Denmark

Period of Construction: 2012-2013

• The Kalvebod Brygge is located opposite Islands Brygge, a popular summer hangout
in Copenhagen.
• It is possible that Kalvebod Brygge may become Islands Brygge's more urban
counterpart, but it has, until now, been associated with a desolated workplace devoid
of human activity.
• With the opening of this new waterfront, there will be a wider range of public
activities available.
• Located close to Copenhagen's central train station and Tivoli, the popular amusement
park, the 'Kalvebod Waves' will become a hub of activity, allowing the inner city to
regain its connection to the harbour.
• Designed more for functionality than for tradition, this site in the inner city is less
fragile than others and exemplifies Copenhagen's contemporary urban waterfront with
neighboring developments such as the Black Diamond Library and the Nykredit
building.
• It consists of two main plazas that extend across the water and are positioned in
accordance with conditions of sunlight and wind.
• In the south, the pier provides a flexible public space on the water as well as facilities
for hosting events related to the creative industry.
• Kalvebod Brygge was designed as an urban showcase to give organizations,
companies, festivals and fairs a venue along the waterfront over the last ten years.
• This space is complemented by an active water enclave, which provides opportunities
for a variety of water-related activities. There are sufficient facilities in the plaza and
surrounding pontoons to facilitate these activities.
• In addition to creating an active maritime background, boats that commute to and
from the water hub ensure that the plaza is well connected with the rest of the city.

• This second square provides both proximity to and access to the water. The floating
garden is proposed as a recreational space, with a beach, that allows a break from the
hectic pace of urban life. An urban-maritime park.
