Procedure:

A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson


Before proceeding to the topic for today, the teacher will ask (2) questions and will elicit answers from the students:
1. What are the Disney movies do you know?
2. Who are your favorite characters in Disney?

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson


The teacher will show (4) pictures of Disney characters unmatched with their quoted lines from their stories.
The learners will match the quoted lines to the characters who said it. The characters and the quoted lines
must be matched correctly. The teacher will ask some students to repeat the lines of the Disney characters as
examples of reported speech. The learners will identify direct speeches and reported speeches.

C. Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson


The learners will differentiate direct speech and reported speech based on the sentence construction. The
teacher will introduce the rules in changing direct speech to reported speech and vice versa.

Rules

1. Quotation Marks and comma are removed in Indirect speech.


2. The conjunction "that" is put between the reporting and reported speeches.
3. The tenses of the verb are changed.
4. The pronouns are changed according to the speaker or to the person being talked about.

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2

The teacher will show a short dialogue and will ask students to read the lines with emotions. Boys will read
Romeo’s lines and girls will read Juliet’s lines.

Romeo: I feel sad when I can’t see you, Juliet. It breaks my heart.
Juliet: Our families are enemies. They fight a lot.
Romeo: I buy roses and your nurse brings them to you. I write and send you letters too.
Juliet: I read and keep them under my pillow.
Romeo: My dad stops me to talk to you.
Juliet: My mom becomes very angry when I speak about you. Mom says I must forget you.
E. Developing mastery

The learners will be grouped into five. Each group will be given a worksheet about direct and indirect
speech. These exercises include: constructing sentences by answering different questions, and applying
the rules in changing direct to indirect speech.

Group 1: The students shall answer questions related to what they feel related to the movie Inside-out.
They have to use direct speech and change it to indirect speech.
Group 2: Rewrite the quotes from the story using reported speech
Group 3: The student shall list the things they like about themselves using direct speech and change it
to direct speech
Group 4: The students shall make a story using the given worksheet. The rules in changing direct to
indirect speech shall be applied.
Group 5: The students shall answer set of questions and they have to apply the rules in changing
direct and indirect speech.

H. Making generalizations and abstraction about the lesson

The learners will define direct and reported speech with their own words. The teacher will ask the rules
in changing direct to indirect speech.

I. Evaluating learning

The class will have a 10-item quiz identifying indirect and reported speeches. They have to change
Direct Speech to Reported Speech or change Reported speech to Direct Speech.

1. The United Nations secretary-general emphasized the importance of camaraderie in times of war.
2. He said, “No man should disrespect his country, including the nation of others.”
3. The government leaders questioned the assembly held at the Congress.
4. The head of the government asks, “Why should we establish relations with countries in Southeast
Asia?”
5. The people respond in unison, “No to war! Yes to peace!”
6. “There were around one hundred attendees inside the plenary,”shared the majority floor leader.
7. “Our world is no different from the world of our neighboring countries,” the student eloquently said in her
speech.
8. The teacher said it was important to know or neighboring countries.
9. The parents agreed with the teacher’s proposal to hold a celebration of traditions of countries in Asia.
10. “We are doing our best to instill in the students the value of acceptance and cooperation to put a stop
to bullying,” the Principal reitariated.

J. Additional activities for application or remediation


Search for a recorded interview of a famous person (living or dead), and make a reported version of it.
It must contain at least 10 sentences
