MANAGEMENT MODULE – METRO SNMP
Metro SNMP management module for Metro SUB-20 sub-frame. There is a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet interface for connecting
to the management system, a console for connection to a 57600bps asynchronous terminal, 8, N, 1 and an output and input
connector for dry contact alarms. The SNMP management module communicates to all sub-frame modems through a RS485
internal serial channel, allowing independent access to each on-site or remote modem.
It is possible to make the initial configuration through the management interface. The commands are described in the
manual dedicated to the management module. It is also possible to configure and monitor directly on-site and remote modems,
as follows:
• After starting the management module, the prompt “metrosnmp login:>” appears on the screen, requesting a userna-
me to access the command line interface. The standard user is “adm”.
• Once you’re logged in the Metro SNMP command line interface, the prompt “MetroSNMP>” will appear indicating the
board is able to receive commands for its configuration or to access the modems that are inserted in the Metro Sub-20 Sub-
frame.
13
COMPONENTS
• By typing “open local 3”, we can access directly the modem console inserted in the slot 3 of the sub-frame, where
it is possible to type any configuration or monitoring command. After the command, the console’s prompt will change, indica-
ting which equipment it is connected to (in this case, “MetroSNMP:local:3>”).
• For the remote modem connected to the modem in the slot 3 of the sub-frame, the operation is analog, the operation
is analogous to the remote modem connected to the slot 3 of the sub-frame, and ”MetroSNMP:remote:3>” will appear on the
prompt.
• To return to the management board console, you only have to type in “close”, and the prompt will return to “MetroS-
NMP>”.
To configure the working mode, Metro SNMP management module must have a dip-switch that, on normal operation,
must keep all switches ON (opposite direction of the board edge). To operate in a different mode, refer to the management
module manual.
The alarm connector makes available a dry contact output and two dry contact inputs, they can be associated to an
alarm configured in the DMS CS management system. The output and the two inputs correspond to MIB variables that can be
activated or read as the management application finds necessary. The alarm connector pinout is:

NOTE:
The estimated reach for each kind of optical interface is calculated based on the observed attenuation of a
typical link: 0.38 dB/km for operation at the 1310 nm window and 0.25 dB/km for operation at the 1550 nm
window, using the recommended standard fiber. The usage of SP5 interfaces on ITU-T G.652 fibers is possible;
however there is loss of reach due to the dispersion effects on the optical fiber. The same is valid for the
usage of SP3, SAM3 and EM3 interfaces on ITU-T G.653 or G.655 fibers.

TRIBUTAR
TRIBUTARY INTERF
ARY ACES
INTERFACES
The tributary electrical interfaces of the METROBRIDGE modems work at the velocity of 2 Mbps, according to the
G.703 recommendation. Each interface can be configured individually, locally or via management system. The interfaces are
available in connectors located on the front panel and it allows the connection of 75 ohms impedance coaxial cables or 120
ohms impedance twisted pair cables.

Pin 2 RX (out)
Pin 4 TX (in) 1
Pin 5 TX (in) 8
ETHERNET INTERFACE
INTERFACE
The Base T 10/100 ethernet interface can work in two operating modes. In the first mode, the interface traffic is mapped
in multiple 2 Mbps channels, using a proprietary board. That way, the band can be configured from 2 Mbps to 32 Mbps, in 2
Mbps steps. In the second operating mode, the interface data is mapped within a 2048 Mbps structured G.704 board, and its
band can be configured to Nx64 mbps, being N between 1 and 31.
FRAMER G.704
The 64 kbps and 1.984 Mbps velocities in the ETHERNET interface can be obtained from the G.704 framer, which allows
to mount a sub-channel from an E1 timeslot at 2 Mbps containing a structured E1 signal at G. 704.
27
COMPONENTS
The sub-channel composition is developed through the indication of 64 kbps timeslots that belongs to the structured E1
frame. The initial timeslot is indicated through the Gtss[] command, and the number of timeslots to be used from the initial,
through the Gtsn[] command. The sub-channel velocity will result from the used timeslots number (example: 1 timeslot results
in 64 kbps, 2 timeslots in 128 kbps, 3 in 192 kbps and so on).
Through the Genable command, the sub-velocity use is enabled at the Bridge.
You must be aware that there is a certain number of 64Kbps timeslots at the structured E1 board, and they can not be
overlapped in the sub-channels composition.
A structured E1 board on PCM31 and PCM31C mode is composed of the first head timeslot (timeslot 0), being the 1 to
31 timeslots available for sub-channels composition. However, a structured E1 board on PCM31 and PCM31C mode is
composed of the first head timeslot (timeslot 0) and the signalization timeslot 16, being the 1 to 15 and 17 to 31 timeslots
available for sub-channels composition.

CONFIGURATION/OPERA
CONFIGURATION/OPERATION
TION/OPERATION
MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
The equipments are managed by the DMS CS system (Client Server), which is a proprietary management system by
Digitel S.A. Indústria Eletrônica. The communication between the management station (manager) and the equipment (agents)
is developed through a SNMP protocol (Simple Network Management Protocol), RFC 1157.
The DMS system stores equipment information, events and statistics in a database that can be consulted for report
issuance. It can be used in several operational system platforms like, for instance, Windows XP, Windows 98, Windows NT,
Linux, Solaris and HP-UX. It can also be integrated to management platforms like, for example, HP OpenView Network Node
Manager, IBM Tivoli Netview, among others.
The Metrobridge family product management disposes of an automatic identification of equipment resource that compo-
ses the link. Visualization and configuration can be done individually in every equipment, allowing configuration of the agent,
the tributaries and the aggregated in each case.
The system allows the received alarms to be viewed and categorized by severity and the actions to be bound to its
receipt as, for instance, command execution, etc.
The configuration of modems installed on METRO SUB-20 is developed in a centralized way, in the METRO SNMP
itself. The configuration system existing in this module allows the commands to be sent to all local modems and their remote
pairs.
31
CONFIGURATION / OPERATION
In the console prompt there are some informations about the local modem and its connection with the remote modem. For
example: [Loc@MB00.0]#, where:
• “Loc” indicates the typed commands are performed in the local modem;
• “Rem” indicates the typed commands are performed in the remote modem;
• “.0” indicates the optical connection with the remote modem is interrupted;
• “.1” indicates the optical connection with the remote modem is established and the modem takes address “1”
• “.2” indicates the optical connection with the remote modem is established and the modem takes address “2”.
CONFIGURATION COMMANDS
CONFIGURATION
The configuration commands act upon parameters and may change, show, or store their values. There are two kinds of
parameters: Simple and multiple. The simple parameters have only one occurrence in the equipment and it does not need any
additional information. Multiple parameters happen repeatedly, it needs a list of identification for their complete description.
The list of identifiers is always shown by the use of clasps [], it can be made of only one index or an interval with
beginning and end separated by a hyphen, -.
The configuration commands are presented below.

SOFTWARE UPDA
SOFTWARE TE
UPDATE
The software update is developed through the console port existing in the GB300AD back panel, and through an auxiliary
console available at the P3 connector on the module.
Console port in the chassis model Console port in the sub-frame model
DB9 connector pinout P3 connector pinout
ATTENTION!
The product update with another product’s software is hindered through a key word entered in the
update file.
54
The procedure to update software is described below.
Through the get SwVersion command it is possible to view the software version that is being used by the modem.
The Metrobridge line modem software update system is highly secure. For instance, if you have any problem during the
update process, such as blackout or cable disconnection, the modem can restart the update process or continue to work
normally with the prior software version, which is kept.
This update process takes about 15 minutes.
55
CONFIGURATION / OPERATION
SOFTWARE UPDA
SOFTWARE TE VIA MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
UPDATE
An important characteristic of the Digitel Metro family equipment is the actualization. It may be performed through the
DMS CS management system, where all the operation control is centralized and executed by the system administrators. The
system administrators perform the equipment actualization located in the sub-frame and its corresponding remote points.
The latest METRO SNMP management module software version has, inside it, the prior module software version
managed by that.
It is possible to command the update directly from the Digitel DMS CS management system via a graphics interface or
via METRO SNMP module console port commands.
During the update through this process, the data transportation of all boards remains normal, even on the board that is
being updated. When the software update is complete, the modem board restarts and the data traffic is temporarily interrup-
ted. Management, configuration and monitoring of other boards in the network also remain working, except for the board that
is being used. This update process takes about 50 minutes for each board.
For update via DMS CS check the electronic documentation sent along with software.
For update via METRO SNMP module use the “update[slot]” command where “slot” is the slot number where the
modem or converter is inserted in the sub-frame, ranging from 1 to 20. To update remote modems, the slot value ranges from
21 to 40 respectively. It is possible to program an update line, for instance: “update[2;5;7-9]”, modems in slot2, slot5, slot7,
slot8 and slot9 will be updated. For further details about this board operation, refer to METRO SNMP board manual.

APPLICATIONS
APPLICATIONS
Metrobridge line is designed for POP applications, operating from a central (sub-frame/cabinet), from where the optical
fibers are distributed to several users.
Metrobridge is capable of transporting up to 32 Mbps, it comprehends a 10/200 Mbps ethernet interface, an HD26
interface to support up to four E1 GB300 (75 or 120 Ohms) electrical monomodes via patch panel or via cable (see Metro cable
family, page 18), and a monofiber optical aggregated, monomode SC/APC 1310.
The equipment is installed via a GB300i chassis, featuring VDC 36-60 and VAC 93-253 power supply or Metro Sub-20
sub-frame, with optional VDC 36-60 or VAC 93-253 power supply.
SNMP management is done through SNMP Metro module, with optional In-Band management for remote equipment.
Regarding to the installation, Metrobridge line is very versatile; it allows installation of up to 20 modem boards to one
19", 3 UR and reduced depth sub-frame. All connections are in front, ideal characteristic for small-sized cabinets. The use of
connection panels makes possible the assembly of connectors to the front or back of the 19" rack. Besides that, this kind of
panel allows easy access to connectors and it’s isolated from the modem boards, avoiding handling problems by third party.
By using this system, with only sub-frame and connection panels, it is possible to transport up to 80 E1 channels and 20
Ethernet ports to up to 20 clients.
