The new academic year is coming, and we are becoming freshmen in the University of Social
Sciences and Humanities family. Because of that, many people feel nervous and others are
excited. Having known about the situation of the freshmen, the faculty of English Linguistics and
Literature has organized a guide course which is called Major Orientation.
Major Orientation is a helpful guide course for freshmen to know more about the school’s history,
foundation, and visions, ... It consists of three sections: A brief introduction of the EF’s study
program, a study plan for freshmen, and a campus tour. Firstly, we listened to a brief introduction
to learn about the school and the EF. Our school is called The University of Social Sciences and
Humanities or USSH for short and is a part of the VNUHCM – Vietnam National University Ho
Chi Minh City, It has two bases located in Thu Duc district and District 1 of Ho Chi Minh city.
The Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature, a small part of USSH whose major is English
Linguistics and Literature is our whole new family, where we will study for four coming years.
The EF vision is a leading learner-centered research faculty building up competent life-long
learners and global citizens. Not only that, but their mission is also to provide professional
competencies and transferable skills for students. Their organizational structures are board of
deans, board of executives, and support staff. The EF core values are called EFAIR which consists
of five different values: E is for excellence, F is for flexibility, A is for Aspiration, I is for
Integrity, and R is for responsibility. We especially learned about our school’s study programs,
including BA and MA ones. Secondly, we learned how to make a study plan for ourselves. The
lecturer helps us to know about our most and least confident skills. We also got to know more
about the necessary soft skills for the university journey like email writing, self-learn,
presentation, teamwork, communication, study planning, creativity, critical thinking, computer,
research, language, problem-solving, and especially time management. My most confident skill is
creativity and the least one is problem-solving. Those skills are very necessary for each student in
university life. For the last content of the second section, we learned how to adapt to the new
environment, how to join the school club and activities, and the rules which we need to avoid.

Finally, in section three, we had a campus tour around the school to know more about the areas,
and buildings of our new home and learned about the support service: ERC, academic advising
staff, and support staff, … The campus tour was very fun and exciting, we explored a lot and got
new pieces of information from the tour guide whose also a student of our school Summarized
from the Major Orientation course, I have learned many necessary things for the coming journey
in the USSH family. From what I have learned in the course, I will prepare soft skills and
information for my four studying years here.
After all, the Major Orientation is a really helpful course for the fresh like us to learn more and
adapt to the new environment easily. We are so thankful and pleased with this awesome
experience from the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature. Hopefully, our journey of four
years at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities will be joyful and successful with
flying colors.
