10. Your asset tree should look as follows. Note that the tree
defaults to alphabetical order.

Exercise B
Objectives
In this exercise you will practice how to:
x Manually add and configure assets in FactoryTalk AssetCentre
software
Situation
You have finished adding the organization items needed in your
asset tree. You have now been asked to add the assets and files to
the structure you just created.
System information:
Computer Components
SQL Server
FactoryTalk Directory host
FTAC-Server
FactoryTalk AssetCentre server
HMI server
FTAC-Agent FactoryTalk AssetCentre agent
FTAC-Agent2 FactoryTalk AssetCentre agent
FactoryTalk AssetCentre client
FTAC-Client1 All editing software
Microsoft Outlook
Practice
It's your turn to try it:
1. Using the asset tree layout provided in Exercise A and the job
aid, add the file assets to the two documentation folders
(Documentation and InstantFizz Documentation).
x All necessary files are located in C:\Class Files\Student Files.

© 2018 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All rights reserved. Rev. April 2018
COAe9515
Configuring and Organizing the Asset Tree in FactoryTalk AssetCentre Software 4-9

2. Add the ControlLogix asset to the appropriate container:

x Name the controller according to your asset tree layout.
x Do not forget to add the addressing information. The
controller exists on the FTAC-Server image.
x The configuration file is located in C:\Class Files\Student
Files.
3. Add the PanelView Plus asset to the appropriate container:
x Name the terminal according to your asset tree layout.
x The terminal is not reachable on the network; therefore, we
must leave the addressing information blank.
x The configuration file is located in C:\Class Files\Student
Files.
Note: It may seem pointless to add a device that is not
reachable on the network; however, FactoryTalk
AssetCentre software is still capable of managing version
control for the configuration file. So although we cannot
upload or download, we can still track changes made to the
configuration file.
4. Add the HMI server to the asset tree by using a Remote
Computer asset.
A. What is the UNC path for the remote computer's shared
folder? Hint: The HMI server is located on FTAC-Server in
the HMIServerBackup folder.

B. What type of asset do you need to place under the remote

computer to hold the HMI server configuration files?

C. Add the appropriate addressing information and

configuration files. The HMI configuration files are located in
C:\Class Files\Student Files.
5. Turn to the answers section and verify your final asset tree
configuration is correct.

Exercise B
Objectives
In this exercise you will practice how to:
x Archive files in FactoryTalk AssetCentre software
Situation
You have noticed that many of your employees have been
forgetting to check Microsoft Excel files and Studio 5000 Logix
Designer files back into the FactoryTalk AssetCentre archive. You
must set up auto check in for each of these file types.
You have also noticed that you check out the
InstantFizz_Slot3_2018.ACD file daily, so you would like to create
a shortcut to the file on your desktop.
System information:

It's your turn to try it:
1. Your images should already be running. Open the AssetCentre
client software if it is not already open.
2. By default, FactoryTalk AssetCentre software already has system
file associations for Rockwell Automation and Siemens
programming software. Edit these file associations so that they
will automatically check in:
A. Using the job aid, open the File Associations category from
the Options window.
B. Edit the system association for .ACD files to automatically
check in the file after editing.

any quick change you'd like (such as the preset value of a timer),
then save your changes and close the file. What happens?

4. Check the file in and delete the local copy.

5. Add a new system file association for the Excel file.
A. You will need to know the location of the program's
executable file. The location has been provided for you in
the table below.
File Extension Location of Program Executable File
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft

Office\Office14\EXCEL.EXE

B. Be sure to set up the file for auto check in.

6. From the Asset Tree, open the Instant_Fizz_Recipes.XLSX file,
choose Check Out, and verify that the file opens in Microsoft
Excel software.
7. Close the Excel file and choose to check in and delete the local
copy.
Note: Since the file did not change, you will see the check in
action in your archive history but the version of the file will not
change.
8. Since you open the .ACD file daily, use the job aid to create a
shortcut to that file. Do NOT open the shortcut file yet.
HINT: There is no indication within the client that the shortcut
was successfully created. Instead, you will need to look on your
desktop to see if the shortcut is there (it will have an .ALUP
extension). Feel free to move the shortcut wherever you'd like.
9. Close the AssetCentre client.

4. You need to work on the routine you just imported. What

should you do within the AssetCentre Client software so that
users know to use another (read-only) version of the file?

5. Perform the action you specified in your answer to Step 4. Use

any version of the file you'd like, except the most recent version.
Be sure to include a comment for your action.
6. What action should a user do to open and view a pinned
version?
Hint: There are multiple ways to do this. However, only one
option will allow you to automatically open and view the file.

7. Perform the action you specified in your answer to Step 6. Look

through the controller program. Did you get the correct version?

8. Close the file.

9. Now try opening and checking out the

11. What should you do next in the AssetCentre Client software so
that other users get the most recent version of the code?

12. Perform the action you specified in Step 11.

13. It turns out that the logic your colleague developed is faulty.
You need to revert back to the previous version of the file, and
get it in the controller. How should you go about doing this?

14. CHECKPOINT. Turn to the Answers section and verify that your
answer to Step 13 is correct before moving on to the next step.
15. Perform the actions you specified in Step 13.
16. Leave the images running.

5. To pin the current working version, select the version and click
Pin Version:

6. To obtain the pinned version of the file, a user should either:

x Right-click the file in the tree and select Open>Get
x Click Get in any of the toolbars
x Select the pinned version in the archive and click Get
Version.
Tip: The first option is the most efficient way to open and view
the file. Using either of the other options will not get the file to
automatically open. You must browse to the appropriate folder
on your computer and open the file from there.
7. Yes, you should get the pinned version. You know it is the
pinned version because it will not have the RapidMix2 routine.
9. When you open and check out the
InstantFizz_Slot3_2018.ACD file, you should get the most
recent version. You will know it is the most recent version
because it will have the RapidMix2 routine.
11. After completing edits, you should unpin the version that is
currently pinned. It is possible but unnecessary to pin the latest
version of the code.
13. In order to download the file to the controller, you must first be
able to open and check out the file. This means you must
promote the desired version (the version immediately
preceding when the RapidMix2 routine was added).
After promoting the desired version, you must open and check
out the file. From here, you can download the file. Remember to
check in the file with a comment.

7-6 Configuring Disaster Recovery and an Inventory Agent in FactoryTalk AssetCentre Software

IMPORTANT
If you are shutting down images, be sure to shut down the
images, not your actual computer.

Answers: Exercise A
Check your work:
2. Your agent group assignments should appear similar to the
following:

3.
A. You should assign the new agent group to the Building 1
generic container.
Since child assets are automatically set to inherit the agent
group assigned to their parent, you should assign the agent
group at the highest level possible. This way you do not have
to change the agent group for each individual asset.
C. The properties of your Building 1 generic container should be
similar to the following:

4. The following assets are compatible with Disaster Recovery:

x TAM_B1_IF_HMI
x TAM_B1_IFL1_L60
x TAM_B1_IFL1_PVP1500

© 2018 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All rights reserved. Rev. April 2018
DRIe9515
Configuring Disaster Recovery and an Inventory Agent in FactoryTalk AssetCentre Software 7-7

5. All of the assets should use the Disaster Recovery - Backup and
Compare operation, since plant personnel want to be notified of
changes:

Asset Name Disaster Recovery Operation

TAM_B1_IF_HMI Disaster Recovery - Backup and
Compare
TAM_B1_IFL1_L60 Disaster Recovery - Backup and
Compare
TAM_B1_IFL1_PVP7 Disaster Recovery - Backup and
Compare
6. Remember: you must perform Disaster Recovery before a SQL
backup, and you must leave an hour cushion before the SQL
backup. Therefore:
x 12:00 AM - 4:00 AM: You can only perform Disaster
Recovery between 12:00 AM and 2:00 AM (to leave an hour
cushion before the SQL backup).
x 4:00 AM - 12:00 PM: You should not perform Disaster
Recovery at times the network is highly active.
x 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM: You can perform Disaster Recovery
during the full two hours.
x 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM: You should not perform Disaster
Recovery at times the network is highly active.
x 6:00 PM - 12:00 AM: You should not schedule Disaster
Recovery - Backup and Compare operations during times of
moderate to high network activity.
7. If it takes one agent 12 hours to backup 100 assets, a single
agent can back up about 8 assets an hour:

Time Network SQL Event # of Assets

Activity
12:00 AM - 4:00 AM Low Full database 16
backup at 3:00AM
4:00 AM - 12:00 PM High None 0
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM Low None 16
2:00 PM - 6:00 PM High None 0
6:00 PM - 12:00 AM Moderate Differential backup 0
at 9:00 PM
Note that during both the timeslots of 12:00 AM – 4:00 AM and
12:00 PM – 2:00 PM only two hours are available to perform
Disaster Recovery.

DRIe9515
7-8 Configuring Disaster Recovery and an Inventory Agent in FactoryTalk AssetCentre Software

9. You should perform the Disaster Recovery between 12:00 AM

and 2:00 AM. This means you will have to start the Disaster
Recovery schedule at 12:00 AM.

You could also perform the Disaster Recovery at 12:00 PM. Since
it is a best practice to perform Disaster Recovery before a SQL
backup, you should eliminate the 12:00 PM option.
10.
A. You should configure Disaster Recovery at the Building 1
level. Since you only have three devices to perform Disaster
Recovery on, all assets can be included in one schedule. By
choosing to configure at the Building 1 level, you can create
one schedule that includes all of your assets.
C. Completion emails should be sent to Vanessa Moore
(Engineer1@FTAC.com).

following:

12.
A. Based on the situation section, Vanessa Moore
(Engineer1@FTAC.com) and John Williams
(Administrator1@FTAC.com) should both be notified if
differences are detected.
Note: John Williams will need to be added to the FactoryTalk

C. The properties of both your HMI (TAM_B1_IF_HMI) and

controller (TAM_B1_IFL1_CLX) should appear similar to the

following:
Note: Since you already configured the Disaster Recovery
schedule to email Vanessa upon completion, you do not
need to configure an Event Completed notification in the
individual assets.
15. The Disaster Recovery operation should have taken
approximately 1 to 5 minutes.

Exercise B
Objectives
In this exercise you will practice how to:
x Automatically add and configure assets in FactoryTalk
AssetCentre software
Situation
Additional assets have been added to your system and you need to
add them into your FactoryTalk AssetCentre system.
System information:
Computer Components
SQL Server
FactoryTalk Directory host

Practice
It's your turn to try it:
1. If it is not already, open the AssetCentre Client software.
2. Create a new generic container asset at the same level as
Building 1 and Documentation:
x Name: Inventory Agent
x Agent Group: System Default
This container will hold your inventory assets. Your asset tree
should appear similar to the following graphic:

3. Within the Inventory Agent container, create a new Asset

Inventory asset that will scan the network for computers
(Windows operating systems):
A. What type of scan should you use?

B. All of the devices/computers on your network are on the

same subnet. Configure the scan to use an IP subnet with
the IP address of one of the four computers in your system
(FTAC-Server, FTAC-Client1, FTAC-Agent, or FTAC-Agent2)
and the subnet mask 255.255.255.0.
Note: You should not need a login or password.
4. Within the Inventory Agent container, create an additional Asset
Inventory asset that will scan the network for devices that are
discoverable by RSLinx® Classic software:
A. What type of scan should you use?

DRIe9515
7-14 Configuring Disaster Recovery and an Inventory Agent in FactoryTalk AssetCentre Software

B. You do not know the maximum depth that your assets are
located at, so you should configure the scan to have an
unlimited depth.
5. Create a new schedule that will allow your newly created
inventory agents to run:
A. At what level should you create the schedule?

B. What type of operation should be performed?

C. CHECKPOINT. Turn to the Answers section and verify your

answers to Steps 5A and 5B are correct.
D. Configure the schedule. Since assets are rarely added to
your system, this schedule will only need to be run weekly.
The system has the bandwidth to run the schedule any day
of the week between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.
6. Run the schedule. It may take sever minutes to complete the
schedule.
7. The schedule should complete successfully. Once the schedule
is complete, each asset inventory in the asset tree should have a
.RAAI file beneath it.
8. Examine the .RAAI file for the inventory agent configured to
scan for computers. How many computers were found?

9. Close the open .RAAI file and open the .RAAI for the inventory
agent configured to scan for RSLinx Classic discoverable devices.
10. Expand the devices so that all devices found are visible. DO NOT
sort the devices by any of the heading columns. The devices
within a chassis will automatically appear in order of slot
number.

11. Using the job aid, add the SoftLogix™ controller (1789-L60)
controller in Slot 2 to your asset tree. This controller is used to
control a second line in Building 1:
x Asset Name: TAM_B1_IFL2_CLX
x Asset Location: AssetCentre/Tampa Plant/Building
1/InstantFizz Line 2
Hint: You will have to create a new container for InstantFizz
Line 2.

IMPORTANT
When adding the controller using the Asset Inventory Add Asset
Wizard, be sure to verify that you are adding the controller in
Slot 2. If you are not adding the correct controller, cancel the
operation, return to the asset inventory results (.RAAI file) and
select the correct controller.

12. Close the .RAAI file and verify that the new controller was
successfully added to the asset tree.
Note: In an actual production environment, you would
additionally want to add configuration data for the controller
and verify that it is included in a disaster recovery schedule.
However, for the purposes of this lab, we will leave the
controller without any configuration data.

B. Try to add an object to the InstantFizz application. What

happens?

C. Try to add an object to the Juice application. What happens?

Answers: Exercise A
Check your work:
2.
A. FactoryTalk AssetCentre software uses the Network
Directory.
B. You do not need to add any computers, as they all already
exist in the FactoryTalk Directory.
C. You only need to add the FTAC-Server\CJames
Windows-linked user.
D. You will need to add the JSmith and MAdams FactoryTalk
users.
E. You will need to add the InstantFizz Operators and InstantFizz
Engineers groups.
3.
A. You should not have needed to configure permissions for
individual users. Notice the time you saved by setting
permissions for just 3 groups, as opposed to the time it
would have taken to set permissions for 6 individual users.
B. For the InstantFizz Operators group, you should have:
- Set the List Children and Read permissions at the
Network level.
- Set the remaining permissions at the InstantFizz
application level (InstantFizz will inherit the List Children
and Read permissions from the Network).
C. For the InstantFizz Engineers group, you should have:
- Set the List Children and Read permissions at the
Network level.
- Set the Write and Execute permissions at the InstantFizz
application level (InstantFizz will inherit the List Children
and Read permissions from the Network).
D. For the Administrators group, you should have set the
permission at the Network level so that the InstantFizz and
Juice applications inherit the permissions.

5.
A. When you try to configure security, you should not even be
able to see the Security… option when you right-click an
object.
B. When you try to add an object, you will be able to see the
option when you right-click. However, when you complete
the dialog box and click OK, you will get an “insufficient
security rights” message.
Note: If any of your tests failed, verify that you removed all
the permissions for the All Users group at the Network level.
6.
A. When you try to configure security, you should not even be
able to see the Security… option when you right-click an

B. You should be able to create the object without any issues.
C. When you try to add an object, you will be able to see the
option when you right-click. However, when you go
complete the dialog box and click OK, you will get an
“insufficient security rights” message.

This is because the Juice application inherited the List

Practice
It's your turn to try it:
1. Verify that your FTAC-Server and FTAC-Client1 images are on
their 2018 Troubleshooting snapshot.
2. Try to open the AssetCentre Client software. What happens?

3. Perform the preliminary checks on your FactoryTalk system.

A. Are there any issues with the FactoryTalk Directory? You
should be able to see Samples Water and InstantFizz
applications.

B. If there were any issues with the FactoryTalk Directory,

restore the FactoryTalk Directory. There is no passphrase for
the backup files.
C. Are there any issues with the FactoryTalk HMI server? You
should be able to open the InstantFizz client on
FTAC-Client1 without error.

D. If there were any issues with the HMI server, restore the
server. Recall that the HMI backups are stored in two
different locations.
E. Are there any issues with the AssetCentre database?

14-4 Troubleshooting a System Using FactoryTalk AssetCentre Software

F. If there were any issues with the AssetCentre database,

restore the database.
G. Are there any issues with the RSLinx Classic configurations?
There should be one Ethernet driver in the RSWho window
on the FTAC-Client1.

H. If there were any issues with the RSLinx Classic

configurations, restore them. Remember to browse the
entire configuration after restoring it.
I. Are there any issues with the required services?

J. If necessary, start the required services.

4. Can you open the AssetCentre Client software without error,
and see all of your assets?

5. What caused the problem, and what time did it occur?

C. What will you do to prevent the problem in the future?

11. Close any open software on the images. Shut all of the images
down.

IMPORTANT
Be sure to shut down the images, not your actual computer.

Answers: Exercise A
Check your work:
2. When you try to open the AssetCentre Client software, you get
an error that no connection could be made. This could have
numerous root causes.
3.
A. Yes, the issue is that all of the information that was stored in
the FactoryTalk Directory is now missing.
C. Yes, the issue is that the HMI server status is “Not Loaded,”
meaning there is no HMI server.
E. No, there are no issues. The AssetCentre database appears to
be intact. This should be verified from the SQL Server
Management Studio software.
G. Yes, the issue is that there are no RSLinx Classic drivers.
I. Yes, the issue is that the FactoryTalk AssetCentre Server
service is not started.
4. Yes, you should be able to open the AssetCentre Client software
without issue. However, all of your assets are now gone.
5. If you go through the logs, you will see that the user MAdams
(Mary Adams) went through and deleted all of your assets at
approximately 11:51am on 11/16/2017. Although it is possible
she did that by accident, it is more likely that she intentionally
corrupted your entire system (since the FactoryTalk Directory
contents, HMI server, FactoryTalk AssetCentre and RSLinx Classic
had all been wiped out as well).
6. Recall that the entire FactoryTalk AssetCentre configuration is
stored in the SQL database. As long as you have full SQL
backups, all you need to do is restore the latest SQL backup. You
must make sure you restore a backup that occurred before Mary
deleted all the assets.

Rev. April 2018 © 2018 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All rights reserved.
TBLe9515
14-8 Troubleshooting a System Using FactoryTalk AssetCentre Software

8. This is an issue that could very easily be prevented by tightening

the security within both the FactoryTalk Administration Console
and FactoryTalk AssetCentre software, by denying the user the
'Delete Children' permission.
If Mary corrupted all of these things by accident - the
FactoryTalk Directory, HMI server, FactoryTalk AssetCentre and
RSLinx Classic configurations - then she needs more training on
how to properly use those items.
If Mary intentionally corrupted them, you would need to watch
more closely for disgruntled employees. You are very lucky that
she did not delete the FactoryTalk AssetCentre backup files; had
she done that, there would have been no way to recover. This is
why you need to keep your backup files secured.
9. Problem presentation: Could not open the FactoryTalk
AssetCentre client.
A. There were multiple root causes of the problem. The
FactoryTalk Directory applications and HMI server had been
deleted. Although not a root cause, the RSLinx Classic
configurations had also been deleted, which would cause
problems for Disaster Recovery operations later on.
B. The repairs were as follows: (1) restore the FactoryTalk
Directory, (2) restore the HMI server and (3) restore the
RSLinx Classic configurations.
Once you were able to open the FactoryTalk AssetCentre
client, you identified a second problem: all of the assets in
FactoryTalk AssetCentre were missing.
C. To prevent this problem in the future, you would need to
tighten security within the FactoryTalk Administration
Console. The key permission to restrict is “Delete Children”.
10. Problem presentation: All assets missing from the asset tree.
A. The root cause of the problem was that a user, MAdams,
deleted all of the assets.
B. The repair was to restore the most recent SQL database
backup created before the assets were deleted.
C. To prevent this problem in the future, you would need to
tighten security within FactoryTalk AssetCentre itself. The key
permission to restrict is “Delete Children”.
