Similarities
● They can both differentiate into different cells for different functions
● They can both regenerate and renew themselves
● They require high amounts of nutrients for growth
Differences
● Embryonic Stem Cells have slightly more ability to differentiate than
adult cells, which like to retain their original cell type
● Embryonic stem cells can only be produced in an embryo
● Embryonic stem cells are slightly easier to grow than somatic cells
Diseases
Most of the time, stem cell
transplants are used to treat
diseases. Severe Aplastic
Anaemia is the fancy name given
to Bone Marrow Failure. To
undergo the treatments, the bone
marrow is removed using
radiation. This would usually be
gamma rays, as they are not
ionising.
Healthy Stem cells from the blood of a donor are filtered out and injected into
your bloodstream, and they slowly go into your bone marrow and start
creating new blood cells for the bone marrow.
