TELOMERES A telomere is the end of a chromosome. Telomeres are made of

repetitive sequences of non-coding DNA that protect the
chromosome from damage. Each time a cell divides, the telomeres
become shorter. Eventually, the telomeres become so short that the
cell can no longer divide

CANCER
• Cancer is a large group of diseases that can start in almost any organ or tissue of the
body when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably, go beyond their usual boundaries to
invade adjoining parts of the body and/or spread to other organs.
• The cause is a mutation in oncogene(s). A gene which mutation will lead to cancer.
• The substance that induced the mutation is called carcinogen.
• A tumour is the tissue formed from cancerous cell, usually detected when it consisted
up to a billion of cancerous cell
CANCER
• There are two types of tumours:
1. Benign – the cancerous cell do not spread from the place of origin, but not
necessarily slowed down in growth. Example; warts, moles
2. Malignant - the cancerous cell spread to other parts of the body and cause cancer in
other parts. This is what people refers to as “cancer”. Metastatic is the term used for
tumour cells that has broken off from its original location.
