1 Scope
This Linde Standard (LS) serves as a guide for visual cleanliness inspections at Construction Sites and defines
inspection/verification acceptance criteria for piping construction component surfaces in O2-service.
The LS may be used by inspection personnel for comparing inspected surface conditions, indications and
appearances in correlation with the provided reference samples in this LS.

2 Normative references
This LS contains undated references to incorporate provisions of other publications. The normative references are
cited at the respective place in the text and the publications are listed below. Issues valid at the effective date of
contract shall apply.
LS 141-74 Part 13 Cleanliness of surfaces in air separation plants and components - Process piping and tanks
at construction sites

3 Abbreviations and definitions

carried out

CS Carbon Steel
SS Stainless Steel
BL Bright Light (White Light)

4 General
Complementary to LS 141-74 Part 13 this LS presents photos of a variety of contaminated inner pipe surfaces
which were taken under bright white light and UV light conditions.
The type and concentration of contamination has been applied on 3 different material types each:
 Aluminium pipe 10” (surface as delivered),
 Stainless Steel Pipe 10” (surface as delivered),
 Carbon Steel Pipe 10” (internally grid blasted).
The contaminated surfaces were inspected and evaluated by expert inspection personnel. The actual reference
photos are displayed with reference number in Para.10. Para. 9 summarize the inspection results indicating the
acceptance status and the reference number.

5 Cleanliness requirements
The inner surface of process piping components and tanks shall meet following cleanliness requirements and
related acceptance criteria for visual inspection:
 Organic material such as oil, grease, paint, etc. not ascertainable,
 Cleaning agents including detergents not ascertainable,
 Rust and loose scale, weld spatters, particles dust, fibres or other foreign material > 1 mm not
ascertainable. No accumulation of any particles.
 Moisture, liquids not ascertainable.
Adequate methods for cleaning, inspection and preservation of O2-components at Construction Sites are defined
in LS 141-74 Part 13.

Linde AG, Engineering Division Issue 01/08.2015 LS 141-76 Page 3 of 73

6 Visual Cleanliness Inspection Methods

6.1 Inspection with bright-light (white light)
This method will detect without magnification small particulate material such as dust, oil, grease, moisture etc. It
may be used in conjunction with other methods. A sufficiently bright level of artificial or natural light is essential for
interpretation of surfaces. In general a light intensity of 500 LUX [Lx] will be sufficient for a bright-light inspection.
6.2 Inspection with UV-light (black light)
Many common but not all hydrocarbons or organic oils fluoresce under UV-light (e.g. fluorocarbon oils) and can be
detected by this method, also some vegetable and chemical oils do not fluoresce. As can be seen on the sample
photos the intensity of the fluorescent reflection from various oils differs.
Therefore it is important not to rely solely on the result of the UV-test in evaluating the cleanliness of components
cleaned for oxygen service.
The UV light method might indicate fluorescent areas to be further inspected by other tests such as wipe test. An
UV-light with a wave length between 320 and 370 nm and an UV intensity of 800mW/cm2 shall be used in
darkness or subdue light (near darkness) at a distance of about 10 to 20 cm from the surface being examined.
Note:
The inspection distance may also depend on the recommendation of the Black Light Manufacturer. In case of
doubts, an external test sample shall be prepared as reference.
UV-Light reflections may occur on inspected surface depending on radiation angle of lamp (see Figure 1). Those
reflections shall not be interpreted as fluorescing indication.

Light Reflection

7 Application of this LS
The attached photos which serve as a guide to the inspector may differ in colour intensity, brightness and contrast
depending on the type of printer used. In case of doubts the electronical version provides the most accurate photo
quality.
Note:
The acceptance criteria listed in Para.5 and stipulated in LS 141-74 Part 13 apply obligatory and overruling
independent from visual appearance of contamination shown in attached photo documentation in Para.10
(fluorescent or non-fluorescent).
Any lubricants used at Construction Sites where O2-components are manufactured and/or installed shall be
approved by COMPANY in writing prior to application. This applies for fluorescing and non-fluorescing lubricants.
