that there are active and passive procrastinators.

The active ones are those who work under pressure and finish the task on time

which on the other hand, the passive procrastinators are those who continue to

wait and delay and never get to accomplish their work. Perfectionist could also

be the cause of procrastination. “Unhealthy or neurotic perfectionists” aims to

unrealistic high standard and is afraid to fail. They are paralyzed to even initiate a

work.

Another blog in the internet with a title of “Saka na, Bukas na: Pinoy

procrastination” ask if we, the Filipino’s, ever wondered how the timeless virtue

‘Filipino time’ originated? Do we know why did the grasshopper starved to death

in the story of “The ant and the grasshopper?” Do we also know why the hare

lost the race against the turtle? Based on this blog, it is because of the act of

procrastination. The Filipino way of saying it is “saka na lang” which is clearly the

procrastination we inherited from our conqueror centuries ago. If we will look into

reality, procrastination is a thief of time. Time is the only thing in this world that all

of us can lose and never regain. By procrastinating, an individual is at risk of

wasting and killing the time. Unfortunately, when the individual realizes this fact,
he/she has already run out of time. He/she might to try not to give up by saying

the famous line “baahala na” and hoping that there would be a “later”. The

conflict is that ‘later’ usually ends up with a “never”. (2013)

According to Tulik (2008), procrastination is linked to all kinds of negative effects;

thus people who have potential and talent but procrastination cannot show their

talent or potential because they think it is just hopeless and useless to try out

anything.

According to Dr. Piers Steel (2007), procrastination is one of the self-regulatory

failures that can’t be explained until now; it is also a current and destructive

behavior in this era. So, Steel reviewed the relevant conceptual, theoretical and

empirical works resulting in correlation, experimental and qualitative findings.

Based on 691 correlations, a Meta-analysis of procrastination’s possible causes

and effect shows that neuroticism, rebelliousness and sensations seeking show

only a weak connection. Steel also said that the following are the strong and

consistent signs of procrastination: task evasiveness, task delay, self-efficacy

and impulsiveness, as well as conscientiousness and its pact of self- control,

distractibility, organizations and achievement motivation. “Continued research

into procrastination should not be delayed, especially because its prevalence

appears to be growing “

According to Alexander and Onwuegbuzie (2007), procrastination occurs in all

kinds of daily tasks. Academic progress and success justifying thus this study.

Adolescents spend a lot of their time either at school or involved in school

activities, and the school setting is characterized by “limited times” in which to

perform tasks, investigation work and exam. It is estimated that academic

procrastination in tasks related to academic life is a common phenomenon for

about 70% of university students. In an investigation with adolescents, almost

25% of the individuals interviewed considered that procrastination was a

moderate or severe problem and that tendency to put off tasks interfered

negatively not only with their academic achievement but also with their quality of

life. The most frequent consequence of procrastination is poor individual

performance which interferes with organizational functioning.

According to Klassen (2007), Low levels of self-efficacy are indicative of

procrastination. This means the students who have little faith in their own abilities

tend to procrastinate more and in turn sparks a vicious cycle of poor

performance. Self-efficacy looks at a person’s ability to organize, regulate, and

direct one’s actions to achieve a desired outcome: high levels of self-efficacy

often result in a positive outcome.

According to Ferrari and Diaz-Morales (2007), several studies associate

procrastination with some different personality variables, such as low self-

esteem, low self-confidence, and high perfectionism, competitive immobilize,

dysfunctional impulsivity, depression and anxiety. In general, procrastination can

be considered to interfere with people’s will and their engagement in tasks,

resulting in the increase of stress action, characterized by negative feelings, loss

of control over their personal lives, or consequences for their physical and mental

health. According to literature procrastination is associated with a maladaptive

life style, resulting in serious personal and social effects which reinforce feelings

of lack of personal competence; beside this is it known that the prolonged

exposure to stress can increase the risk of serious illness. Obviously, when it

turns to our students’ lives, procrastination can also cause delay in studying

behaviors, in drafting works or reports, missing deadlines to hand in peers and

putting off administrative tasks related to academic life, such as returning library

books, registering for an exam and so forth. Skipping classes or delaying in

handing in works is also consequences of academic procrastination, as well as

emerging conflicts with parents or friends.

According to Solomon and Rothlum (2006), demonstrate that 49% of students

procrastinate in academic tasks such as writing term papers, studying for an

exam and keeping up with weekly reading assignments. The habit of delaying

tasks result in bad consequence, of which Tulik (2008) describes a few

consequences.

According to Noran (2005), a procrastinator wastes too much time on something

which gives him or her pleasure such as playing computer games or reading and

update in his or her social networking website. Mostly, procrastinators keep

themselves ready to work but end up avoiding the task.

According to Chu and Choi (2005), suggest that there may be different types of

procrastinators and that some types need to suffer from their behavior. In

particular, these types may be actively postpone work, because they perform

better under high pressure and relish the challenge of completing a task in the
last minute. There may be a fine line here, between believing that one performs

better under pressure, and actually doing so. Falsely expecting to do good work

under high pressure, and consequently either missing a deadline for completing

a task of interior quality, can well be described as procrastination under the

definition I suggested earlier. But the type of procrastinator that Chu and Choi

(2005) refer to, correctly predicts that completing tasks late is optimal for him,

and thus he completes tasks late. And again, simply doing something later than

the earliest possible moment to do it cannot immediately be thought of as a result

of procrastination within the framework I intend to use in this thesis.

According to Ryan M. (2004)procrastination is behavior of delaying doing task

that can be done earlier but chooses to do it last minute. This behavior problem

exists in almost every aspect in our daily lives be it in academic, financial even in

health management. ”The habit of procrastination can reach chronic levels that it

can have negative effect on their live”

According to Migram (2003), has done the first historical analysis on the subject

matter and argued that procrastination rises from advance societies who require

various commitment and deadlines.

According to Fischer (1999), procrastination as behavior where most, or all of the

work required to complete a task is done in the eleventh hour. From this

perspective, procrastinators are simply characterized by not distributing their

workload evenly and finishing the majority of it close to a given deadline. This

interpretation does not differentiate between cases where there are good
reasons to postpone a task, and cases where the delay is actually caused by

procrastination, as defined above.

According to Beswick, Rothlum and Mann (1998), “the consequences of habitual

procrastination are likely to be anxiety, despair and depression as the person

fails to complete tasks or perform them unsatisfactority” Procrastination also puts

a procrastinator in a situation of conflict and indecision. Beswick, Rothlum and

Mann suggested that procrastination also results in poor work because it was

done rushed or partly uncompleted.

According to Tice and Baumeister (1997), procrastination in academia may have

particularly serious effects for students in secondary and tertiary education,

whose academic lives are characterized by frequent deadlines. Indeed, it has

been shown that students who rated high on procrastination received low grades.

According to Ringenback (1971), history of procrastination, Parkinson’s law

which dictates that students will take so long to complete a project as the time

that they are offered, and students syndrome, which states that students will only

engage with academic activities at the last possible moment.
